angry modem just moved to Minneapolis, so I think we should have a meet-up in his honor. Any takers? How about the weekend of the 21st?

well, after lastmeasuring monkeyfilter, you probably shouldn't have mentioned me :)

and 21st is bad for me, maybe the next one after that?
posted by angry modem at 9:27 PM on January 2, 2005

Works for me. The only weekend that doesn't work for me this month is the 14th.

I'm going to put a bounty on his head. Someone should show up and punch him in the nose. Any takers?

If by bounty, you mean hug, then yes!
posted by Zosia Blue at 10:27 PM on January 2, 2005

T G C, I'll do it for free drinks. I mean, that was the original offer, wasn't it?

"in his honor"... Is that a joke?

Shh, mefites, don't hate. THis is a meet-up thread, not a pile-on thread.

Hey, if you travel a sizable distance to come punch a guy from the internet in the face, how could I deny someone that?
posted by angry modem at 10:41 PM on January 2, 2005

zosia, you're really sweet, but so innocent.

Somebody give me odds on whether the modem gets a punch on the nose or not. Let the gambling begin!!!

Don't ruin my reputation as the hardest ass in Minnesota. Er.

I'm sure there might be, though that's something Minnesota Lutherans don't like to talk about.
But as they say near Lake Woebegon, "whatever happens, happens".

I'm in any weekend but the weekend preceding MLK day.
posted by Lola_G at 7:17 AM on January 3, 2005

As always, I'm interested but iffy on whether I'd be able to make it. MLK weekend would be flat out for me; the weekends before and after would be possible.

Longshot: or, everybody could come see my band play on Thursday, 1/20 and we could achieve Meetup while simultaneously pumping our attendence numbers up into the double digits!

In the land of the stoic flabby lutherans, the hard assed are kings.

I'm in for any Friday, Saturday or Sunday. Weeknights are right out as I now work to eleven in yonder outer-ring suburbs.
posted by nathan_teske at 7:47 AM on January 3, 2005

I hope people actually show up this time...
posted by norm at 8:33 AM on January 3, 2005

COBRA! - where will your band be playing?

I'm in if we can meet downtown or in St. Paul. Tiburon might be fun.
posted by Coffeemate at 8:52 AM on January 3, 2005

What about Liquor Lyle's?
posted by Lola_G at 9:18 AM on January 3, 2005

COBRA! - where will your band be playing?

The Lone Tree Annex; it's the basement of the Lone Tree across from Block E. It's a cool place... it looks sort of like a supervillain's rec room.
posted by COBRA! at 9:27 AM on January 3, 2005

Lyle's is rock solid, but it's always packed. I suppose that goes for any place on a Fri/Sat, though.

On preview, Holy shit. Lone Tree has $2 drinks on Thurs.

Are we going to be able to get people out on a weeknight, though?
posted by esch at 10:13 AM on January 3, 2005

What weekend are we talking about, 28/29th? Anywhere downtown is fine. Why not The Local?

On preview: nathan cannot make it on week nights. Let's stick with Sat & Sun.
posted by Juicylicious at 10:38 AM on January 3, 2005

I hope the Lone Tree Annex is nothing like the Lone Tree.

(Think Butabi Bros.)

Other suggestions...Herkeimer, Famous Dave's Uptown (though there will probably be a cover because of bands). Lyle's is good if we get there early enough. Bulldog -- on Lyndale.

I don't know St. Paul very well, but I am always game.
posted by Lola_G at 11:26 AM on January 3, 2005

Nathan is a loser for not being able to go out during the week. Looo-zer!

Lyle's is always good. I hear okay things about the Bulldog. The Local, though, seems to always be mobbed and their service is fully indifferent. Another option, if this starts up around 8 or so-- Rudolph's is really nice since the remodel, and they have good late night drink specials.
posted by Scooter at 12:55 PM on January 3, 2005

I 2nd Rudolphs, but earlier maybe better for getting seats.
posted by Juicylicious at 1:04 PM on January 3, 2005

Rudolph's also has an early happy hour - 4 to 7, so that's a good option if people want to do it early.

How "Minneapolis" are we? Will people be driving in from the suburbs?
posted by Coffeemate at 1:05 PM on January 3, 2005

here we go again:

in St. Paul: the Liffey or Moscow on the Hill would be my recommendations (Sakura has good sushi...)
in Minneapolis: Gluek's now has wireless internet; the Local is fine, the Dakota is cool but likely busy on a weekend; otherwise there's always the Chatterbox; if we could reserve a couch / Atari I'd say it is the best.
posted by norm at 1:11 PM on January 3, 2005

Not to be the contrarian amongst us but...

I was at Rudolph's the other night and I agree with Scooter with respect to the bar but here is my concern, if there are great numbers of us we will have to sit in the restaurant which has a very "Applebee's" vibe...

Just a thought.
posted by Lola_G at 1:12 PM on January 3, 2005

On second thought, why fight it?

From above:

Lyle's is rock solid

Lyle's is always good.

