I think that NickDouglas wants me to get my own blog.
As something of a noob, I'm curious as to what the consensus is on what makes a "get your own goddamn blog and quit bothering us" post. I've done a little back reading on MeTa and finding a consensus is difficult. Help me not do it again. Thanks.

I wouldn't say that you did NOTHING wrong. Posts are better (for me at least) when they don't wear their positions on their sleeve (or wave them around like a banner, in this case.)

Present the information, let the reader decide.

Which is better:

George Bush found in crackhouse snorting coke off hooker's tits

or

George Bush found in crackhouse snorting coke off hooker's tits! Well, Dub is at it again! But we all knew this would happen! Should we impeach him? Yes we should! If you disagree then you're wrong because the man is Hitler. HITLER, PEOPLE!

Rather embarrassing, really, getting autopsied by MeFiters.

I made a clumsy reference to a Homer Simpson quote: "Your ideas are intriguing to me and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter." This term is used both as a snark and an encouragement, and sometimes as both at once (as in this case). I expected someone to catch the reference immediately. I need to watch less TV.

I did not at all mean that Phat should get a blog. This was a good post.

I acknowledge that my blog is mediocre. I also acknowledge that I am cuter without glasses.

I don't see how this merits a thread full of verbal abuse, but I can't cast the first stone.

Phat, everyone, I'm sorry. Fewer foot-in-mouth snarks, more insightful constructive commentary.

Someone called me Dick Nouglas in third grade.

I'm really confused. Were comments deleted in the MeFi thread? I saw ND's comment and took it for a compliment. Pretending to call yourself out in MeTa so that other people can tell you that you're cool and someone else (who wasn't even insulting you) is a dick is really lame. Also, dull. I don't mind pointless MeTa mock autocallouts when they're full of drama and entertaining, but this is just tedious.

anapestic : "Pretending to call yourself out in MeTa so that other people can tell you that you're cool and someone else (who wasn't even insulting you) is a dick is really lame. Also, dull."

Good thing that isn't what happened here. Phatlobley took ND's comment as a complaint, not a compliment. If PhatLobley had pretended to call himself out in order to cull compliments and show that ND is a dick, that would be really lame. And dull. But that's not what happened here, so what's your point?

posted by CunningLinguist at 6:32 AM on March 8, 2005

I honestly didn't know what the consensus view was, and like I said above, I wasn't looking for validation or an apology from Nick. I misinterpreted his comment and based on that wanted the community to clarify for me what made a post that would be better posted in one's own blog.

Can I go on record as saying that the word "cute," when applied to men sounds insipid? It's a word you apply to puppy dogs, and little children with pales and shovels.

Plus, it goes nowhere. If you tell a guy he's buff, he can work out to accentuate it. Tell a dude he's handsome, he'll pay attention to his grooming. Tell him he's "cute," and what's he supposed to do, flap his lips and gurgle like an infant?

What is true? Are you saying that Anil only comes on the 3 flavors of MeFi to talk about his work? The last time I remember him posting was to find out how to free a frozen bolt from his bathroom sink. My guess would be that if he posted about his job, it was directly in response to a question posted to him, or in general that he could answer. Am I wrong?
