October 2007 Archives (all archives)
This is a two parter. One: there's a disparity in behavior between the search box on the bottom and top of Ask. Two, why isn't 'recent activity' set to nofollow like profile pages? [more inside]

AskMe is quickly turning into my favorite food resource of all time. It's a vast treasure trove of practical, easy to make recipes and good food-related advice shared by regular folks, not food writers or even, necessarily, hardcore foodies. Can we have a thread consolidating the favorite/most useful recipes and advice AskMe has produced? [more inside]

MetaMail question: Would it be possible to allow users to MetaMail posters of anonymous AskMe questions without revealing the identity of the poster (and possibly the sender)? [more inside]

A good post to MetaFilter is something that meets the following criteria: most people haven't seen it before, there is something interesting about the content on the page, and it might warrant discussion from others. What? [more inside]

, author of Indexed
, the Venn Diagrams-on-cards blog, on how she went from unknown blog to bookdeal in just a few months: "About a week after I posted the first batch last August, somebody linked the blog to Metafilter. Whoever you are, thank you! That's how my agent (it's still strange to me that I have an honest-to-god agent) found me, and from there, it just sort of took off.

I'm an avid reader of Puke & Cry's Deleted Thread
blog, and it got me wondering: Do any of the admins have stats on the most posts deleted in one day? Or, the most doubles (i.e. the most posts on one
topic that were deleted - I'm guessing it must be an obituary post, maybe James Brown)? Or, the longest time span without a deletion? Etc.

Can we add a feature in the Past Meetups page that also links to the follow-up on meetups (e.g. the threads that contain pictures and how a good time was had by all)?

Please forgive me if this is a stupid question, but how does one "view tags" for a FPP? (I tried searching for "viewing tags" or just "tags" but the amount of entries returned overwhelmed by googlefu) I know I can view popular tags, but is there a preference where you can see tags (such as near the flag/favorite entries)?

I'd much like a diminutive horse, please. An option in "Recent Activity" to view "all activity," that combines "my posts" and "my comments" on one handy page. [more inside]

: It's obvious from the comments that almost no one read the linked sites. It's obvious that the mod that deleted my post didn't either. I didn't express an opinion within the post, but tried to objectively cite various viewpoints and facts. It was essentially a response to what is currently being reported on the major news outlets, pointing to several sites in connection to what is being reported in those broadcasts. I honestly have no opinion as to the cause of the fires, nor do I have any opinion regarding 'eco-terrorism', nor even on what George Carlin said. These ideas are being discussed on all news outlets. I really hate this
. But since I don't want to do the same thing, I need to explain what "this" is. "This" is writing a whole post on the front page without ever saying what the post is actually about. Teaser posts are teh suck.

I'm getting this error [see more inside for error] every morning when I log into any Mefi site. I can delete any cookies related to MetaFilter and get in ok but I thought that I would only have to do it one time. It seems I have to do this every day. Is this something that anyone else had reported?

Why is it that i keep losing my settings for in-line youtube? It seems like whenever i change my change anything in my profile, it works, and then a few days later, the embedded youtube links are gone again. Is this a known bug or what?

This post was deleted for the following reason: this is an axegrindy HC post. I know it's election time and all, but it's too early for "your favorite candidate sucks" posts and if you have issues with the way other political posts have been handled, it would be better to take those to Metatalk or your own blog. -- jessamyn [more inside]

Is the header on the blue looking strange to anyone else? On mine, the "New Post," "My Profile," "Preferences," "Recent Activity" and "Favorites" links are all smooshed together underneath the search box (not the tabbed links, just the text links). I'm viewing the site in IE, WinXP, and I just noticed the smooshed links within the last hour.

Now that some ex-Texans are settled and some other OK Mefites are wanting to meet, it looks like November 10th would be a good time for a meetup here in the city. This invitation goes out to any one willing to drive in for the night - (looking at you ufez

"...I think we've pretty much worn out the Republican Gay Sex Sting news thing." - cortex
I disagree, but oh well. It did seem to have some interesting conversation going on. I just kinda think that if we allow newsfilter posts at all then we're always going to have this sort of thing.

As alluded to here
, I would like to formally propose a meet up at the Eastlake Zoo
. It's a dive bar, true, and a relict from a bygone epoch but there are few such places left hereabouts and none as venerable. I'm thinking somewhere between Thursday October the 25th to Sunday October the 28th at 7:00 to 8:00 PM in the evening, depending upon who's doing what all where else when. I lean towards any of those days, myself.
Of course, the total guts move would be to show up for their Halloween party. Just sayin'... [more inside]

I've noticed a weird variation on the I-don't-know-the-answer-but-here's-a-wild-guess syndrome on AskMe: in "help me translate this" questions, people who quite clearly don't speak the target language still offer their awkward, ungrammatical or just-plain-wrong translations. [more inside]

I've just joined MeFi as a new member, specifically for the purpose of asking a question on AskMeFi. Usually, I do this from work, and until a few days ago, I could reach AMF without a problem from work. Now, I can reach all parts of MeFi except
AMF from my office. Is there some issue going on? I'm not getting the usual 'forbidden' error, I'm getting 'gateway not available', which indicates the site is not reachable. The hostname resolves, and I'm getting good ping times from it. Suggestions?

Cortex, I'm protesting your deletion of PSmealey's Killing Joke FPP

The great AskMe folllowup roundup
-- sort of a pony, sort of a good idea. People, if you have posted an AskMe in the last year or so (meaning it is still live) and you found the answers helpful, and something happened as a result of the AskMe, many people are curious to know what the end result is. Going back, marking best answers if you haven't done so, and telling us what the heck ended up happening would all be much appreciated. [more inside]

The podium of the MeFi September running challenge is as follows : sequential (257k), caution live frogs (184k) and middleclasstool (156k). Sequential apparently could not choose between running and walking, in the walking challenge getting the best of shinypenny/longdaysjourney (242k) and fluffy battle kitten (51k).
