Polite request: if you post an AskMe question about a city - where to find so and so in so and so [city], tag it with the [city]. Thanks!
I promise that I Googled and searched with the on-site engine, but I just can't find things I know for sure are there - namely, AskMe questions about getting young adult children to gain independence. [more inside]
I'm going to an IRL meetup later today, and as an extrovert I love meeting new people, adding them to my friends list on FB, and inviting them to fun things. However, I like to maintain boundaries between my online and offline personas, and my privacy will take precedence over establishing new friendships in 99% of all situations. [more inside]
Is there a good way to have volunteer Mefites critique my grad school personal statement without asking an AskMe? [more inside]
Grease my monkey, guvnor: Greasemonkey scripts get talked about a lot in Metatalk comments, and they seem pretty useful. I would like to ask our more Greasemonkey-oriented friends to recommend the best ones and discuss their experience of installing and using them. [more inside]
Pony Request: Stop the Youtube inline player from re-centering itself on a scaled up page on an ipad. The Close link is unavailable when the player is scaled up, and won't work. [more inside]
I love Ask and I embrace the legitimate need for anonymity, but I seem to be noticing an increasing number of questions where the asker is abusing Ask by hiding behind anonymity while expecting forthright and revealing answers from other members. [more inside]
How about an FPP mentoring/buddy system? [more inside]
We recently had a August Awesome Post contest. Is there any thought about doing a December one again, as in years past? December is a great time of year, and this contest has often been the icing on the cake! [more inside]
It might be time to consider how obituaries are posted on the Blue. [more inside]
Hello all you Santas out there! Time once again for our (4th!) annual holiday gift drive for children. Step inside to see how you can help out. [more inside]
With US Thanksgiving rapidly approaching, it's time for another MetaFilter holiday tradition: The MetaTalk Queue. [more inside]
Was thinking it could be cool to have the title of posts available as hover text when you hover over the "more inside" or "X comments" links. [more inside]
I'd like to make a Holiday Request. [more inside]
What's the deal with "limerence"? [more inside]
In ancient times, our forebearers celebrated the coming of Northern Hemisphere winter with a Cookie Swap. Join the fun! [more inside]
It's been eight years since hell frozenth over! Happy five dollar newb day everyone!
Dear The Internet: We have enough cat videos thank you. [more inside]
Now that activity in it has ceased, can someone go through the Best Movie Channel thread and work out which movies are MeFi's favourites? [more inside]
Whether we use them as bookmarks or +1s, many/most of us have multiple things marked as favo(u)rite. But let's get real here for a second: if you really had to name one favo(u)rite post and/or one favo(u)rite comment -- right now, that's it, that's all you get -- what would it be?
An interesting and entertaining interview of MetaFilter user #1 by Colin Marshall. It's a free podcast, an hour in length.
Just wondering why this post was deleted. The text of the FPP was simply a copy/paste of the article posted. [more inside]
After five years the MeFi Mall is going self-service. Sort of. It's that time of year when people who like that sort of thing can buy/sell stuff to/from other people who like that sort of thing. Last year we had over seventy participants. Interested in being involved in this year's Shops by MeFites? Read on... [more inside]
Which has more deleted reposts -- Guy Fieri or the US election? [more inside]
Support for 99% Invisible is provided by Ask Metafilter. [more inside]
It shall be brought to MetaTalk's attention that This Thread Is Best Thread.
In light of this post, I would like for the extraordinary Hummus Makers of Metafilter to share their Hummus Recipes, please!!
My world would be complete if, after navigating up and down through posts using j and k, I could then navigate left and right through the links in the selected post using h and l.
Hey there! No big thing, but it's time for a general reminder post about what's okay and what's not with sockpuppets, alternate accounts, Brand New Days, and other multiple-accounts-related stuff on Metafilter. [more inside]
Now that Florida has finished counting votes (always a challenge for us), the 2012 presidential election results are 332 electoral votes for Obama and 206 for Romney -- barring faithless electors. The popular vote is 50.6% Obama, 47.9% Romney and 1.5% other. The Nate Silver Medal for Political Prognostication goes to JKevinKing. J. Kevin was one of 15 people to tie for first in the electoral half of the contest with a perfect prediction. He finished third in the popular vote half, ahead of I am the Walrus and UrineSoakedRube who tied for ninth. The $50 Threadless gift certificate and life-size cardboard Joe Biden are on the way to JKevinKing as soon as I send them. Please keep Joe in the lifestyle to which he has become accustomed. Update on MeFi It Gets Better Project! Deadline approaching: December 1! [more inside]
It's secret quonsar time again! The randomized draw will be on American Thanksgiving, November 22, and the send by date is Monday, December 3. Please sign up by 11:59 PM EST on Tuesday, November 20. The spending guideline: $10-20. [more inside]
So I posted this post about drawing cartoons about bars in Brooklyn and the cartoonist showed up. Welcome to Metafilter, Bill Roundy.
