I know this is an incredible longshot, and I'm putting up my snark shield already, but is there any support for having a NewsFilter subsite? People who hate newsfilter FPPs could totally avoid them, and people like me would know what the hell's going on outside without ever having to leave the site.

The Whistler trip is now two weeks away. In case anyone is still on the fence about coming,
check out the wiki for pics of the latest conditions, and for a link to some great deals on lift tickets and accomodations. Scroll down for a little taste of what's in store.

We've finally finished a several month long project today by reworking the back end of Metafilter to bring site security practices up to date. The new login system
we were testing yesterday is now live for everyone. And you can even change your password now, after 8 years of everyone asking!

It's nice that we have popular favorites for ask.me for the last
7 days and the last
thirty days, but can we get all time favorites as well? (also links to the 7 days and 30 days on the popular questions page.)

ND¢, generally I really like you, but it's clear that you are
being a dick for the sake of being a dick, notwithstanding your attempts at justifying that as your real and valid opinion. All you had to say was "yeah, maybe my joke was a little offside" and no one here would have busted your balls over it. Just be a decent human being with a little respect and understanding and things don't have to turn into a shitpile.

Very short question. Why does it say 'X
new links' when most posts here don't have links? Shouldn't it say 'X new posts or X new flameouts/hugesexismthreads/podcasts'?

Podcast call-in! For the next 48 hours, call +1 (503) 487-0014 to leave a message for this week's podcast (try to keep it to less than a minute long). We'll pick 5-10 of the best ones, play them on the show and answer any questions.

I think everyone's read the "note" about relevance and respect at the bottom of the posting window in the blue. But it seems that very few people actually take that message to heart.

Travel doesn't seem to get much traffic. The post yesterday was the first in almost a month. Can we get a link to it at the top, along with the links to the other subsites?

I've often heard/read the anecdotes that "Only the die-hard Mefites look at MeTa" and "Most of the AskMe regulars don't venture into MeFi." Is this validated by actual user data and/or site hits? (I don't know if that's the right terminology to use). When I first came across Metafilter (2-3 years before I actually became a member) I immediately clicked on the other links at the top (AskMe and MetaTalk were the ones I remember being there when I first found the site). Do some users really only stick with one subsite or is that just a myth?

As part of my final paper for a grad class, I wanted to ask the hivemind a few questions. It's just 20 quick questions about MetaFilter and AskMetaFilter, since those are the two most active parts of this community. I had to break it up into two parts since I'm a poor grad student and don't want to drop $20 for one survey:
Part One
Part Two
It's also limited to the first 100 responses, but if even get close to 100 responses I'll be extremely happy. Thanks in advance!

Tis the season...to shop Mefi? In this
post, MadamJuJuJive posits an idea for us to have a Shop Mefi page for the holidays. I like the idea a lot, and not just because she pimped out my soap company. I would love to buy some of the art, music, photography and other goodies that fellow Mefites are making. So, how hard would it be to make a MeFi Mall?

Pony request: For years, Thinkblank ran their great Secret Santa, where people would put in their wish list of <$20 gifts from a website and then a computer would randomly couple participants together and they would accordingly send gifts but wouldn't know who the giver was until six months later. But, sadly, Thinkblank is defunct.
Possible to do a secret santa on Metafilter?

I'm kinda bumed
this post on the 'Very Short Introductions' series was deleted, but understand why. Any suggestions how to get the book series in the blue, besides pushing illegal copies? The FPP had 4 favorites in its brief life and had some useful discussion starting about the best books in the series.

Recently, as in the past day or so, the flag for
"offensive" was changed to "offensive/sexism/racism". This was done at the request of several female members who believe Metafilter has become or has been hostile to women and who wished to have some means of highlighting these instances. Several other changes are being considered, such as an addition to the FAQ/guidelines, although nothing concrete has been hammered out. If you would like to add suggestions or have constructive criticism, please do so in this thread.
If you you would like to read the full story of how this came to be,
check out this previous Metatalk thread. It's a bit long, but worth reading for a full understanding of how this issue came about.

