In case you haven't been following the discussions, we're meeting at the Phoenix Bar (110 Charing Cross Rd) from 6 to 7:30, then on to Wagamama's Soho (10a Lexington Street.) More info on the wiki.

Balls. Looks like I'm not going to be able to come after all. Blame the vagaries of Terminal Server Universal Printers.

Due to Virgin's extortionate fares for Friday travel, £170 for two standard return tickets, I'm not coming to London until tomorrow, so won't be able to make it tonight.

Sorry guys.

Have a good time guys!

(/me toasts UK Mefiers from his unlimited food and alcohol college ball in Oxford, which is the reason why he couldn't come tonight)

Shame none of you guys can come (adrian I'm jealous) -- hopefully it won't be just me on my own!

I s'pose I should get dressed & get moving soon...
posted by i_cola at 5:21 AM on June 25, 2004

i_cola: you took the words outta me mouth! I sit here in me dressing gown, with my A-Z in one hand and my coolpix in the other...

I am travelling to Forest Row, E.Sussex 1st, and then back up from E. Grinstead to Euston. What's the Tube route from there, either to Wagamamma's or to The Phoenix?
posted by dash_slot- at 5:33 AM on June 25, 2004

It'll be the only MeFi meet-up where no-one dares mention our Portuguese compadre, for fear of getting lynched by football fans.
posted by rory at 6:11 AM on June 25, 2004

From Euston, Northern line (charing cross branch) to Tottenham Court road, then straight down charing cross road to the phoenix (at phoenix road).
posted by biffa at 6:15 AM on June 25, 2004

dash: Hang on, you're going from East Grinstead to Euston? East Grinstead trains go to London Bridge so why not get off there & go to Tottenham Court Rd on the tube? [Jubilee to Waterloo & Northern to TCR]

Otherwise what biffa said...

Wait wait wait... don't you have to go through Mornington Crescent?

*wishes he could be there*

I'm in the area tonight. If I can get past my fears (you guys are scary) I'll try to drop in.
posted by nthdegx at 9:16 AM on June 25, 2004

Euston, we have a problem:

I lost my wallet, and a friend who discovered it in her car is bringing it round to me, asap.

I still ain't left Oxford, and will now have to navigate the M25 at peak time. Lord knows at what time I'll drop the dotter off in Forest Row, ack,the whole evening looks unlikely now.

All of a sudden I wish I had a more pronouncable username. Actually, you'll know its me cos I'll be the drunk guy that comes in at about 9pm and shouts "pancakes for everybody!".

I expect some damned flattering photos from the best-dressed city in the world. Ye need not be pretty, but ye need be posh!

As a Londoner I'm gutted that I couldn't make it as I've got a sick family member to take care of - next time perhaps...

Bring on the photos!
posted by dmt at 4:51 AM on June 26, 2004

Arghh, I missed out. Forgot there was a leaving bash for a work colleague. By the time I got to the phoenix it was after midnight and I was very, very drunk.

Hope fun was had by all and I'll try and actually look at my diary next time.

I hope there was drunken police action again. Bring on the photos.

Wish I could have made it, but I was waylaid by some unfortunate gastric occurrences and could not leave my house.

Is it just me, or does the UK contingent seem like a bunch of whingers?
posted by Ufez Jones at 9:30 AM on June 26, 2004

I have to agree. Did anybody at all make it to the damn meeting?
posted by languagehat at 10:02 AM on June 26, 2004

It was fun; We missed all of you who couldn't make it, but had fun anway. There are photos, someone will post them soon I trust. Also, just to keep things clear: That wasn't me in that photo ,they edited my face into it later. Really.

And where were you in NYC last month Mr Hat?!?

Saturday has been a bit busy but the pix (few but good) will be up by the time the septics are out of bed tomorrow...

Who cares? I'd rather watch the proper little sweeties embroider their declinations. And judging from the travel directions entangled in this thread, we can probably feel fortunate that a reasonably small rock surrounded by an unmistakable sea seems to have kept them all from becoming hopelessly lost.

