So, I'm going to be in NYC this Fri-Mon. Anyone want to meet me? (I will be staying in Manhattan and I am most familiar with places there.)

i'm going to be in NYC from this Tuesday through Monday, but i'll be hiding.

IT'LL BE A METROPOLIAN WHERE'S WALDO.

chances are i'll run into all of you, just because that's the way the world works.

(NYC Crew: I'm a-goin' to Georgia this weekend. Somehow the government is paying for my hotel room and rental car. This I do not understand, as I am merely going along for the ride. I assume there are no visiting dignitaries in Savannah this time of year, so I have no idea whom my travelling companions are being sent to assassinate.)

are you sure you haven't been Manchurianized or something? ; >

jon, is Manitoba's ac strong enough? I need somewhere arctic-ish.

I think it would be great if this time we went somewhere that was not on the lower east side. I'll note the names of some bars on the way home and post some suggestions.

Last time we were in midtown, bingo. and we've done midtown and the village a few times before.

we could do that little place by Bloomingdales--the Subway? like on 60th or 61st off lex?

all i care about is that it's really cool inside--the weather's not going to be breaking at all i hear.

jonmc: Fair enough. how about we do something north of 50th St.?
posted by bingo at 5:52 PM on July 18, 2005

That's a thought.

There's McAleer's and the Dublin House on the Upper West.

Hey, I would love to meet some other NYC MeFites some time. But this Friday and Saturday I am performing in a play. It's only $15 for tickets. If any of you guys would like to come see the show, it would be really fun to go out afterwords. The show is on 78th & Broadway: great neighborhoos with all kinds of bars and cool places to hang out. Really close to the red line.

If anyone is interested, there's info on the show ("Uncle Vanya") at www.foldingchairtheatre.org. I know this is a bit self-serving (not to mention self-linking), and if anyone is offended, please flag this response. But I really think it would be a fun way to meet you guys.

If we have to go above 50th, can it please at least be on the East Side? I mean, I hate the Upper East Side, but it's easier to get to. Actually can we just not go uptown, due to its overall suckiness and the lame bars? Please?

I'm pretty sure Amberglow refers to The Subway Inn. The best dive bar in the Upper East Side, and previously recommended by dame in an askme.

As for me, if it's on Sunday after 4pm I can't make it.

Vol De Nuit?
posted by cytherea at 9:55 AM on July 19, 2005

Well dame, the upper east side isn't easier to get to for everybody, and some of us who have gone to a lot of midtown and downtown meetups don't mind uptown so terribly much and in fact live there.

How about Dive Bar (Amsterdam & 95th), or Jake's Dilemna (Amsterdam & 80th), or the Westside Brewing Co. (Amsterdam and 76th)?

8 of Clubs is fun, and has a big kitschy backyard. (75th off B'way)

Yes.

Huh-huh-huh, huh-huh-huh...grumblebee's a thespian!

I'll back bingo up for Westside Brewing, but only because his first two choices have foozball tables, which are like, soooo dot-bomb era (sniffs with derison).

I'll also back jonmc up for Manitoba's, since it's a cool spot that hasn't been chosen before.

And I'll back up cytherea, as Vol de Nuit Vol De Nuit is another cool brewery.

Well, that's your shitty taste, isn't it? And the seventies or above is just absurd.
posted by dame at 7:56 PM on July 19, 2005

I mean, I don't demand everyone come to Bushwick--downtown and midtown are popular because they're fair. Honestly, there's no way in hell it takes you longer to get to midtown than people who live in Queens or Brooklyn.
posted by dame at 7:59 PM on July 19, 2005

I don't care WHERE you guys are planning to meet so much as WHEN. People, I have a social schedule to juggle here!
posted by CunningLinguist at 2:30 PM on July 20, 2005

I'm not demanding, I'm suggesting. And it doesn't take that long to get to my neighborhood from midtown. From Times Square, you can get to 72nd and Broadway in one express stop.

Tell you what...what if we meet at Vol De Nuit this time. At some point in the future, I will announce an 'Upper West Side Meetup,' and anyone who doesn't like the idea can just blow it off from the beginning. Ok?

But CL has a good point; let's agree on a day/time at least. Can we say Saturday night?
posted by bingo at 3:41 PM on July 20, 2005

Sunday would seem best, as even grumblebee might be able to make it.
posted by Smart Dalek at 3:48 PM on July 20, 2005

...or he, and anyone who had just been to see his show, could show up afterwards.

Of course, his show is on the upper west side.
posted by bingo at 4:04 PM on July 20, 2005

...just to throw in there that I for one am interested in seeing grumblebee's play...it doesn't have to be this weekend, and I'm not saying we should build the meetup around it, but if anyone else wants to arrange a time to go, that would be cool.
posted by bingo at 4:06 PM on July 20, 2005

fyi: the play is running this weekend and next thurs-sat. Then it's over.
posted by grumblebee at 4:16 PM on July 20, 2005

So, with no presumption that these are the best two options, but just to simplify things, here are two ideas:

Idea A) Meet at Vo De Nuit (downtown) on Sunday at 6pm; grumblebee can attend because his play is not on that day.

Idea B) Meet at Westside Brewing (UWS) at 8pm on Saturday, to be joined at 10pm by anyone who has just seen grumblebee's play, a few blocks away from the bar.

No, because in the future, people will still bitch and moan because the meetup isn't exactly when and where they want it to be.

I would prefer to meet somewhere that serves food, but that's just me. : )

I'm pretty sure all the major options being discussed have food...
posted by bingo at 10:18 AM on July 21, 2005

I'm obviously for option A.

And I don't see why you don't get people wanting things to be more central. You want to travel only five minutes to have other people bust out an hour trip? That's just dumb. Queens is an exception in the summer because they have a beer garden, but there's nothing special uptown but your fucking convenience. Selfish much?

C. The best or worst of both worlds?
posted by safetyfork at 10:54 AM on July 21, 2005

I can live with C, and it seems in accordance with what dame wants as well. Any objections to Saturday, circa 8pm, Von De Nuit? I plan to go to grumblebee's play and show up afterwards; anyone who wants to do the same and coordinate; say so or email me. Will those of you not going to the play still be at the bar at 9:30 or 10?

C. stands for Chances are I'll be there (but it's not a sure thing; my whiffle ball session in Prospect Park set for earlier saturday may result in injury or drunkeness, both of which could impair my ability to navigate back into the City).
