Chicago meet-up follow-up January 30, 2005 7:00 PM Subscribe
We had a meetup in Chicago. Pictures courtesy of me3dia. A bunch of people who promised to attend were conspicuously absent. Much fun was had nonetheless.

Please tell me you were gentle with S@L. And vice versa. posted by jonmc at 7:09 PM on January 30, 2005
Oh yes, we were quite genial. Just because we don't all share the same political views doesn't mean we can't have a beer together. posted by me3dia at 7:16 PM on January 30, 2005
That Steve_at_Linnwood is a goofy-lookin' fucker, you have to admit. There's a light through his head! posted by mr_crash_davis at 7:24 PM on January 30, 2005
Are there captions on there somewhere explaining who specifically was who and that I somehow missed? posted by orange swan at 7:24 PM on January 30, 2005
Yes, orange swan. posted by trharlan at 7:37 PM on January 30, 2005

Oh, okay. I had viewed the slideshow, which didn't have captions. posted by orange swan at 7:45 PM on January 30, 2005
looks like fun--but no shoutouts? posted by amberglow at 7:59 PM on January 30, 2005
There were not the supplies. There were more pictures, I think, but I suppose they didn't turn out. posted by kenko at 8:02 PM on January 30, 2005
*chagrined*
Sorry I missed it. I'll buy the first pitcher next time. posted by felix betachat at 8:03 PM on January 30, 2005
You kids looked like you tied one on, some of youse.

Oh, I just picked a few. I'll add the rest. posted by me3dia at 8:10 PM on January 30, 2005
I didn't promise, living out of town, but I missed y'all anyway. I thought about hitting Madison, actually, but the flu intervened. posted by dhartung at 8:16 PM on January 30, 2005
I just realized I forgot to take a picture of the pancakes sign. Oh well. posted by me3dia at 8:30 PM on January 30, 2005
A fine meet-up indeed. Metafilter OWNED that Hopleaf hallway Saturday night! All I needed was good conversation and access to the huge beer selection, and I got both, so I was happy no matter where we had to stand.
I was relieved that trharlan and corpse broke up the eyeglass majority we had going - it was starting to look like a mathclub social. A hip mathclub social, but still...
ON PREVIEW: the Pancake sign really brought it all together. That and the Metafiler jersey Me3edia was sporting. posted by Slack-a-gogo at 8:44 PM on January 30, 2005
Very cool. Makes me want a pint.
Now.

Eh, I wasn't trying too hard. I didn't use a flash so as not to blind people at close range, and my four-year-old camera isn't focusing as sharply as it used to. Time to upgrade. posted by me3dia at 9:01 PM on January 30, 2005
Oh sure, DaShiv's photos may have that whole lighting thing going for them, but me3dia's "witness protection" style lets you fill in the blanks and create your own mental pictures of those in attendance. posted by Slack-a-gogo at 9:13 PM on January 30, 2005
I'm sorry I missed it. Would have like to throw down with S@L and tharlan, heheh. I blame my pneumonia. Man, the Hopleaf sure is a lot brighter than I remember it! posted by KevinSkomsvold at 9:38 PM on January 30, 2005
In honor of the meetup, I had a watery Mexican beer at the taqueria across the street from my theater when I finally left at midnight. posted by goatdog at 10:56 PM on January 30, 2005
Why has S@L got a cowpat on his head? posted by i_cola at 2:02 AM on January 31, 2005
Pretty pics - very atmospheric. Thanks for sharing. Looks like you had fun.
I'm glad there were no shoutouts - it would just have been another chance for me to be completely ignored. That's right, I've never had a shoutout, you bastards. Screw you all. posted by iconomy at 4:28 AM on January 31, 2005
Oh, bitch, bitch, bitch.

Iconomy, I promise and old-school shoutout at the next one. Courtesy of myself and Bea Arthur. posted by KevinSkomsvold at 7:10 AM on January 31, 2005
I like this picture because it looks like I'm gearing up to punch trharlan in the mouth.
Which I totally did. posted by jennyb at 7:59 AM on January 31, 2005
S@L looks just like I pictured him.
Does anyone else think it would be fun to save some money, take a year off and 'follow The Meetups' Grateful Dead-style? Has anyone in the history of Metafilter ever done this? Making it to every meetup held in a given year... there's an article in there somewhere. 'My Meta Year' or something like that. posted by Fuzzy Monster at 8:05 AM on January 31, 2005

Sometimes meetups are held in different locations, far removed, at the same time, soyou couldn't really make it to every one. posted by kenko at 8:50 AM on January 31, 2005
in honor of the meet-up, i blew off four of the six other things mysteriously scheduled at the last minute for the same night.
SisterHavana - your presence would have helped our side in the Urge Overkill debate.
me3dia - looking at the pictures on my work computer I can actually make out faces, so I apologize for any slight of you camera skills. Now I can actually see trharlan's stoicness clear as day. posted by Slack-a-gogo at 9:24 AM on January 31, 2005
No charity shoutouts! posted by iconomy at 10:10 AM on January 31, 2005

Nice meeting you all. The move to Konak was great, a much more conducive envoirnment for conversation, and banana beer binge drinking. posted by corpse at 10:21 AM on January 31, 2005
I think he's saying that he pictured you all blurry and with a half-transparent head. Whether or not that's good depends on your crowd, I suppose. posted by ludwig_van at 12:37 PM on January 31, 2005
I'd say that's good. It's like going to a movie based on a book you read and the characters look like you'd pictured.
In your case, Steve, you have very similar political views to my friend Ed, so I always pictured you looking kind of like him. And guess what? You do! posted by Fuzzy Monster at 12:41 PM on January 31, 2005

I was one of the flakers. I had a very strange weekend in which I did absolutely nothing I'd planned to, involving trips to both Northwestern Medical Hospital and Illinois Masonic Hospital visiting friends with freak injuries. Next time, hopefully. posted by eamondaly at 1:09 PM on January 31, 2005
Chicago's the closest a meetup's ever going to come my way, I'm guessing. I'm glad you all had such a great time!

amberglow: you forgot Poland.
I mean, Canada. Who is the current Canadian meet-up champ?
Full Disclosure: I didn't even make it to the last Toronto meetup, which was not only happening in the city where I live, but on my very street, about ten minutes away from my apartment.
In my defense, I was out of town... but if there is a Canadian meet-up champ, it sure as Hell ain't me.
S@L looks like Hank Hill. Cool. posted by dodgygeezer at 1:17 PM on January 31, 2005

can I add a vote for having the next Chicago meetup after the 15th of the month? Rent always wipes me out, and it was the only thing holding me back from showing up and showing down. posted by mrs.pants at 9:18 AM on February 10, 2005