Great, now I'm picturing languagehat as a handpuppet. On the end of who's hand I don't know.

Heh. The meet was fun. There was myself, fvw, cbrody and i_cola. The rest of you suck. Although, I was the only one who didn't finish my Wagamama's. Which I regret now, typing on a filthy, filthy keyboard in the internet cafe at the back of Chopstix in Camden. I'm hungry.

And I guess I'm having my own little MeFi meetup here, with my reflection in this dirt smeared Dell screen. Eww.
posted by armoured-ant at 11:51 AM on June 26, 2004

Well, I got to my mates at 9.15, which made the whole evening unpossible, sadly :(

I'm so miffed I didn't make it...if the last (first) UK MefiMeetup was any yardstick, we UK'ers know how to partay! (even if diluted by a token dutchboy...)

Here's looking forward to the next one. Soon come, eh?
posted by dash_slot- at 1:27 PM on June 26, 2004

What a pathetic bunch of losers you all are. Apart from armoured-ant, fvw and i_cola, that is. BTW i_cola, where are the pix??

Let's do another one soon. No need to wait til 2005!

[rub-rub-rub]

Aw... you know that feels good, languagehat!

PHO-TOS!
PHO-TOS!
PHO-TOS!
PHO-TOS!

I don't know how y'all do this across the pond, but we Americans tend to just yell until we get what we want. It's really just mob mentality, but we've managed to cast this annoying yelling, culturally, as a passionate manifestation of populist solidarity, even if all we're yelling for is a glance at your tits. It's an all-purpose group talent, so let's not debate the particulars. Give us what we want, or we'll pull the pond's drain-plug, pave a highway ober there, and commence dotting your countryside with big-box stores.

"Ober"? You're beginning to sound more continental already, scarabic!

Also, PHO-TOS! PHO-TOS! PHO-TOS! PHO-TOS!

So, in a toilet cubicle at work I find myself practising the most ridiculous and amusing pronunciation of my username. I settle for unth-deggux (you weren't too far off amberglow). At this point someone enters the room, and must have over heard my defiant satisfied final attempt: UNTHDEGGUX!

Realising that he must have heard (I assume it was a he, since I was in the gents) I then reason he must have assumed the noise was the result of a severe case of constipation. I then fail to suppress my amusement at this and let out a mumbled PFAH! Dear me: two ridiculous noises in quick succession. I had no alternative but to salvage some sort of dignity with a manly throat-clearance. Except that my voice cracks under the tension and I sound more like Michal Jackson:

UNTHDEGGUX - PFAH! - Aheiii! He might reasonably have assumed that three people were in my cubicle. I wait for him to leave before I exit the cubicle and console myself in the knowledge that at least I have a good icebreaker for later.

My lame excuse for not attending is a combination of prior engagements, debauched birthday celebrations and not realising Wagamama's was a restaurant until birthday-boy told me otherwise. A large degree of incompatability led me to conclude non-attendance was of benefit to all.

Next time, it will all be different.

Next time it will be on a Saturday ;-)

Right, some photos and a small instructional video.

Biggest shoutout ever?

Thanx for da pix, i_cola:

BTW, That pic outside Little Amsterdam - is that yer dad looking both ways as he's leaving, to make sure no-one spots him collecting his weekly parcel of Thai LadyBoy rarities?

Go to a meetup, ya bastard!

I am well satisfied to have a shoutout from my pommie bastard friends, and if you aforementioned bastard's'll take up a collection for me to show up at a meetup somewhere (including the obligatory per diem cocaine and hooker requirements that are always on my rider), well, golly, I'll be there!

Guys, 'tis an honor to be an afterthought on the great placemat shoutout of life.

(And I didn't realize I was eating prawns wrong all this time. That unstoppable prawning techniqe'll save a load on dry-cleaning. Thanks!)

Fun and informative. Still, I hadn't figured on you all being so... low key. Or am I wrong?
