lame-ass shill for some lame-ass shirts May 24, 2005 2:40 PM   Subscribe

I don't know what it was about this post that makes me suspicious. (Wait, it's the cafepress link.) I can't say for *sure* that this is a lame-ass shill for some lame-ass shirts. (more inside)

The mefi user who made the post doesn't have the same name as the person who runs the website, but the one and only ask.metafilter question was also wedding related. Probably she just found this stumbling around for wedding stuff, but it seems kind of tacky.

I guess I could have just flagged it, but I've never done a callout before.

So you're suspicious and yet you think she probably just found it while stumbling around for wedding stuff. Did you just want to do a call-out for the heck of it?

I guess I could have just flagged it, but I've never done a callout before.

As good a reason as any.

Bah! You people. I thought the stuff was hilarious! I'm getting married - I voiced softly over my shoulder, "Please shut up about your fucking wedding," and my bridezilla bamfed into existence right beside me.
"Oh, that. Yeah, I saw that a week ago - really funny stuff. I put it on my LJ."

In short, this is a fine post, they aren't just selling t-shirts, and I think you're just jealous because you aren't getting married.

Is it a double post? Did you call it out because it didn't meet your "funny" standards? Because I thought it was very funny. What wasn't funny was seeing MeTa getting all mucked up with your lame-o first post in the brown.

It raised a flag with me, that and its a lame FPP to a crappy CafePress site with boring cliches on shirts.

I am in no way affiliated with anyone at Cafe Press or whoever makes money off the sale of the merchandise.

I am getting married in July and stumbled across these Web sites in the course of my wedding planning.

Sorry if you don't think the links are funny but why are you calling me out on this?
posted by chicken nuglet at 3:19 PM on May 24, 2005

dunno if it was worthy of a callout, but I know I was suspicious.
posted by shmegegge at 3:37 PM on May 24, 2005

I understand your point absalom however I don't see the problem with the post. First, it seems very timely - not just for those getting married, but considering there are a billion shows on tv /right now/ dedicated to the whole wedding craze phenomenom. I think there's even a show called Bridezilla.

Anyway, it made me laugh. And it seems reasonable that chicken nuglet stumbled upon it while randomly looking around like she said.

It's certainly nothing near "the best of the web." It's not even marginally funny, and the attitude it expresses is kind opf pathetic. And it's a CafePress link. I can see why absolom found it suspicious.

Bamfed, Balrog? Asprin much?
posted by Wolfdog at 3:42 PM on May 24, 2005

Bamf. Like: "The angry masses gathered before the great gilt gates of Lord Ponburn's castle, demanding universal suffrage and free marzipan! The peasantry roiled like the sea all a'stormy. Before the regal guardsmen could even raise their pole-arms, *BAMF!* the great dark wizard, Lazerblargh appeared, spread wide his robed arms and cast open the gates with a fiery blast!"

bamf. v. to appear suddenly.

Asp[i]rin? What are you talking about wolfdog?
posted by Baby_Balrog at 3:55 PM on May 24, 2005

Didn't *BAMF* originate with the X-Men's Nightcrawler?

Because let's face, it, talking about the onomotopoeia of teleportation beats talking about yet another CafePress store.

I thought the post was hilarious, maybe not part of your best of web, but certainly part of mine.

Bridezilla indeed...

You know what I find worse than this call-out though? The derisive one-liners in the thread by people trying to see who could piss on the fpp the fastest.
posted by Stauf at 4:09 PM on May 24, 2005

Bamf is the sound of sudden materialization in a series of books by Robert Asprin, and it's the only place I'd seen it used 'til now. I didn't know it was common currency.
posted by Wolfdog at 4:17 PM on May 24, 2005

Er, I understand that you might not be amused by a particular link (different strokes for different folks, and all), but I am truly baffled by the speed with which people around here jump to the conclusion that something they aren't interested in simply must be a self-linking shill. Real self-linking shills are usually blatantly obvious. You don't like the link, ok, but you're making some pretty unfair assumptions about the poster.

Pretty sure "bamf" does come from X-Men's Nightcrawler.

There's only one thing to do. Hand chicken nuglet over to the authorities. You'll find her hiding in the attic.
posted by apocalypse miaow at 5:06 PM on May 24, 2005

Pretty tight race: Robert Asprin's first book was published in 1975. Nightcrawler first appeared in X-Men in 1975.

Inescapable conclusion: Robert Asprin is Nightcrawler.

I think the problem was that this post suggested that it might link to some gruesome-but-funny stories of tyrannical brides, or some rants about the same. But instead it's just a not-very-funny t-shirt. Who cares?
posted by argybarg at 5:56 PM on May 24, 2005

That thread is heading nowhere good. People are starting to share their wedding stories now.... OH THE HUMANITY.
posted by beth at 6:45 PM on May 24, 2005

I don't understand the reason to be so paranoid about that FPP when we all got sucked into a pretty obvious viral link yesterday ("Blogebrity") without so much as a callout to MeTa.
posted by clevershark at 6:48 PM on May 24, 2005

also, for everyone who's not sure why the thread got called out:

1. it's essentially contentless.
2. it contains 3 total links, 2 of which go to the same site, the 3rd of which goes to a cafepress store which either sells THEIR shirts or the shirts of a fan.
3. The text of the post doesn't explain what the significance of the links are in any fashion, and one is forced to visit the site and it's related store 3 times before finding out that the post is entirely about that one site.
4. The test of the post seems to be about brides in general, but the links are about one site.

None of this is conclusive, but if you think there's no reason for suspicion, that's probably because absalom made the unfortunate mistake of saying "I guess I could have just flagged it, but I've never done a callout before," in the thread.

TEXT of the post, the TEXT of the post seems to be about brides. grrrr. stupid eyes not catching spelling errors on preview... mumblegrumble.
posted by shmegegge at 7:54 PM on May 24, 2005

And here I flagged it because I'm so effing tired of having the f-bomb appear on the front page. So I come in here expect the fires of righteous damnation in re the same only to find out it's a self-link callout and/or Pepsi-Blue. Gosh I feel like an old man/prude.

OTOH, I've got a new verb to work into my daily vocabulary so it's not a total waste I guess.

I enjoyed the linked material. It's this call out that makes no sense. C'mon, people, you can have better flamewars than this.

It brought the username "chicken nuglet" to a wider audience so it can't all be bad.
posted by fire&wings at 7:50 AM on May 25, 2005

The post was really weird - first of all, it makes a generalization that the website itself is making fun of - that women get psycho with wedding planning. So I don't quite understand what the FPP is going for. Some people seem to take the link seriously. I think it could have been a great post, if there were more links included.

I'm planning a wedding right now, it's going swimmingly, and nope, not a Bridezilla.
