AirAmerica-mocking meetup July 18, 2005 4:14 PM   Subscribe

Air America is apparently broadcasting from the Tea Lounge in Park Slope (on Union) this Friday morning. I plan to be there with my Little Green Footballs.com t-shirt on to deride them, and stir up some....coffee. That's how you'll recognize me.

Okay. We just went through a similar issue with an AskMe question where a question asker's editorializing in the question rankled a bunch of people. I didn't want to edit or delete the post & the question was getting on-topic responses. I got a few emails saying maybe that's what should have happened, so it's fresh in my mind. There were a few flags on this post, so this seemed like an okay compromise and PP could have his meetup and not be unable to post for however many days. I tried to IM/email him to ask ahead of time w/ no luck. I'll do it differently next time. Cool?

In jessamyn's defense -- As an exercise, count up the MeTa posts about "NewsFilter" over the past couple of months. There've been a few recent threads arguing about NewsFiltery politics infesting the green. No consensus yet (quelle suprise) but, iirc, in the threads there was an agreement that an overtly political question -- such as the query about why Robert Novak isn't in leg-irons -- was allowable, assuming that the question was phrased, and responded to, as an inquiry into the details of relevant legal statutes, or the ankle capacity of leg-irons, or the otherworldly workings of true justice, or whatever. Some specific and supra-political question.

Contrariwise, PP's entire post was a partisan trotline. jessamyn did what I thought we'd agreed should be done -- cut the political spew not essential to the (ostensible and MeTa-appropriate) message.

How is this a problem? PP was posting a meet-up -- what crucial info has been lost?

Impose double standards much? And you ponder why people are pissed off about it?

That's just about as insane as being a school bully and then getting all surprised that all the picked-on kids rise up en masse and beat the everloving shit out of you, and then having the gall to start whining "Oh God, what did I ever do to you to deserve this?" about it.

I have to join this expression of frustration at the editing above. This was not a typo or a broken link.

I thought the rule here was "leave it as is" or "delete it entirely." I had the impression that editing other people's words (let alone doing so without visible evidence around the words themselves - is a tiny comment some ways down the page the right way to do this?) was totally incompatible with Matt's ideas of identity and accountability in a community.

To be most charitable, though: Why protect ParisParamus from the impact of his words? It's not like he slipped and that just accidentally came off his fingers. Either what he writes is OK (leave it alone), or it's not (delete it entirely, maybe even ban him).

PP at 11:54am and then again at 11:00am just elevated the debate. How inspiring -- he's restless.

MetaFilter: Jerks.

What? Oh, that's been used before? Damn.

Politics is tiresome. Let's talk psychology instead.

The following is from the Wikipedia entry on sociopathy / antisocial personality disorder:
Cooke and Michie eliminated criteria related to criminal incarceration and juvenile delinquency and statistically analyzed three factors of psychopathy.

Arrogant/Deceitful Interpersonal Style

* Glibness/superficial charm
* Egocentricity/Grandiose sense of self-worth
* Pathological lying
* Conning/Manipulative

Deficient Affective Style

* Lack of remorse or guilt
* Callous/Lack of empathy
* Shallow affect
* Failure to accept responsibility for own actions

Impulsive/Irresponsible Behavioral Style

* Need for stimulation/Proneness to boredom
* Parasitic lifestyle
* Lack of realistic, long-term goals
* Impulsivity
* Irresponsibility
The "Need for stimulation" part is interesting. If the sociopath doesn't get his or her intended rise out of people, would he or she find another venue in which to practice his or her "Arrogant/Deceitful Interpersonal Style"?

I don't know.

Anyone starting a pool on when the flameout is going to occur?

This meta diserves its own meta, btw -- maybe PP will create one.

While I understand Jessamyn wanting to tone down the partisan noise, I can't help but be uncomfortable with the editing of posts for content. Fixing a tag, repairing a typo or moving portions of a long post inside are one thing -- totally changing the editorial spin of a post is quite another.

As distasteful as I find PP's Bush fellating blather rhetoric, I can't help but think that he was done a disservice. If the post is good enough to stay at all, it should remain as it was written (with the exceptions stated above).

Jessamyn, I rarely disagree with your decisions but you dropped the ball on this one. It would probably have been better to delete the thing entirely and give PP a chance to rephrase. I figure this isn't a real meet-up announcement but rather a clever troll (clever because it worked, we're responding). Forcing him to rephrase it without the political crap would, at very least, provide some small evidence of his sincerity.

I think this thread has run its course. Paris, please don't make an ass of yourself like this in the future with a big fat MetaTalk troll like this thread.

Live and learn, and move on.
