MeFiMentor: If you're one of the bazillion new folks here and have a question or two that maybe seems too dorky for MetaTalk and too 'Filter related for AskMe, or maybe you just want to run a front page post by someone, feel free to IM someone who's been around the block a bit. Willing old-timers inside...

you can IM me at home [iamthebestartist] or at work [rutlandfree]. Anyone else?
posted by jessamyn at 5:46 AM on November 19, 2004

Send me an email and I'll probably tell you to fuck off, 'cause I don't like people much, when it comes down to it.

But I heartily approve nice people like jessamyn making an effort to cut through the nastiness that has been threatening to take this place over in recent times, but has been beaten back, all Mr Incredibleish, in the last 24 hrs or so.

So I join jessamyn in inviting non-complete-bastards to step up to the plate and take a stand and be all communitarian and shit. I'll stand back and approve. From a distance.

Send me an email, IM me (riffola23), or find me in #mefi (whenever I'm in there). I am not as nice as jessamyn or amberglow though! But definitely nicer than stav ;)

If you're not comfortable with taking advice from nice people, I'm 'Ryvar' on AIM, and am available for immediate response for 16 completely randomly chosen hours out of any given day, every day.

I'm bored to tears at work 9-5 EST weekdays, and I'm generally a nice, No-Jumpy-Down-Your-Throat kinda person. Anybody's free to e-mail or IM me anytime. Most mxgers don't get thru my work firewall, though, so I use Yahoo. I'm username "argybarple."

Just wait for the "dummies guide to metafilter". 356 pages of useful info from mefi oldies.

Coming soon, dummies guides to "how to drink water", and "how to toast a poptart".

Email and MSN are jacquilynne@canada.com. AIM is just jacquilynne. I'm not as well-filtered as some of the other volunteers, but I've been around awhile, and I don't think anybody hates me, so perhaps I can help.

Anyone can email me. (It's in the profile.) All I do all day is check my email 1000 times and knit, so I welcome any distractions. :D

In one of the MetaTalk threads, someone expressed a concern that AskMe's usefulness would decline with an increased volume of questions. How reasonable would it be to suggest a set limit on the number of questions posted a day? Say, 30 q's a day, and after that you have to wait your turn.

(Too shy to post a suggestion on MeTa just yet..)

Thanks to the new members who trusted me enough to send e-mails with their questions - my "feelgood" factor shot up, so much so that I wonder who's getting more out of the exchange.

Feel free, in any case!

I'm in for n00b-aid too. (Lord knows I could have used it myself.)

And if you're buying, I'm drinking Smithwicks.

Well, I visited #mefi this morning and found it extremely helpful. I learned that I must drop my pants and bend over the couch whenever I post, for one. So thank you to all who took the time to instruct me.

agropyron: AskMe is working just fine, even amidst the flood of newcomers posting. So far it looks like every question or almost every question has been answered. I posted a meaty, pithy question last night/early this morning, and was absolutely astounded that it already had over a dozen lengthy and comprehensive answers by 8:30 this morning.

I'm also available for MeFi consultations, but there seems to be plenty of much more qualified help already. Be patient for replies. (jason23@gmail.com, nacsjason for AIM)

I'm not prolific, I'm not an a-lister, I'm not that verbose, but I am pre-9/11 which should give me some street cred. I'm able to provide advice to any newbs who come along and ask me. Email is in the profile. I'm old school and don't IM. Maybe one day. I also like long walks on the beach, backyard fires, reading, sunsets, good music, horse riding, motorcycles, computers, and s & m.

I dont't want general questions but if you want to show me a post and get my opinion on whether its good for the front-page, I'll happily oblige.

Also, If I give it the thumbs up and you get a negative response, I'll step into the thread and take the blame. (But, if its well-received, I'd rather stay anonymously in the background. What a deal.)

I've been here juuust over a year now, so I'm by no means an old-timer. I'll just say when I was new, there were a set of more experienced users who'd offered me advice -- some of it solicited, some not -- all of which was extraordinarily helpful. (I rather doubt I'd have had the nerve to post my first FPP anywhere nearly as quickly as I did without encouragment from bunches of folks, and a bit of wonderfully constructive editorial criticism from languagehat, who reviewed an early draft for me [thanks again, lh!]) In any case, I'd be more than willing to repay my karmic debt; so if you have any questions, particularly ones that you might prefer to send to a newer member, feel free to send them along, and I'll happily share the little I know.

I'd say don't underestimate how well MetaFilter + Email go together. You don't have to say everything here, and often times you'll make a more interesting connection with someone cool if you take it offline for a while.
posted by scarabic at 11:02 AM on November 20, 2004

If you're going to ask for advice you might want to pick a member in the 10,000s and below. And most certainly don't go above the 14000s.

You'll probably end up asking someone who has no idea what best of the web is, and has decided metafilter is what they envision it to be. Yes fenriq, I'm looking at you.
