AskMeFi followup - nearly 4 months ago, I asked
this question about home theater searching. Ultimately, the guidance from that thread led me to save up for and purchase an appropriate unit. Once I got the DVD player to output the right Dolby variant, we've been basking in good sound. Thanks,

Hi, I've been following metafilter since 2000-2001 but just recently registered an account. One feature I notice is the "new comments" count. This count rarely seems to coincide with what I actually have and have not read. What criteria does the system use to determine the appropriate "new" comment amount?

Link to a map on user page? As long as you have the coordinates, creating a link consisting of "http://maps.google.com/?q=lat%20long" would be trivial. Pardon me if this has been suggested already, but I scanned the threads on the lat/long feature and didn't see it.

Occasionally, I am reminded why I shouldn't
read the comments here.
I guess I'm soft-hearted or something, but I thought that yankeefog's link was a pretty good one: inspiring, heart-warming, maybe a little fluffy, but it's the holidays. So, after I read the article, I clicked back to the comments and the first half dozen replies are people whining about having to register to read it. Particularly annoying is thirteenkiller's
one word dismissal. I'm sure a lot of thought went into that. I mean, what purpose does that kind of post serve other than to make yourself look like a complete dick? Seriously, you have time to dress up your user page with
ironic hideously stupid rainbow shit, but you don't have time to swipe a password from bugmenot? Yeesh.

PollFilter? Not to turn AskMe into a run-of-the-mill forum, but polls, either as a component of AskMe or as a separate "tab" (like Projects, MeTa), would be a neat way of getting the community consensus on straightforward questions.

Why does font size change after login?
When I come directly to www.metafilter.com (front page), the body text is displayed at what looks to be the default size for my browser. However, as soon as I click the Login link and login, when I am returned to the FPP, the font size being displayed is now larger.

FeatureRequest: MeFi bookmarks. I would love, on AskMeFi and MeFi, to be able to click "bookmark this link", and then be able to go to a page that lists those links I have bookmarked. Ideally sortable by post date and last comment date, searchable by keyword, but the sort/search isn't totally necessary.
"Why not bookmark it in IE/Mozilla?" Well, call me picky but I really prefer to reserve browser bookmarks for main pages of sites I visit ALL the time (i.e. MeFi/AskMeFi). It'd be nice to have a local archive of the stuff I'm tracking and want to keep coming back to.

That file will be periodically updated, but for now you can zoom around and see who is near you on a grand scale.

This might be a pony request, I'm not sure, though...
While doing a bit of research for a possible FPP in the blue, (to avoid posting something that already had been) I was wondering if there was a way to search MeFi for given links.
In other words, say I found some new, interesting information about a widget that had already been discussed on MeFi - sort of a follow-up, hey, lookit what they're doing now-kind-of-thing.
Is there any way to quickly check if the sites I found had already been linked without reading through pages and pages of comments and multiple threads to make sure it hadn't already happened on MeFi? A straight URL checker or something? Or is there a search-engine technique I'm ignorant of that would prove useful. Finally, should I have taken this to AskMeFi?

I updated the userpage location stuff. If you haven't noticed, you can now add your latitude/longitude anywhere on earth (not just the US), though I started by converting everyone over from zip codes. I also figured out sorting nearby users by zipcode, and now I'm showing the closest 50 people, along with a google map.
It works great in most cities.
Seattle and
Boston have a nice layout.
SF and
NYC are less than perfect because everyone in the same zip code got the same exact location, so points stack up.
LA is the worst in that regard. The zoom level of the google map depends on how many people are near you, NYC gets zoomed in, while people
in the sticks get zoomed out.

Several theories were put forth, but then the tea tree oil toothpicks distracted us from writing a formal paper to submit to an appropriate peer-reviewed journal. He's been spending the last few weeks emailing me whenever he sees these "twin threads" (my term, not his). Here, for your thank-god-it's-not-a-callout enjoyment are the ones he's pointed out to me: How do I get rid of [

