I now find myself (temporarily perhaps) in a growing class of MetaFilter users not often mentioned: the relurkers. [More inside.]

Relurkers could be defined as previous lurkers who eventually became regular contributors and, for one reason or another, have rediscovered the infinite pleasures of lurking, much as a writer enjoys nothing more than taking a break and going back to reading pure and simple.

A related phenomenon is episodic, one-thread, one-irresistible-comment temporary delurking, which has its own etiquette and style. I know of at least eight other previously frequent contributors, commonly said to have abandoned MetaFilter, who are, in fact, enthusiastic relurkers. We mainly use e-mail for commenting on the threads which interest us but the passion is still very much alive.

It's in the nature of relurking not to talk about it, but I thought I'd leave this impression, for the sake of completeness. A bit of an "iceberg" situation, I'd say. Who knows? A lot (if not most) of MeFi life may be thriving below the surface...?

I guess I could desrcribe my relationship with Metafilter as a Relurker; I have read this site everyday since early 2001, and yet my contribution index is very low, because I will go through a period of posting lots, then not, then posting again. I seem to be on a posting phase right now, but as I have very little interest in American politics,(and that is a large majority of the posts recently), I feel myself less and less wanting (or able) to participate. Yet, even when I am not actively participating, I am always interested in what is going on around here.

I will say this Senior Cardoso: your contributions to this site are sorely missed.

My experience has been that MeFi is much more personally enjoyable as a lurker. I posted constantly, of course, for about three years running.

Funny thing is, while most threads seem to contain several levels of comment-posting behavior (from meticulously on-topic to snark), I oddly wish for a "meta" thread attached to many existing threads, where I could discuss things without, you know, being involved in the discussion. No repercussions commenting. It couldn't possibly be workable, of course, but I wonder.

I think you speak for us all - or for me, at least. I optimisticaly think that someone could materialize your valuable suggestion (which would enrich the threads, garnering remarks from experienced relurkers) in the form of a "footnote" or an otherwise marginal remark, which users could choose to read or not to read.

As it seems that the relurker is part voyeuristic, part alienated, we need to strive towards identifying those pre-relurkers before they dip into their faux lurking, delurking, or even worse, post relurking.

What happens after you've un-relurked (or de-relurked), as Miguel is in the process of doing? Surely it holds some consequence in the relurker community, especially now that you've outed an entire sect of mefites that were previous thought gone--destroyed cowboys, if you will*. What we need are social scientists: perhaps Mefites themselves who are willing to go underground, deep into the dark underbelly of delurking and, well, lurk about a bit, attend some meetings and report back to us. I bet Miguel wears a dress and Carlos is his husband.

Perhaps now that Miguel has broken his vow of silence, he is in the post-relurk stage, a pretentious phase of seemingly endless bass lines and shattered vocal samples that drift languidly over a field of jagged guitar riffs, occasionally being pulled down sharply by the undercurrents of violins and cellos. And he shall be called Mogwai. (That was a lot of work to compare post-relurk to post-rock. It doesn't really make sense but I'm keeping it so I have two paragraphs.)

I like this place, I do. But truth be told, it takes up a lot of my time 'cause there's just so much interesting stuff (and people) here. That's easy: even though you don't often see them, they are usually there. When you do see them, it's probably because there's some kind of serious action going on.

Based on a story by H.P. Lovecraft, this campy send-up follows an egotistical MeFi member (*insert name of favorite candidate here*) who develops a serum that revives those whose account numbers were once thought dead. However there are gruesome complications as he had not considered the dire consequences of his actions.... Filled with equal parts laughter and gore, Re-Lurkinator spawned a similarly outlandish sequel.
