Oddball subdomain wildcards August 3, 2005 11:38 PM   Subscribe

bukkake.metafilter.com - where Ask Yahoo! comes for links. (pun intended. gotta love subdomain wildcards)

I mean, they did link to a MetaFilter post about clapping to answer a question, but why to the bukkake subdomain?

What the hell crackpot method is Ask Yahoo! using to find answers to these questions. Truly, the mind boggles.

what is the sound of one hand fapping in a forest?

So we have a new "bukkake" section?

How come no one sent me the memo?

That's because you're the subject.

Ahem.

"And in other cultures, foot stomping is considered the appropriate response to a great performance."

In skateboarding you stomp your front trucks by pivoting them on the back trucks in appreciation of a gnarly grind or a well stomped transfer or what have you.

Seriously, why the hell are they linking there?

The phrase "subdomain wildcards" was a hint in the post.

'tis a joke/feature of long standing, but never before perpetuated by "the establishment", I don't think.

You can get the clap from bukkake?

Seriously, though, no matter how yahoo mines the web for these answers ... surely at some point there's a human editor involved, wtf.

If there's a real human editor in the chain, they must be having themselves quite a chuckle.

This implies that the kind of people who use Yahoo! to find things out either don't look at URLs when clicking on them or don't know what bukkake is. Maybe both.

Someone should send a letter to yahoo:

"To whom it may concern:

Recently, you posted a link to the website metafilter regarding the history of clapping in your "Ask Yahoo" section. The url you gave was http://bukkake.metafilter.com/mefi/23265 . This is an incorrect url. The correct one is: http://eat_shit_and_fucking_die_you_fucks.metafilter.com/mefi/23265

Thank you for making this correction."

BukkakeMetaFilter: I laughed. I cried. It was better than a hundred guys coming on my face. I'll do it again and again.

Tell them the real URL is http://google_rocks.metafilter.com

Well it's never been a secret. So all those who have been around & reading MetaTalk long enough would probably know. It's been brought up previously when an occasional weird subdomain shows up as a link in a google search of the site. (This happens when someone has linked to MeFi through some wild fake subdomain.)

At the moment, I can't find put my finger on the previous MeTa discussions of this, but I'm pretty sure Matt said he set it to resolve always to metafilter.com so that people that are behind simple filters that block metafilter.com can still get to the site.

I discovered domain wildcards recently, they're pretty nifty. Not every "DNS agent" supports them though -- Zoneedit does, but not freedns.

Agreed. I'd look for it but I'm too damn tired but a couple of years ago, someone posted to the blue with a Yahoo! Maps (or mapquest or whatever) map of some street with a filthy name (I saved the map and put it on my bulletin board at work so it had to have been gay-or-penis related). Someone human did that to make sure the map wasn't being copied wholesale for another site/service.

I'm sure a similar explanation applies to the answer to this question. That, or the human involved is someone I'd like to have some face time with.

loquacious, skater-boy? Mmmmmm, skater-boys.

Maybe there was a human involved… and (s)he did it on purpose?

Like that BBC link showing a fat kid at a McDonald's restaurant and if you hovered over the picture it said "Kids McFatty." (The only link I can find to said incident is on Fark and I'm not sure if that's allowed.)

Not saying this is the most likely scenario Occam's razor yada yada, but it is possible.

I want to know why anybody would quote "Metafilter" as an Authority about anything.

Maybe that shows I've been excluded from the Metahive?
