MeFiNYC: June 26 (Sunday), evening. Someplace with beer, hopefully not too far from Penn Station - but where? Help a girl out!

Is Manitoba's too far from Penn (for caitlinb)?

How about Manitoba's (Ave B between 5th & 6th) for a location? Cheap beer, great jukebox, a punk legend for bartender/owner, what could be bad?

Chances are I probably won't be there, but I'd be interested in hearing the exact time and agreed upon locale: just in case it's before or after and not too far from practice.

I don't live in NY anymore, so my input may not count, but you can't go too far wrong with Rudy's on 9th Ave. b/w 45th & 46th.

Cheap beer, free hotdogs (for the brave), and a great back patio area.

O.K., maybe if divey bars make you uncomfortable you can go wrong with it, but now that the yupsters have discovered it, it's a far cry from its TRULY dive-y days.

The last time we MetUp at Rudy's, we got egg thrown on us.

Egg? Really? How? Why? By whom?

Also, when?

Hallo Berlin has good German beer and works for larger groups.

I think it was one of the people in the apartments overlooking Rudy's courtyard (the egg-thrower, that is) and it was probably because they were illogically expecting peace and quiet despite having rented a place right over a fucking bar.

I could also be totally mis-remembering this :)

Anyway, despite airborne bird fetuses, Rudy's is okay, so I wouldn't mind that. I still thought that the other place we went that evening, the Mars Bar at Mars 2112, was actually pretty neat. Farther afield, I haven't been to Old Town in a while (18th near the middle of the island, I think B'way). Otherwise, I have no real (Midtown) suggestions, being a bar neophyte.

I remember ice was also being chucked by that drunk guy at Rudy's...he was trying to blame the egg crowd for that.

For a venue near Penn, I'd suggest Under The Volcano and/or The Ginger Man, as they're on the same block.

free hot dogs? holy shit> I HEART NY

Hey, ff, they have free hot dogs at Under the Eagle's Nest or whatever that place is, over by 3rd and Bryant. So you just let us know when you'll deign to grace us with your presence, and we will so hook you up.

I'm game for either of those places, Smart Dalek - who says MeFites can't enjoy a little class? How about you New Yorkers figure out where you want it to be (my issue is that I may not be getting off the train til about 7 PM), and I'll update the upcoming.org entry. Obviously there's no hurry, but I'll be traveling from June 24th, so any planning we do before that will help me.

I really didn't like that Rudy's place. It was hot and crowded and fratboy ridden. What's the matter with Manitoba's? It much more MeFi, you ask me? Maybe Divine Wino will even show up.

Under the Volcano and The Ginger Man are even owned by the same folks.

I'd vote for either of those but, it being a Sunday, and Sunday's being difficult, NAY IMPOSSIBLE! for me... I won't be there and have no real say in the matter. But, you know, I just wanted to be a part of it. In Old New York.

Oh, and jonmc, Rudy's can only truly be appreciated much much later at night when the fratboys have all gone and you're so drunk that the dogs taste good.

Me think jonmc listen too much WFMU. He take Caveman Rock waaay to seriously. Soon he start eating raw meat more than usual. Maybe hit things with club...

Seriously, Manitoba's is great, the jukebox is stellar, the beer is cheap, and we might get to hang out with Handsome Dick.

The best or worst bar in nyc (depending on who you ask) is right around the corner. BillyMark's West

The postal workers in the area love the place. Might be worth a try.

Crikey, I think I might actually be able to make that date. I like jonmc's suggestion. I like that area. And I like cheap beer and great jukeboxes. And punk legends.

I'm getting into town later today, hopefully I can make the meetup next week.

Uh, so, guys, can we make a decision?
posted by dame at 9:54 AM on June 17, 2005

Better do it quick, this thing is almost off the front page of MeTa!

Unfortunately I don't really have a preference, but someplace close to Penn Station would be good for me too, as that makes it much easier for me to get home afterwards.

OK, what'll it be: Under the Volcano? Or The Ginger Man? Or shall I just flip a coin, update the upcoming.org entry, and post a new thread when this one falls off the front page?
posted by caitlinb at 2:29 PM on June 17, 2005

Flip away, though Ginger Man's better for a large turnout.
posted by Smart Dalek at 2:12 AM on June 18, 2005

Upcoming.org "updated," though just in a comment. I'll post a reminder thread to the front of the grey in a few days. I should be there by 7 or 7:30.

Ginger Man
11 E. 36th St. (Midtown East/Murray Hill)
between Madison and Fifth Aves.
212-532-3740
Gruesome website with awful navigation. Over on the right there is a long column of ugly icons. "How to find us" gives address and maps.
