The other day I posted a sentence including the Greek letter pi. This appeared as the Greek letter on preview but came out as a couple of question marks in the actual post. Today a post by languagehat included some Kanji characters and a bit later in the thread he says, darn it,
...those characters looked fine on preview. Can someone explain the difference between preview and live posting when it comes to special characters? Thanks!

So SpaceCadet says that he wants to talk about
marriage, then posts a completely worthless link that is nothing but anti-women bullshit. It features, among other things, defense of abusive husbands, the categorization of raped women as "unmarriageable," and the general claim about "how inferior they are to men in every way. Would this sort of thing be tolerated even as well as this has if this were about any other group?

Colored usernames. How about a per-user defined option to have usernames show up in custom colors to keep track of users I want to read (red) and users I don't (gray) and everyone else (default). Or some other way to highlight when a user I really like posts without having to memorize lots of names.

I have mixed feelings about hoopyfrood's
Michael Jackson belongs in jail post. On the one hand, I agree with the general "don't editorialize" philosophy and its corollary "save it for a comment in the thread." On the other, this isn't exactly the New York Times and a poster's take on their subject is arguably an integral part of the post. "Letting the link speak for itself", when it involves a news item, is all very well - but perhaps keeping one's opinion out of the front page text is also an exercise in obfuscation and even dishonesty. Has current policy on editorializing changed? (
I speak as a frequent editorializer, I should add. Even though I agree "pedophile of pop", with its dubious inverted commas, and all-capitals IN JAIL!, as well as the idea that everyone is innocent until proven guilty except Michael Jackson, are way too extreme a way of going about it.)

Amidst all the talk about grudges and nemesii; stalking and vendettas; personal beefs and antipathies, the fact remains that, when you've been on MetaFilter for a while, the chances are that you've also made a few friends - or, at least, established some pleasant, lasting empathetic online relationships. Are they - or can they be - considered friendships? Or are they better considered fleeting and virtual, ready to evaporate at the first hastily answered (or unanswered) e-mail, not worth the paper they weren't written on in the first place?

So I can't be the only person consistently hitting preview and correcting all my UBB to HTML. It doesn't seem like it would be too hard to automagically correct the standardest of standard UBB ([b] [i] [u] are pretty much the only ones I ever use) codes to HTML. So, I'm requesting it as a feature.

Lockdown: Year one. This comes up every so often, but today is the one year date since Mefi closed its doors to newcomers so perhaps its a good date for a thread on the policy and its continuance. What have been the effects? What will be the long term impacts of continuing the policy?
Also, as one of the late entrants, how come I still don't know why my user number if bigger than the total number of users and how do I do little writing in posts? And why isn't 'Mefi' in the spellchecker?

Advice on re-posting MeFi to blog?
I often repost mefi stuff on my blog, often meaning Several times a week, sometimes multiple times a Day. I have an html template I use but I do keep changing the format a little. The topmost thread on metatalk has tons of white(gray) space between the description and the comments/timestamp line. The space seems to coincide with the sidebar. Only when I'm not logged in, using Mozilla Firebird .6 through .7.

not news. Not only that, but the new news of this old story (which was covered in many a place) is that the patent was considered invalid:

Why is
this on the front page? For those too lazy to click, "this" is a post that consists of a link to the latest Thomas Friedman column, and a statement that's basically "I agree with what Tom said." One link. No questions.
I went and reread "what makes a good post" and, I noticed, there's nothing about this scenario. If you want to post something with next to no content, that's Newsfilter, and that doesn't seem to be asking any questions to the community, and that only has one link--go ahead. I think there should be some kind of guideline, since this happens at least 2 times a day (or at least, that's my made up statistic and I'm sticking to it). I mean, this seems way more content-less than the fried chicken thread from yesterday.