Video about breaking apart a piano and making a new instrument? [more inside]
Ten years ago today adrianhon, MetaFilter Wiki's generous host, announced the creation of MeFi Wiki. It's been a valuable addition to the community since its birth. Thanks Adrian!
Hello! I'm trying to find an old post about vanity URLs. It linked to a cool site where you could type in a domain idea and it would carve it up in fun ways using strange domains. So for 'johnsmith' it would offer not only johnsmith.com but also john.smi.th and other options...
My brain free-associates all over the place when I'm trying to fall asleep. The other night during that time, a question popped into my head: the mods are all relatively within the same age range. Matt, decades from now, when you're tired of running the show, will you hand it down to "Mefi: the Next Generation"? Or close up shop?
I'd like to suggest that Chat be a permanent addition to Metafilter. [more inside]
Instagram Web Profiles [more inside]
Ajax updates that allow us to see new comments without reloading an entire page have been a wonderful addition to this site. Any chance we could get Ajax posting as well? This would be really helpful in long threads which can crash my browser after I post a comment.
So does this mean that the next Great MetaFilter Enspousening will be an IRL mass-wedding held in Braintree, Vermont?
I want to thank the mods for their stewardship of the site during this U.S. election season. [more inside]
Thanks AskMe! Over a year ago I asked for some help with some technology to help my students use their cameras. [more inside]
Actual quote and source of (paraphrased): "World round, scientists say; others disagree"? [more inside]
A Proposal: Thank Metafilter - A place to say thank you long after the fact for people helping you in Ask Metafilter. [more inside]
Thanks to pb for the Ajax updates on threads. Otherwise I suspect that the election thread would break Metafilter tonight with reloading. I've already seen a JRun error or two.
New month, new podcast, this time we interview LobsterMitten on her new role as mod, then go into our favorites from the month. It runs pretty long, around 1hr 45min. [more inside]
So, I made a post last week and now the main link (the only one above the "more inside") is broken. It's a youtube video that was apparently removed by the copyright holder. What is normally done in these situations? Do y'all summarily delete? Ignore? Is it at all possible (or even worth it) to re-work the post? [more inside]
The pundits and psychics have already weighed in. Now it's your turn in MetaFilter's (mostly) quadrennial presidential prediction contest. The winner will receive a $50 Threadless gift certificate and a life-size cardboard Joe Biden. To enter, predict the percentage of the vote that President Obama, Mitt Romney and Everybody Else will receive and the number of electoral votes that Obama, Romney and Everybody Else will receive. Entries must be submitted before Dixville Notch, N.H., reports its vote early Tuesday morning. [more inside]
secret quonsar swap time is fast approaching! Last year, we had hundreds of participants from locations around the world. It was fun. But before we can get to swapping this year, we have a few preliminary things to resolve. Fa la la la la. La. [more inside]
What's the plan for US Election Day? Is there going to be one thread continuously updated with the election results or a bunch of them. Conversely, will there be no talk of the 2012 election at all? Do the mods have the day off and will the site be inactive?
Does anyone remember a post on the Blue, or the Green, or maybe it was here on the Gray, about differences in cover stories published in North America and international editions of news magazines? [more inside]
I subscribe to AskMe via Google Reader, and the bottom of each post provides a link to the post. The link reads "X comments on this item," where X is always 1 more than the actual number of comments. Not a huge deal, but something I wonder about ever so often. Bug? Ghosts of comments past? [more inside]
Weekend NPR All Things Considered host Guy Raz gets Prisencolinensiainciuol artist on the horn. [more inside]
Feature request: opt-in email or MeMail when a meetup in your city is proposed. [more inside]
Interesting linked site might also be scammy? What do we do? [more inside]
My comment in the Catcher-in-The-Rye thread is showing up with an earlier time stamp than comments ahead of it. I can read everything fine, just wondering if it's A Daylights Savings Time thing or if I/the mods should be concerned.
My Google-fu is failing me: someone posted a comment a while back, probably on the Blue, ranting against the privileged idiocy of "minimalism"/"simplifying your life". It brought up the privileged idiot's Macbook Pro several times, and how they'd like everything in life to be more like it, not realizing that their smooth-lined aluminum shit costs money and most people don't have that. If anyone remembers the comment, I'd greatly appreciate a link!
Same account, two different browsers - my Theme preference isn't respected in both browsers. I like this "feature," so I'm just mentioning it - not requesting a change. [more inside]
Ready for another awesome MeFi Music collaboration? November's Music Challenge is to create a MeFi version of Tubular Bells. Please drop by and overdub something, and make sure to announce your instrument in true Tubular Style.