Don't know if this is the right thread for this or not, but I'm curious as to people's thoughts. (If this is something I should, ironically enough,
save for my Ask MeFi question, I can do that.)
What kind of questions do you think Ask MetaFilter is best at? It "queries the hive mind," as its motto puts it, but obviously it occasionally fails. Yet sometimes it spectacularly succeeds.
My own thoughts are that it's good at harvesting a bunch of different personal experiences with anything (consumer products, life strategies, weight loss things), and it's good at some aspects of general and specialized knowledge (whether it be factual or pop culture), because you're tapping the knowledge of all of MeFi's varied readers and respondents. But occasionally it seems to yield no results whatsoever, or not turn up an answer at all, and I'm curious if there's a pattern in those 'failures', so to speak.
So, what kind of knowledge and qeustions do you think AskMeFi is well-suited for finding? And, also, what kind of knowledge and questions do you think AskMeFi does
not do so well at finding?

meta-ask: Are there any scientific studies suggesting the need for addicted people to "hit rock bottom" before getting better?
I've noticed in a lot of AskMe threads dealing with addiction in a loved-one that people say that the addicted person needs to hit "rock bottom" before they can start to get better. Now obviously in retrospect every former addict will have some low point that they can look back on as their lowest, but often the advice given also states that people should avoid helping their loved-one, in a sort of effort to accelerate their decent, like the quicker they hit the bottom the quicker they can get better.
I'm just wondering, why do people think this is true? Are there any studies that actually state this? It seems like a really important thing to be just guessing about.

Suggestion for a small format change: how about putting the byline on top of the comment in discussion threads? This would allow us to efficiently skip comments from users we don't want to hear from without resorting to user killfiles, and without wasting precious seconds of I'm-surfing-at-work-and-I-really-shouldn't-be-doing-this time to realize that this is a comment from

I'm confused. What is more important to mefites, actually responding to the content of FPPs, or rating their quality? I see a general (hence, no links in this question) preponderance to the former. It seems that many responses to posts are actually rating the quality of it and/or the poster, rather than the content of the FPP. I've read a lot of the sites about Metafilter and maybe I'm missing a concept or something.

They have a page up for the film, with a trailer and stills and whatnot. These are friends of course, and I've worked with them in the past, but I was not involved in this project. Would this be appropriate FPP material, or would it be dangerously close to a self-link? Or, for that matter, would a FPP about a movie trailer just suck to begin with?

Hey, Vancouverites! So if you're not too busy with Christmas shopping and personal grooming this weekend, maybe we could, you know, get together for some libations or general tomfoolery. How about it? Anyone interested?

This is the second time
RonZ's linked to komar.org. The first time was to the
halloween lights display and this time it's the christmas lights. If I recall correctly, the original poster of the christmas lights thing was outed as a self linker (although I can't find the thread) so I suspect it's a sock puppet at work.

Ever since MeFi's search feature went away and it now lets you search google or yahoo, I'm having trouble finding past posts I'm looking for. Right now I'm looking for a post from within the last month or so where you could enter a URL into this website and it would give you a bunch of feedback on how good/bad it was, etc..
Will the search feature be coming back any time? Google/yahoo don't seem to order by date, and seem to mix in all sorts of stuff that clouds up my search. I loved being able to restrict my search to "within the last month", etc...

Someone posted a thread (I think in the green) wherein makers/sellers of really high-quality / artisan quality mens goods were listed - briefcases, clothes, luggage. i found the pinhole camera dealer listed there, but i would like to find the thread and the other recommendations listed there. Any ideas? I tried all the searches I could for mens, gifts, leather, goods, quality, outfitters, etc., no luck. Hope it's OK to post this here?

Is there a way to see archived posts in Ask MeFi more than 30 days old by category? If not, it seems like an extremely useful feature--perhaps even show ALL posts by category and then just do "older results" at the bottom of the page on and on until the beginning of MeFi time...

Metafilterites rock. After posting this, I not only received a great number of helpful suggestions, but in my inbox today found a number of emails offering donations totaling to well, well,
well over the amount of money I spent on the puppy. Unbeknownst to me my RL friends have
also been holding a collection, so today has been a wonderful reminder of the generosity of friends and strangers and how awesome people are in general. Thank you! You guys are great! [MI]

Matt,
threads like this underscore the need for the anon poster to have the ability to respond in his or her thread. I'm sure that it's not a trivial amount of work for you - what would it take to make this happen, and what can we do to support your efforts?
I think that this is one of the most important features on the to-do list. It must be so painful for the poster to be unable to respond in many cases.

