Raleigh Durham meetup? March 11, 2005 1:11 PM   Subscribe

Raleigh/Durham Meetup! • Who, What, Sunday the 20th, Where, I'll be in town/why not?, How.

In short, I'll be down in the Research Triangle area, staying in Raleigh, and would like to get together for biscuits/food/etc. with Marxchivist and others [MeFibrarian Posse or no] next Sunday either lunchish or lateish. Anyone got a good location or other ideas?

Anybody up for Cup A Joe on Hillsborough Street? Early afternoon (before 3 PM) or after 7 PM best for me.

sheee-at. i wish you guys were convocating closer to the mountains... i've yet to partake in a successful mefi meetup. i still may make the drive though, because tribalism is so cool.

Yeah, why doesn't anyone ever come to Asheville? Let's have our own mini mefi mofi meetup moonbird -

So close, and yet so far! On the off chance that someone is coming through Wilmington through this thing, I would kill babies for a ride.

Sounds like fun, jessamyn; I'm down. If folks are interested in doing a semi-potluck, I'll offer our house for dinner/wine/hanging out on Sunday. It can accommodate plenty of folks and is located downtown a few blocks from the Krispy Kreme (don't laugh, it's a significant landmark around here). I find that kind of thing more comfortable than the typical coffeehouse, and love to cook, so it's no problem to make a big curry or something, and let others bring salad, wine, appetizer, desert, etc. Of course, you don't have to bring anything, since you're the guest of honor. :)

Let's see, other possibilities:

For coffee and snack, I'd choose Helios on Glenwood Avenue, between Hillsborough and Peace, over Cup A Joe (aka Cup A Smoke), mainly because it has couches and a nicer outdoor area. Plus, the smoking section is so bad at CAJ that spending an hour on the *non*-smoking side will leave clothes smelling. I work nearby and drink their coffee every day, but almost never sit down for more than a few minutes.

If folks want to do a good, relatively cheap lunch/dinner, Lilly's Pizza in Five Points is high quality, with the Third Place coffeehouse right next door, and NeoMonde Deli just off Hillsborough near the beltline has great cheap Mediterranean eats (the baba ghanoush is fabulous).

Alternatively, for a later thing, the downtown bar Kings does the free and relatively chill Neu Romance on Sunday evenings from 9-2. They close off the back, set up a DJ at the bar and spin a mix of soul, house, breaks, etc., and usually serve free food. Last time I went, free sushi appeared on the bar around 11 (disclaimer: I helped start the night a few years back and DJ'd there occasionally; my roommate does the visuals).

Give me a day and I can probably come up with some more options. Looking forward to it, whatever we decide!

mediareport: I'm horrible at arranging things like this, that all sounds good. I kinda like the idea of your house (I'll bring pie!).

It's really no trouble to host, honest; roommate Dave is cool with it, too. If we have more than 4-5 folks, I might need help with the main course, but other than that, there's no problem with folks hanging out here for dinner, etc. And if folks want to come up from Asheville or wherever and crash overnight, that's cool, too. You picked a perfect day, jessamyn; Monday's, like, my Sunday. :)

Well, looks like Marxchivist, jessamyn and I agree: the Raleigh (/Durham/Chapel Hill) meetup is a semi-potluck at my place near the Krispy Kreme downtown this Sunday at 7pm. I'll cover the main course, you BYOB and a side dish or dessert. Simpsons while we eat. :) And if folks want, we can head out to a bar later for drinks and music.

Anyone in the area is welcome to show up, just RSVP to tod datmonkeytimed otorg (got it?) so I'll know how many folks are coming and can give you my address. My google phonebook address is two years out of date, so don't use that.

Mi casa, su casa, for a couple of hours anyway. :)

Don't hesitate to email.

Sauteed shrimp and veggies over pasta, covered in a spicy peanut sauce. Now's the time to object.

*waits, salivates*

Or sauteed tofu and veggies, covered in a coconut milk curry sauce. (Just realized I should offer a choice, in case of vegetarianism and/or seafood/peanut allergy.)

I've lived by myself since 1994, if somebody else cooks it, I'll eat it.

I don't eat seafood, or tofu, but I can bring my own chicken/substitute if it's a totally veggie household. Or brown rice with peanut sauce is great, you have rice? I like pasta and vegetables just fine. I eat seitan though, if that's an option.

Sounds like we'll be fine. I'm not rabidly vegetarian and roomie devours flesh daily, so it's no problem having chicken in the mix instead of shrimp. No need to bring any.

this was fun. mediareport made good thai. we discussed recent mefi posts and mefi people and politics and public space and library filters. mediareport showed us video of his recent trip to an antiquarian book fair (edward abbey illustrated by r. crumb, l. frank baum, h.p. lovecraft, racist children's books) . later we went to kings for dj's (mediareport and rattmouth among them) and visuals (mediareport's housemate) and a funk band. i met roller derby women! the roller derby women brought a cake in the form of dj turntables with licorice sticks for tonearms. jessamyn is speaking on the campus where i work today. a full and stimulating evening.
