Just want to register my opposition to the new Public Shaming Initiative that requires deleted posts to remain on the front page with a weird bit of text beneath them.

My
AskMe from this morning was answered beautifully, with depth and consideration. As it is right now, at 20:07 EST, it is a beautiful little anthology on How to Read. I would shamelessly nominate it for the sidebar.

With Matt on vacation in Hawaii,
Josh cortex and jessamyn talk about SongSmith, Star Wars, whether or not anyone has actually read Wodehouse, and what the hell supermarkets are doing with bacon placement these days. This podcast was recorded Thursday, January 22nd, and runs just under an hour.

Within the past few months someone posted a link to either a graph or (an article containing a graph) that showed that GDP calculated within a few months of the time period in question bears no relation (no statistical correlation) to GDP calculated with more complete non-estimated data two years down the line. I would like to find this graph.

This is probably obvious, which is why I couldn't find it in the FAQ or the search. Why do people preface their questions with "[blank] filter:"? Does it help future searches and RSS filters?

You know what I love? The fact that Obama is now the president of the US. You know what I
don't love? The fact that he also appears to be the president of the front page of the blue.

My MetaFu is failing me. Where's the post (answer?) about the website that helps you turn your blog into a hard copy book. Did I dream it?

Any comics mefites going to the
NY Comic Con? Odds are that I'm going to be able to make it this year - should we set up a meeting or at the minimum some identification procedures so we'll know if we run into each other?

• An entry in 1001 Computer Words You Need to Know
• The Metafilter process, which is the subject of many patents, is based upon the filtration of the solution through a layer of very fine filtering material...
used for, among other things, making beer
• Metafilter: adventures in zero budget usability
• The use of Ask MeFi cited as a "Mind Performance Hack"
• Actor Wil Wheaton whining about feeling rejected
• Mention of the 2003 Laurie Garrett Affair from the book The Future of Reputation: Gossip, Rumor, and Privacy on the Internet
• An interview with the intrepid author of librarian.net
... just a few of the fascinating tidbits unearthed by
a Google Books search for the term "Metafilter".

Once someone asked a question that was inappropriate for some reason (chat filter?) and then everyone freaked out and started posting weird stuff. This was maybe a year ago. It never happened again, that I saw. It was sort of funny. But I don't know why/how/what happened.

What system decides what gets sidebarred? While most are fantastic, sometimes an entry doesn't seem so amazing.

I've been doggedly procrastinating on my actual tasks this morning. A big part of that procrastination has involved counting the obit filters on the blue for the past year.

Any MeFites want to get together on Tuesday the 20th in the SF bay area and celebrate the day together? Preferably near a media source? And beverages?

I'm looking for someone to partner with on a project, and I would like to post it to jobs. Is it kosher to post something to jobs that is not immediately compensated, but would be paid if success was achieved?

Hey everybody! MetaFilter is nominated for a
2008 Weblog Award for Best Online Community! The good news is this year FARK is not nominated (
2007,
2006) which means right now, we are only losing to a Flickr Group, My Opera and Jennifer Marohasy (who is apparently a one-person community of Climate Change Skeptic(s)). Less than 6000 votes total so far and there are over 80,000 of us. So let's go MetaFighters! Vote Early and Vote Often (once every 24 hours).

"Cute Girl" Filter: I know we've gone over this before, but I feel like there should be another discussion about making posts about female athletes WITHOUT appealing to "AND SHE'S HOTT" (or "SHE'S NOT JUST HOTT").

Incredibly minor design detail: Could the [add to favorites] button be switched with [!], so that [add to favorites] is adjacent to 'x people marked this as a favorite'? I'm always hitting the flag button when I want to favorite something because it's right next to favorites.

People from Britain are bad. Or maybe people from America are bad. I can't decide which is worse.
Some recent posts about US vs UK have me worried that the moderators will be in the same position as those trying to broker peace between Arabs and Israelis.
Wars have already been fought over this.

When you click on a "
favorited X times" link, you are taken to a page with the title "
All users marked nnnnn as favorite" (
example). Should it not say "
All users who marked nnnnnn as a favorite"? (The in-page text heading is "
X users marked this as a favorite:", FWIW)

Most of this podcast covers the Best Posts of December Contest as we determine our favorites and come up with a list of winners (results are inside), then follow it up with favorite posts from other sections of the site. Recorded on January 2, it's just under an hour long.

Yesterday I made
this post which was deleted. Apparently it was flagged numerous times as 'offensive'. After a few MeFi mails with Matt, he altered the reason, but didn't change the part I dispute.
