"Asses of Evil" blogad January 6, 2005 5:03 AM   Subscribe

Not my call, but I don't think that "Asses of Evil" blogad does anything for MetaFilter's aesthetic, perceived image or credibility.

I think it fits in perfectly with the general leanings of the majority of MeFites. If Matt didn't think it was appropriate it wouldn't be here.

Regardless of the left/right thing, it doesn't fit perfectly with the general intelligence of the majority of MeFites.

Also, a majority view might exist, but that shouldn't imply that minority views are less welcome.

That's the worst thing I've seen on Metafilter all day.

I've seen that add around, and it always pisses me off. What is says to me is that any resistance to or rejection of the current administration is just as screwball and zany as a mugging photo on a t-shirt. In an inverse way, the ad is practically an admonishment for us liberals to c'mon, lighten up on this bunch of nutso characters.

They're homicidal sociopaths who are purposefully destroying democracy. A snapshot of W with his eyes crossed is like a slap in the face.

Thanks for giving forum to my rancor, nthdegx.

[That said, it's Matt's site and Matt's call.]

Someone reads the ads? ;-P

Like. Who cares.

The Tsunami Relief ad that is above it features a picture of a woman and there's some transparent GIF thing going on that probably works okay if it's shown over a white background but on the sidebar's blue background makes it look like she has a case of pervasive blue smallpox. Plus the text below it is almost unreadable. Might be a good time for blogad review in general.

I don't see any ads! Yeay!

(does anyone have a link to the offending "Asses of Evil" one?)

Bizarrely there is an ad call out every few months. I guess they grab some peoples attention the way the copyright date being wrong used to grab mine.

I'm often wildly amused by the inappropriateness of google adwords on other sites though once they been pointed out.

Yeah, it was kind of a borderline thing, but I took the ad ages ago during the election run up and they kept advertising, so I kept taking the money. It should be up in a couple days.

Why would anybody expect MetaFilter to have "credibility"?

Also, does MeFi have any single "perceived image"? What "image" would that be? I know one person who sees MeFi as "a bunch of pretentious whiners who can't be heard over the noise on SlashDot". Is that the image to which you refer, nth? ;-P

MetaFilter: If you keep paying us, Matt will keep taking your money.

I know you're joking, but, fwiw, Matt refunded the money I gave for a text-ad for the tsunami fund on amazon. Yet another example of his profound sanctity.

Mischief -- if anything it's the image of MetaFilter not having any individual image: something that the ad in question by no means conveys. Crunch -- this thread was in no way a Matt diss. In fact Matt strikes me as one of those magical people whose mind isn't made up about every last damn thing under the sun, so perhaps a little input from the community is appreciated now and then ;)

Or, put another way, the ad contributes to a more singular image of MeFi as a partisan link depot, which it's not [cue Limbaughvian tsunami of insistence that it is]. And if it is, then it shouldn't be; and it certainly shouldn't be in the inane way suggested by the ad.
