I got spammish mail post-posting.

I posted a link. Shortly thereafter, I get creepy spam-mail asking me to post links to Joe Blow's slightly-related site. I ignore. Not long, though, until link appears in comments. Does this ever happen to anyone else?

It doesn't seem terribly out-of-the-ordinary that a non-member would e-mail someone suggesting their related link (either in self-interest or in genuine hope that the thread members would enjoy it).

When you didn't post, he went to someone else. I don't endorse such a course of action, but it doesn't seem to outrageous --

I get emails all the time, but they're not spam. They are related, tho. There are tons of people that want to comment or add a link, but aren't members.

But non-members can see our home pages: if we have contact info on our sites, they can contact us that way.

Nobody outside of metafilter e-mails me because I'm irrelevant. I do, however, get occasional e-mail from other members who either think I'm funny or I should drop dead.

The only outside emails I've ever gotten have been from people thanking me for linking them, or nonmembers adding to a discussion with extra links. The nicest was a thanks from the guys who did that "help us name our boat" site a couple of years ago, because I didn't shit all over the thread like most of the other people that posted to it. The most unexpected was from holgate, who emailed me to answer a question that I had asked in a thread, which went unanswered. He did that on two separate occasions. Nice guy.

Every email I've ever gotten from a member has been good - subtle flirting, offering mp3s, or just general conversation. I don't think I've ever initiated an email exchange myself, though...I'm actually very shy, even online. I have emailed Matt, but no one else, that I can think of.
