All but one of the first thirteen comments in this thread are terrible.

If you don't like the thread, fine. Take it to MeTa. Shitting up a thread that way doesn't help, and it undermines worthwhile posts like flarbuse's.

The worst part: the Komedy King replies aren't even funny.

OC: you can't polish a turd.
posted by mischief at 8:40 AM on May 1, 2005

No, but you can avoid smearing it all over yourself.
posted by Optimus Chyme at 8:41 AM on May 1, 2005

Yeah, with the really bad ones, people don't waste time with MeTa. My sense is that people are calling for a deletion there, so they throw a)"throwaway" comments in and b)comments that show strong disapproval in there as a means to discourage these sorts of posts.

For a second, I was pretty sure that the one "good" comment in there was this one:

I got drunk last night

Don't sweat it OC the thread is terminated anyways it just doesn't know it yet.

I thought that thread was fine. Thing is, it's not really 'newsfilter.' I've seen crap all over about this story, but if anybody had bothered to read the link, they would've seen that this wasn't nameless, faceless 'national coverage;' it was a pretty funny bunch of comments by local people who shook their heads at 'that ridiculous woman.'

I think Optimus Chyme is the sock puppet for Sonserae.

Actually, OC, flarbuse's comment is no different than any other. The rest of us were just exercising our poetic license.

I love it when newbies get all flustered; they're so cute!!! ;-P

mischief: "I love it when newbies get all flustered; they're so cute!!! ;-P"

There are more of us than there are of you. Hell, metafilter was shit before we got here, anyhow.

Besides, 'poetic license' only applies to people who aren't being idiots. That counts y'all out. 'Groaning' isn't the best use of bandwidth, friend.

It's nice that this new 'tag post' option works for comments, too.

koeselitz: you're right, but I think if matt gets a head's-up on thirteen or seventeen bad comments out of ~20, the whole thread is going in the garbage.

It's a mandate. The people have spoken.

MetaFilter: The usual bunch of idiots.
posted by mischief at 9:06 AM on May 1, 2005

exlotuseater: I disagree. I've never seen Matt say, "well, this post doesn't look so bad, but if you guys don't like it, I'll delete it." I have, on the other hand, seen Matt say, "the first dozen comments here are not useful. I'm deleting them."
posted by koeselitz at 9:08 AM on May 1, 2005

Of course, it seems like no good to second-guess Matt, but if I were him, I wouldn't do anything.

Btw OC, are you making any distinction between those who are criticizing the FPP itself and those who are criticizing the content of the link? I'll grant you the former, but the latter certainly do belong in the blue.
posted by mischief at 9:27 AM on May 1, 2005

It's a lame post, but it'd be nice if people could ignore dumb stuff and move along.

I just pruned all the crap, lets see if it stays on point.

koeselitz: I grant that you were correct. It still doesn't belong on the front page. On preview: we'll see.
posted by exlotuseater at 9:38 AM on May 1, 2005

... and now, OC, you can polish my initial comment in the thread. ;-P

Have a good afternoon, y'all! I'm headed down for a pitcher of beer and watch the race in Talledega!

I wish Matt hadn't pruned.

We either respect the right of our fellow Mefites to have opinions we dislike or even detest, or we don't. The commenters had a reason -- what reason, I don't know -- for making crappy comments. Perhaps it was their way of saying they thought the post sucked.

Now, I wish people who thought posts "suck" would just refrain in commenting on those posts, and I've said that many times before.

But if they can't managed that restraint, I'd rather see their crappy comments and know that we respect our fellows' right to have opinions we don't like (and allow us to modify our opinions of them in light of their comments) than to see a faux-"pristine" thread.

It just seems more honest and respectful.

I don't mind the pruning, but the link to this thread should have remained, probably.

I recommend the Fark thread, full of hilarious photoshopping goodness. Go there and help preserve Metafilter's self-loathing solemnity.

I've got $5 in my pocket that says otherwise.

Wolfdog, until now I never noticed how much Dexter Douglas resembles our Matt:

Isn't this so much more interesting than that dumb 'runaway bride' story?
posted by wendell at 12:07 PM on May 1, 2005

Why didn't you delete the post, Matt? It's a major news story about something completely trivial. It's not even worth being on all the news stations and newspapers, which it is. Much less on MeFi. I can't see how it's even remotely FPP worthy.

Oh, cool. Someone who can explain what "self-loathing solemnity" is. I mean, I get *self-righteous* solemnity fine, but can't for the life of me figure out what Saucy Intruder is talking about. I'm all ears, sgt.

No no. saucy_intruder's pic redeems this thread. mediareport, seriously, re-look at that picture. If you don't get it, try reading the file name. If that doesn't help, I'll give you a hint...

Go see Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

But hey, you don't have to. You can, instead, continue snarking at people from the sidelines without (as you say) "hav[ing] much to add to the discussion." Go ahead and let us know when you have something worth spending time with.
