Of all the posts I've made, I've yet to figure out how to make posts that
don't start with a link, where the main link begins further into the post (

This answer is terrible, unsupported, and if the advice given were to be followed, would will lead to nothing but grief if someone were to follow it. It is sufficiently ill-informed and potentially disaster-inducing as to inspire me to request it be deleted rather then simply flagging it and moving on.

One-link FPPs: there's been a lot of bitching about these as opposed to multiple links. It happens a lot with breaking news, or an unusual site or article. Personally I don't think there's a problem with it per se: multiple link FPPs are not inherintly "better". As an example, come this Friday White House indictments will (likely) rain down, how would the naysayers begin a discussion thread about that?

I'm sure this must've been suggested, but I've read a lot of the Newsfilter Debate threads, and I can't recall specifically seeing this. If and when someone has a Newsfilter link, could the prefix
"Newsfilter:" be a cue for a killfile that would block such posts from appearing on the front page for those who wished to avoid same? I for one find threads like Miers' withdrawal (even with only
a one-sentence link) both appropriate and inevitable here, but I can see how others would not. If such a killfile existed and posters played nice, could this be settled once and for all?

During my sophomore year in college, my classmates apparently all simultaneously discovered the word "ambiguous." We couldn't go through five minutes of a class discussion without the word being used. It was like, "I'm smart! Look at my new word! Watch me use it in any mildly appropriate way!"
I can't get ten comments through a thread here without someone cleverly pointing out a "straw man" argument. Not every argument that is contrary to your own is a "straw man" argument. An unsupported argument is not a "staw man" argument. If you disagree with someone's point, then take the time to attack the logic or the premise of that argument. Don't just call that person a "straw man." It's too ambiguous.

Toronto MeFites, let us convene and imbibe. I propose 8 p.m.-ish on the night of November 11 for the time, and the Bishop & Belcher (on Queen West between John & Peter) as the venue, but feel free to reject my arbitrarily selected time and/or venue and appoint your own through some messy and quarrelsome yet democratic process. Time and place are trivial matters compared to the real issue at stake, namely: will Dobbs appear or will he do his
usual tease & withhold?

What's the etiquette on posting stuff you've just seen at somewhere like
BoingBoing? So far this morning, there's been 2 posts that appeared on BB in the last week. I saw them when they first came up there, and thought, "hey, this is neat, people on Mefi would like this," but then decided against posting them here. I know that sometimes one can encounter a flurry of "
Xfilter!!!!" comments by doing something like that.
Should we actively avoid posting things we've seen on other, highly popular link-oriented blogs?

AnonAskMe often poses embarrassing personal questions. Sometimes I withhold my opinion because, if you're too mousy to attach your name to your question, I don't think you deserve people's signed replies. Does anyone else agree?

Last week's fundraiser became a sad debacle, and there's certainly no point retreading that ground. But I really like the idea of MeFites raising money for charity, and I think it's fun to make it a competition. I came up with an idea for a new, and hopefully friendlier and less divisive, contest for charity. I'd like to hear what you folks think. [more inside]

A "sort by my comments" thingy on Ask Metafilter would make it easier to monitor threads that one is interested in. There is the potential for abuse, but since the time-limit on questions there has recently been extended, I don't think it would be all that dangerous.

Are people interested in reviving this? I would be willing to do the administration aspect. I would NOT be able to start it until about 3 weeks, as I will be traveling and dealing with school related stuff. Undoubtedly my site style/options will not be as slick as Dream's setup, but I see no reason why it would not work.
This post is just to inquire how much interest there is.

Not sure if this has been suggested before (searching on MeTa currently isn't working), but I'll suggest now that FPPs go through a little post-processing to add a
coral cache link to all outbound links in the FPP. It might make sense to have this be an option the post author can click on/off (CNN doesn't need to be protected from traffic, some dude with a Geocities page does).
Something equivalent to this could be handled on the client side, using some Javascript or a Greasemonkey extension, I suppose, but handling on the server side would be more universal.

For some reason in my

26.87 miles from
darksquirrel. Yet
darksquirrel is
29.78 miles from

Call this Feature Requests/Etiquette: I'd like, upon flagging a comment (in this case, Carbolic's accidental doubling), to be returned to the #name from whence I came, rather than the head of the thread to scroll down.
Further
this thread has been magnificent, at least to the extent that I've gotten, in both well-reasoned argumentation and a lack of calling each other douchebags. I'd like to point out that both Rothko and Dios have been excellent at engaging each other in a way that, while highlighting their disagreement, is about the facts and arguments that each is presenting. Good show you guys. This is why I joined Metafilter.

My second of two comments made in this thread http://ask.metafilter.com/mefi/25241 was removed apparently because I disagreed with someone who was complaining that the tangents related to the discussion were not germane to it (http://ask.metafilter.com/mefi/25241#399539).
Of course, since I'm posting this, I disagree with the removal. If this is standard way, we are limiting the involvement of human opinion in Ask MeFi, and end up with nothing more than regurgitation of facts that could probably be gained much better elsewhere on the internet.
Could the person who moderated this clarify the removal?

There comes a time when you need to step away from your keyboards, folks. Take a few minutes outside, maybe find a tree to sit under and do some breathing exercises.
I've never done a "call-out" on anyone in the year (well, not quite) that I've been here, but this really bothers me. People are suffering and you are arguing. You know what they say about not being part of the solution, folks. Again, this is NOT just eriko. You know who you are. I've never wanted to leave the site before today.