MeFi Mail Pony Request -- I often miss that I have new messages because the icon's so goshed darned tiny and doesn't call attention to itself in any way. Since I *rarely* get MeFiMails (no one likes me), can we get something like, say, a blink tag or a .wav that says "You've got Mail!" or something up there when we have new mail?

It think it's been asked before, but I'm asking again: may we please have a mechanism for dropping a thread from our
recent activity page? One comment, and you can be stuck with a thread for-seemingly-ever. And the longest-lived are often the ones you least want hanging around.

I think it'd be cool if when posting as anonymous on AskMe, you had the option to provide a separate password which would let you log in as anonymous
just for the thread you're creating and post comments. The main benefit is that it would allow responders to ask for more information. The main risk I see is that someone could out themselves by accident if they forgot to log in as anonymous before commenting...

I really like the last 7 days highly favourited list - I get to see things I would have otherwise missed. Is there some way I can see the most favourited posts of

Seeing
this recent MeTa thread at 378 comments made me wonder what the longest pan-MetaFilter thread was. I came up with
this from August 24, 2001 at a whopping 1729 comments (apparently some kind of
record), but they're context-less (for me, at least) because the link to the "metafilter parody" that the post refers to is gone.
Can anyone slake my thirst for MetaFilter history and supply the parody that inspired such prolific commenting?

Can we have Markdown? It's so neat. I subconsciously compose everything in it and it's now a slight pain writing actual HTML tags. For instance, you can do a quote by starting the first line of a paragraph "> " instead of having to wrap it in blockquote/close blockquote tags. It's way easier to do useful things.

A post about how women experience street harassment has been deleted. The one about how the psychology of exhibitionist men remains. The grounds:
This post was deleted for the following reason: one exhibitionism post per day is enough. This is linked in the thread just below this. Please don't use MetaFilter to forward your point from metatalk. -- jessamyn
My point was to continue a discussion some people thought valuable from a previous thread deleted apparently because that post was poor.

Jimbob said "
Yeah, keep this thread running. May it serve as an example to all the American politics nuts who insist on starting a new post every time Hillary takes a shit." And so that's just what we did. In an example of how I think Metafilter can do politics well, the
Australian Politics thread, which started on October 14 (the date the election was called, which is
not the first day of the campaign), ran for 30 days straight and (at time of writing) had amassed almost 600 comments. But as is the norm for an FPP after 30 days on the Blue, it's about to be closed so discussion has moved over to
Thread #2, by wilful, to get us through to election day. An index of the first thread is inside, as well as kudos for those involved (because I think they deserve it).

A couple of times this week I've run across links that had significant new information on stories that made the Blue recently enough to still be active. By themselves they don't feel meaty enough to merit a new FPP, but if I just tack them at the end of the old FPP it feels like wasted effort that nobody's likely to see.

There was a list in the last few weeks of a bunch of weird places to get christmas gifts. One was the american science supply and the author commented that a similar list was put up last year. Searching metafilter and ask metafilter has proven fruitless. Can someone get me back to the post? thanks.

We've already had several, and we don't need any more links to
Keith Olbermann ranting. By now we're all well aware of Keith Olbermann and his editorial opinions, and links to his most recent outraged rant don't belong on MetaFilter just like editorial rants by Ann Coulter, Bill O'Reilly, or Andy Rooney don't belong here.

I'm wondering now, if it's worth the effort (or possible) to include the "Bold", "Italics" and "links" buttons to MeFiMail and much more importantly, to AskMe.

A quick formatting request for the contacts lists: "links to" and "linked by" as vertical lists side by side rather than as blocks of inline text. Also, a little icon to indicate mutual contacts, and a little plus sign to add new non-mutual contacts from the "linked by" list. I have the del.icio.us contacts list in mind.
