more inside. metaphilter uses an auto-more-inside box that generates the [more inside] link and adds the extra bit of the comment in, formatted as if it were the first post.

as it stands now, posters need to be quick or the more inside will end up as comment number 2 (rare, but i've seen it happen). any chance we can duplicate the metaphilter model on this one?

All users need to do is have the whole post ready. Then just copy-cut post the leading bits and copy-paste post the trailing bits.

Heh, I just checked Jack's blog, too. Hasn't been updated since March and his new project, mediarumble, is unavailable. I doubt metaphilter.org will ever return, sadly.

Both are very good points, I think. There is a constant and repeated demand for useful features, many of which matt has said he wouldn't mind implementing. I know that matt is a busy guy with many jobs and can't focus on the site as much as you used to. You won't accept any help from the many other programmers that have offered. You are bound to be criticized, and perhaps rightly so. The site can be better maintained if you did accept some help. So, whatchyagonnado?

I'm 50/50 on this particular pony (it seems equally silly and easy to work around, and also, if someone's going to snark about waiting a minute or two for the [MI] bit, then la dee dah), but it concerns me way more that (just as a frexample) Livejournal has this feature and we don't.

No dis on the fine people at LJ and their sage and erudite constituents, but I just hate being jealous of them, especially when they won't let me sit with them during lunch period. It's so embarrassing.

(Did you see the outfit quonsar's wearing today? OMG I know! It's like his mom dresses him, I mean, geez!)

As the bandwidth provider, I can only speak for that component of quonsar's complaint, and that's to say that Matt can do whatever the hell he wants with MetaFilter and I couldn't give a crap. I'm not providing him with bandwidth because I want him to improve MetaFilter, I'm providing him with bandwidth because he's a good guy and I have the bandwidth to spare.

For what it's worth, though, lj doesn't exactly provide a "more inside" feature in the way people seem to ask for it. It provides a custom tag ("lj-cut") that formats the text as a link on the "friends" page and only shows all the contents bracketed by the tag on the full entry page.

Maybe easier to implement? Certainly seems like it might be, since it doesn't involve revising any forms, but I don't know how custom tags work in Matt's system. It might lose in ease of use what it gains in ease of implementation, though I find the Monkeyfilter post form pretty confusing, too.

Sorry, stav - I could have answered that yesterday.

When I started with Mephi it was slow and unwieldy and the style of coding is inconsistent. The version that's available on sourceforge now is a heck of a lot more streamlined and if you check MoFi versus, say, Bookfilter, you'll probably notice a significant difference in load times between old Mephi and new Mephi. The code is even more inconsistent now, though, because there's multiple people's input.

But anyway, I never tried any other 'filter engines -- freefilter, I think, is the other main Mefi-style setup but when I started MoFi there was no support for it -- and Metaphilter has been pretty easy to use and play around with. Of course, now Metaphilter has no real support either, but there are enough people using it around the 'net that someone can always help out.