How can I be logged in to MeFi and MeTa, but not AskMeFi? When I'm reading AskMeFi and I try to login, the login page bumps me to MeFi. Then, when I click on AskMeFi, I'm not logged in. Que pasa?

Dear Mathowie,
Could you so kindly add to the preferences an additional customization? If it isn't too much work. One in which I can choose which search engine the top right search input requests a search from. I don't ask for much. I only need a choice between Yahoo and Google. If it is any easier, I'm the only one asking so you can just give me the option and no one else. If it isn't all too much a bother, sir.
Humbly,

what I really, really need is "comments" for Mefi Projects.
I know it's been discussed, but I think it might be important. Frankly, I've seen a few things posted that could use some further insight. I haven't been inclined to send things to the blue for further discussion, it should happen their on the (white)?

Tags with "multiple words in quotes" instead of onewordwikistyle (and clear guidelines on the tagging convention) might prevent people from making
such messes with their tags. (I know the posting area clearly says multiple words should be strung together, but people just don't read, and it's not intuitive.) Granted, I know this would screw up the hundreds of posts already tagged, so then maybe this is better off as a another call for a trusted "tagging clean-up committee"

You know what someone more clever than me should do? They should cull all the " Metafilter: (insert quip here)" 's from the site that are found in so many posts. It'd be fun just to have them all, particularly out of context of the original thread. Then maybe another clever person could make a little randomizer java applet or firefox widget to make them appear on the top of the blue. That'd be nifty.

This new login "safeguard" bites. I was having good results reading Metafilter with the lightweight browser
Dillo but logging in was impossible because Dillo lacks the capacity to display the coded characters one must enter "to prevent automated submissions". It doesn't work in Lynx either. This "feature" effectively restricts full participation in Metafilter to those who use recent fully-graphical browsers, which is a pain on this 9 year old machine I'm forced to use till my replacement power supply gets here. (It might also impact blind Mefites; anybody know?)
Is there another way to prevent automated submissions? Was there a problem with those that I hadn't noticed or is this new safeguard just one of those "nifty idea" kinds of things?

This had me thinking: wouldn't it make sense to have "needs 'more inside'" as a reason when flagging posts? I flagged it, but had to put "other;" and, if memory serves, plenty of good first-time posters have had their first threads derailed by the first few "whoa! muddying up the front page there!" comments.

I saw something in the blue, sometime in the last 6 months, which was maybe a book about "real" coincidences and at some point it stated the frequency with which they occur. I've googled and googled to no avail. Anyone remember this? One of them had to do with 9/11, I think, and one of them had to do with a guy in a motel room getting a phone call on misdial but it was actually intended for him or something and maybe saved someone's life?

Someone recebtly created a FPP from scanned magazine pages they had uploaded. Beneath the mantra of "best of the web" how far can one go? I often find great subjects for a post are not adequately documented online. In that case is it okay to upload some images, or create a little page to fill in the blanks in anotherwise post-worthy subject?

I just saw a comment on Metafilter today, I think it was, talking about another "[Fill in the blank] Filter" website, but saying that "Not much filtering was going on..." As a neophyte, I'd need some explanation about "filtering". It seems to be far more than, say, censorship or limiting access... but I was wondering if somebody could offer a more complete definition that covers specifically how Metafilter and other sites like it are "filtering". Thanks!!

Please help me find an old (say, last 18 months) mefi thread: I don't remember what the thread itself was about, but within it, someone posted a link to a video of an accident a newscaster had while standing in a grape-crushing/wine-making vat on a stage. She falls, gets winded, and makes this weird gurgling noise. Almost immediately thereafter, someone posted a "remix" mp3 of the gurgling audio. I've rarely laughed so hard, but cannot think of the right key words to search for so I can share it with others.....
Also, I'm working under the assumption that since I'm asking a metafilter-specific question, that this is more apropos here than on ask.mefi. Please set me straight if I have that wrong.

What's the best way to suggest a new tag for an existing post? E-mailing or IMing jessamyn? The original poster? Or should I just not worry about it? I can just keep a mark of it in my own del.icio.us, but that doesn't help anyone else who wants to search the same thing.

Feature request:
Mark this FPP as "Keep" -- like the Bloglines feature that makes posts sticky, or perhaps a list in the "Preferences" section. You could just use Bloglines, but MeFi is one of the few blogs where the native interface is better than a reader. Having a personal archive of favorite FPPs would be nice.