Again, I am game for St. Paul but I think any suburbanite comes from the Western 'burbs. Well, at least Zosia and that's all that matters.
posted by Lola_G at 1:16 PM on January 3, 2005

...or we could all go to Nye's and get filthy drunk then sing 50s and 60s pop standards...
posted by norm at 1:19 PM on January 3, 2005

Yeah, I'm from the suburbs and a non-driver most of the time, so St. Paul would be a pain in the ass for me to get to. But if I could catch a ride with someone, it's all good.

Lyle's sounds good to me, but I'm game for wherever. The weekend of the 28th is perfect for me, too.
posted by Zosia Blue at 1:22 PM on January 3, 2005

Zosia -- I'll drive you if you get to downtown/uptown depending on when we go. (I work downtown. Live uptown).
posted by Lola_G at 1:31 PM on January 3, 2005

Not to be a naysayer, but . . . Lyles smells. It does. Really. I think that this should be taken into account for non-smokers. And, the food is horrible if anyone is hungry. Not to mention the parking problem when it gets busy as it will be on a Saturday.

There probably aren't going to be more than a dozen people and Rudolph's bar easily handles that size of a group. Otherwise, Hierkimers is okay. Doesn't the Chatterbox only serve beer and wine?
posted by Juicylicious at 1:57 PM on January 3, 2005

In that case, I vote Rudolph's. I'm easily swayed.

Lola -- thanks! If we end up in St. Paul, I'll definitely take you up on that offer.
posted by Zosia Blue at 2:29 PM on January 3, 2005

Chatterbox is a beer and wine gig last I checked.

Herkimer has really good beer, so does Rock Bottom.

Rudy's is a good idea because it's right in the center of things, so we can be mobile if need be.

I'm basically up for anywhere, anytime. Count my ass in.

I like lines.
posted by esch at 2:38 PM on January 3, 2005

Lola - based on your restaraunt recommendations, you and I are almost certainly neighbors (I'm 31st and Lyndale). Christ, I can see Herkimer if I lean out the door when I pick up my mail.

And no one adjust plans for me. I can easily get my schedule moved around to accomodate a Thursday night binge drinking I mean meetup.

something wifi would be cool.
posted by angry modem at 4:19 PM on January 3, 2005

Rock Bottom is wifi. I'm okay with that. And it is huge, has food, plenty of parking, and tada..... pool tables.
posted by Juicylicious at 6:52 PM on January 3, 2005

nathan, you're actually smack dab between Lola and I. How nice for you :)
posted by Juicylicious at 6:54 PM on January 3, 2005

Rock Bottom is wifi, huge, food, has parking and pool tables. Plus they have fricking awesome microbrews.

Do we have a winner?
posted by esch at 7:01 PM on January 3, 2005

Sure. I'm all for some wifi access and drunk posting. What day? Fridays are usually best for me, but like I said, I'm flexible.

Rock Bottom sounds good.

I'm flexible.

Heh.

7:04, or after my fourth pint.

(we're meeting at seven right?)

8 will work better for me if it's a Friday; 7 is a fine for a Saturday. You wanted Saturday, right, esch?

Juciy, Lola - Our powers combined form the 55408 Triumverate of Power. Shh-shh-shaw! (And oh, if you two car pool, can I beg in on a care-share as well? For the environment, of course.)
posted by nathan_teske at 11:01 PM on January 3, 2005

Both Rock Bottom and Rudolph's are in walking distance for me, if the weather's not particularly nasty. So's Lyle's, of course, but it scares me.

8 will work better for me if it's a Friday; 7 is a fine for a Saturday.

Same here.

I'm a Carleton student down in Northfield without a car. Would any of you guys be willing to hook me up with a ride there and back? I'll cover the cost of gas, of course. My school does run a bus to the Cities on weekends, but my options are either getting to the Airport or Downtown Minneapolis around 3:00 or 9:00, neither of which are very ideal, and the 9:00 bus is the last one back to school.
posted by SemiSophos at 6:18 AM on January 4, 2005

what time does the group sex start?

Whenever you get there, q.

If you come, err...*cough*, there will certainly be group sex.

Now I feel dirty.

Nathan, if we go Saturday, I can drive. I have free parking downtown a few blocks away. If we go Friday, I can drive home if you catch the bus.

While I am certainly altruistic...Northfield would be quite the stretch. Sorry!

Looks like 7 on Saturday sounds like Optimus Prime in this instance.

The 29th, 7 PM, at Rock Bottom. Sound good?

Looks good, Zosia Blue. Thanks for lighting a fire under our collective asses.

Maybe I skipped over it and I don't live in Minneapolis anymore so I won't be attending, but why did no one suggest Nye's? It is huge, awesome and has the world's most dangerous polka band. If you want to really show angry modem what mpls/st.paul is all about, do it there!!

NYE'S! NYE'S! NYE'S!

posted by norm at 2:25 PM on January 4, 2005

Any time works for me, I will try to be there whenever or wherever this happens...Saturday nights I usually close bar so a Friday would be better personally. And how come nobody has suggested the Triple Rock?!
posted by baphomet at 2:30 PM on January 4, 2005

The Rock is a little too Punk Rock. Plus it's small as a thimble and gets packed as hell. Also, it isn't wifi.

I'm still mad about the patio. >:|

Damn, always late to the conversation.

The 29th is probably out for me, but I hope everyone else has a great time.
