If I could filter out all the news that would be pretty nice. December 11, 2004 12:28 PM   Subscribe

Why aren't subjects categorized so I don't have to read the news more than once? I see that even here I am expected to categorize my posting. If I could filter out all the news that would be pretty nice.

MetaTalk is for a limited number of subjects: if it doesn't fit in one of these categories, it doesn't belong here. I think that categories would be next to impossible on MetaFilter proper, where literally anything goes.

With the added reality, that creating a category for something encourages more of it, because, hey, if there's a category, it must be allowed, right?

I thought the category was 'best of the web'.

Adding tagging capabilities, a la flickr or del.icio.us might be interesting, but I'm not sure that it would be worth the effort, because after tagging comes sorting by tags, and searching by tag, and blah blah ponies blah.

Actually, I kinda like the idea of categories. But it'd sure be a bitch to go through the thousands of old threads and categorize them.

Thank you for joining our community. Please note that the $5 entitles you to very little. Please hang up and try again.

People are really bad at metadata. No metadata at all is almost always better than half-assed metadata. scarabic, c'mere and back me up on this, yo.

Just FYI, reflection, and I'll be nice for a change, this is not exactly a new issue around here. Maybe you might want to look at some of the metatalk archives.

Well, reflection, if it is so irratating, why don't you just go to Newsmap?
