How do you picture the bona-fide MeFi celebrities? July 1, 2004 9:23 PM   Subscribe

How do you picture the bona-fide MeFi celebrities? We read from them all the time, but they don't often give clues as to their real selves. If you don't make a meetup, you'll still need a picture of them in your head. So what do you think they're like? I'll leave the choice of celebrity up to you

Me, I see Miguel as an early-30s suave debonair chap, who drinks brandy and has a moustache. Probably wears a white dinner jacket at times, with the bow tie hanging un done.

Quonsar confuses me. Is he an older, wiser 40-something who wears a silver watch and is loved by the ladies for his wildean charms, or is he a 20-something who never cracks wise in real life?

Mathowie I've seen pics of, so doesn't count.

Keyser Soze wears T-shirts

t r a c y wears eyeliner, in my mind's eye.

I've almost met Wulfgar! (and have seen pix), and he's not nearly as frightening in appearance as you might think. Ferocious, in a determined sort of way, but not frightening. Well, maybe to small children.

Kidding, Wulfgar, kidding!

In case you think I'm a celebrity -- in which case multitudes of others might wish to pack it in as well, I'd imagine -- here's what I look like. No, really. Gets damn hot in here.

If you haven't seen pics of q or MC Miggy Migs, then you haven't been around here long enough, and need to go archive digging for the good stuff. Hell, they're two of the few MeFites I'd recognize on the street.

*cough cough splutter phlegm sputum and brandy burps*

I say! In my time, back when Matt was a simple caveman trying to make a wheel that was satisfyingly round and Dubya was permanently drunk, both nostrils devastated by the ravages of hoovering cocaine, if I posted a MeTa thread about what we all think we look like, why, I'd have been drawn and quartered in no time.

For the record, even if I do say so myself, I am a fine figure of a man, admired by all lucky enough to catch a glimpse of me. My demeanour is upstanding but accessible; my gestures are charming and piquant; my movement is as graceful and menacing as that of the snow leopard pouncing playfully on the bright orange carrot of a Santa's nose.

Women - it has been proved in university studies - find themselves unable to resist me, such is the magnetic pull. Men themselves are reduced to spiteful tears and much ripping of the Lacoste shirts. That I'm not gay was considered in 2000, by Portugal's main newspaper, as the "greatest national tragedy ever".

Even children rush up to me and say, in those delightful voices of theirs "Pray, dear Miguel, touch our fevered brows so that we may feel blessed and, while you're at it, give us tons of Lego."

An old witch from Alberta once reminded me that my name meant God-like. Little did I know how right she was! ;)

Speak for yourself, Chef. I'm not married. (This is not an advertisement.)

And the guy I've hired to pose as me at these NY meetups? Well, his contract is up at the end of the summer, so I might look a little different in photos taken after the end of August. Stuntcasting is an imperfect science.

Stav, I always pictured you as a cross between Owen Wilson and Doug Mackenzie. And after this thread I've been picturing that photo of Miguel as one of nine hydra-heads on a great posting beast.

Funny about NortonDC and the camera thought. I always had him as having a spy camera in his hat, a derby, a little too small for his head, but not cartoonishly so. (and Wolfdaddy, I don't have the smello card on my laptop, so I can't speak to that. But you look nothing whatsoever like Mel Gibson. (Hugh Jackman's scruffy older brother, maybe.)

This is a parlor game, right? Not a celebrity anything. Because you know, if you can read this, you may already be a celebrity.

Keyser Soze is not a MeFi celebrity. He is an AskMe celebrity. Two distinct groups. languagehat and biscotti also fall into the latter category. (Although, languagehat and biscotti are known for their answers, while Keyser is known for his questions.)

I forgot to add that I picture all of you as 17 year old boys, with pimples and peach-fuzz beards, glasses, and bad hair... empty soda cans, junk food wrappers and pizza boxes surround you, and the video game joystick is within arm's reach.
I wish the truth was that attractive.

... only if there's a pyjama party at someone's mansion, and a giant paint-ball match. Oh, yeah: also open bar.
And there has to be at least one drunken, impromptu wedding to cap it off.

Coo, this was good.

I've learned, I've laughed, we've all had a nice time. Except languagehat. But then, he wears brown corduroy and has glasses and an alphabetised record collection.

Our Activities Director has hinted that he would like to frame up a photo gallery. I suspect that full-scale illusion-shattering will commence with the arrival of a muscular young server.

eh, he hints all the time...it's probably way down on the list. but if the muscular young server is named Raoul, he's mine

I think he's named Nunzio, amberglow.

Prolly right.

I wish I could meet a server named Raoul. Whenever I'm intoduced to one, its name always seems to be "your responsibility".

No, that would be me.

I suspect the "has glasses" would cover a good 90% of us.

Languagehat I imagine as a younger, fitter Socrates

languagehat is actually a Greek fisherman

You're both right! Now come on down to the taverna and we'll listen to rembetika and get smashed on retsina and I'll convince you that the Good is not at all what you had supposed.

keyser soze isn't so much a celebrity so much as the adopted son of MeFi. I imagine him with really touseled hair, from all the MeFites ruffling it and going "awwwwww, did 'your friend' get in trouble again?"

This is perfect.

Er, lest you be fooled, though perhaps I shouldn't say this on the Internet, romakimmy and madamjujujive are actually women of enormous, classic, heart-and-crowd-stopping beauty. Don't let their wit and intelligence throw you off - though that too is nice, if you lack imagination.

*sigh*

There was a time when I would have been included in this list, but, alas, no more.....

Oh, and while I don't really have a face for Shane, his posts always come with the wocka-wocka strains of the theme song to "Shaft." He's a complicated man...dig it!
