Well I'll be fucked. Most humble apologies for pulling that shit on the front page. I should have thought of the asshole employers with their bastard net filters that watch for every occurence of four letter words and send out motherfucking termination notices accordingly.

As Jairus has also noted...a quick search revealed close to a dozen fucks on the front page in the last year.

Hands up anyone who's joined the bread cues as a result.

I was thinking of putting a NSFW tag, actually snsranch...but I kind of figured (a) it's blaringly obvious what you're going to get if you visit the links (b) once you get to those sites, you still have to click to download an mp3. Its not like NSFW images that will get captured by the proxy server for later perusal by the boss. There's really no way anyone could "accidentally" listen to these tracks at work.

if not here than where? i realize you have good intentions, but metafilter is not a no-fuck zone. Generally it just isn't relevant to the wording of a good post---hence, it isn't used. When it relevant, i say, fuck away.

But it kind of becomes irrelevant when the NSFW tag is on the same page where the NSFW language exists, doesn't it? NSFW tag is there to prevent a person from going to a page that might be objectionable. But if you put the language right on the front page, it's already too late.

I realize this isn't the first time the F-bomb has been dropped on the front page. But it's the first time I decided to complain about it.

Obviously, I don't think it's appropriate. Beyond that, I'm kinda curious as to how the rest of the community and #1 feel about the use of NSFW language on the front page. If no one else thinks it matters, I'll STFU.

NSFW language

This is the issue I take with your complaint. NSFW images - understandable. NSFW pages - understandable. But a single swear word, in context (ie. part of a song title)? Unless you work at a nunnery I fail to see how this could possibly be a problem "at work". Seriously. Unless you can show me some evidence that someone has actually been disciplined for visiting a page with a single occurrence of "fuck" on it, in which case, fair call. From my experience, at most workplaces you're more likely to get in trouble for wasting time at Metafilter, than for the occurrence of a single swear word.

I don't think there's any need to censor ourselves when the use of the word is appropriate. It's pretty hard to describe a link to a rendition of "Fuck the Police" without using the word "fuck".

That said, there's a prominent word that appears over and over again in those mp3's that Jimbob linked to that I think would generate universal condemnation if it was used on the front page in any but the most careful manner....

For that post it's understandable. Or it could have been constructed differently, [MI] or whatnot.

And I swear. A lot in fact. I try to limit it when I'm around older people at least. But I don't reallllllly like to see it or hear it from the media so much. It's so gratuitous these days. I know it's probably silly but I prefer not to read it outside of the web......I do actually prefer f##k or whatever. Strange sensibilities I suppose.

And I guess I like to think that the blue is the part of MeFi that is 'shown' to the public, the public face if you will. It's certainly not as evocative as the suicide girls kerfuffle but if I was just a casual visitor I'd rather I didn't have to be accosted by swearing at the front door here.

Maybe the title wasn't in best taste, but there's no way I'd want to visit a metafilter that banned certain words from the front page. Anyone who's in a situation where they might be embarassed by seeing a few swear words in a paragraph of text shouldn't be surfing MeFi to begin with.
