I'm testing out ajax favorites on MeFi right now (only www.metafilter.com). If you open any thread you can add the post or any comment as a favorite without leaving the page. Lemme know if you hit any snags and please hold off on "
but, but, can you also make it do x?" requests until we're sure it works in most all browsers.

Chicago/Quad-Cities meetup - How about we Chicagoans celebrate winter by doing a ski meetup at one of the near(ish) ski hills? How about Chestnut in Galena? That would make it easy for quad cities folks too.
Also, don't worry if you've never ski'd, you undoubtledly won't be the only one.

Pony: After favoriting something, the link on the thread still says "add to favorites" (and for comments, it remains a "+"). Suggest changing to "remove from favorites" (and for comments, a "-"). Accidentally favoriting something requires going to the favorites page to undo it, when it could be a lot easier.

I know that it's Christmas, and
filmgeek seems like a great guy, and
this is indeed a great post. But are the paragraph breaks really necessary? It seems like they don't really add anything to the post, and they don't make the link any more clear or insightful. I don't really see why they have to be there, and they kind of throw off the eye when browsing the blue.
Sorry if this is the Worst Callout Ever. I realize that the topic of line breaks has been touched on
before, but as far as I can tell, we haven't gotten into the paragraph breaks too much. What is the policy on this? (To be clear, I don't intend this as a filmgeek callout, just a paragraph break callout).

I don't want to cirumvent the rules, so I'll hold off on giving the links until there's a reasonable consensus in favor of it.

AskMeFi Idea: Allow users to pay a nominal fee (e.g., $1) to post an 'emergency' question before their two weeks are up. The extra money could go towards maintenance/upgrades or whatnot, and the fact that it's not free would prevent it from being used often.

We recently had a MetaTalk thread regarding a three-letter word for a male cat and a five-letter word for a sea-faring vacation. I won't protest the thread's deletion; the entire site exists at the administration's discretion. What concerns me, however, are the Orwellian implications of deletion with no residual record in a community-based site.

4. Do mathowie and jessamyn have the power to delete each others' posts?

My first-ever pony request: In a given thread, what about a link next to each member's individual comments, that is titled "see all comments by this member in this thread." So, say, I want to see all of mathowie's comments in a particular thread, I click on that link and it gives me a page with just mathowie's comments in that thread. I know you can see all of a member's comments by going to their user page, but it's kind of cumbersome to click back and forth and you can't view all the comments together. It would be nice to have them all thrown up on one page. It would help us evaluate the position or argument that the person is developing throughout the thread.

In the
spirit of helpful hive mindedness, I thought I might ask if there's a central repository of sorts for MeFi specific acronyms ("FPP," et. al.). Not
basic internet slang acronyms, but ones used frequently on Mefi pages - some kind of list that might help the younger bees buzzing about.
I seem to remember a MeTa post at one point where everyone went off, acronymically speaking, but after a good deal of searching I haven't been able to find it.
Personally I've resorted to
this tactic for the most part, but I still get curious from time to time. Yes, I have Google, but what I have in mind is a MeFi specific short list / glossary to spell things out for the more recently initiated.

I really don't understand this site anymore. I have been reading for a year and been a member for about seven months. My last two posts turned into people yelling at me, or telling me I posted in the wrong place.
Just like this one will turn into people calling me names and being negative.
I don't get it. I read the "About Us" and "FAQ", I get yelled at for signing my posts, not posting in the right place. NOBODY offers help, just kicking me in the shins for not understanding the subtle nuances of this site. Which, I might point out, aren't explicitly outlined! Something too "MetaTalk-y"? Great, what does that mean? These the same folks that yelled at me when I made a comment that MeFi looks like 2 day old Reddit.
Y'all have fun with your internet clique. There are good people on this site, but these days it seems like the mean ones are loudest.
Signed,

Given the trouble of certain
sites, maybe we should also all look at another
problem that they have experienced, and make sure we ourselves do not need to send out such alerts. A simple MD5 hash against your user passwords in your database keep them much more secure than holding them plain text.

FPP question.
In making up an art centered post, I'm finding lots of great images with data that describes the particular piece of art. However, the art and data about it is on a web page with other pictures (sometimes relate, sometimes not)and the specific pieces I want to use do NOT have anchers. The data about the images is important, because the images are part of a storytelling genre/style and the data helps shed light on the images (which are at least 100 years old usually).
So would it be better to link to just the images or link to the web page and just mention that you have to scroll?

Looks like our answers to anonymous just don't hack it: The second question on "

Though, I have to wonder: I understand the desire for a second opinion, or maybe a third, possibly even a fourth, but what makes you think "Yeah, sure, I got 75 answers the last time I asked this, but I think I need to get a 76th opinion."
Note: There's no permalink on The Vine, so I have no idea when the question will scroll off into the archive, replaced by a new second question that renders this post incomprehensible. Sorry.
Note: this is not a callout or complaint, just something I found interesting and MetaFilter related

Women aren't funny. Please don't pretend not to know what I'm talking about.
I don't know - I think if you filled in an ethnic group and some other behavioral stereotype, with a link to a simularly bigoted rant that contains no scientific information, this post would be seen as explicitly and obviously offensive.
I'm not sure what the best action is here - it's not so overtly offensive that I necissarily think it should be removed. Reading back on previous Meta discussions it seems that this type of post is generally left standing, and looking at the faq, I see that bigoted language is not necissarily a qualification for deleting, but posts that are just saying "this group of people is inherently bad at x compared to that group of people, don't pretend you don't agree with me, and here's a link to some wingnut saying that too" seem to serve no purpose but causing people to freak out. MetaFilter has had a
Folding@Home team for one year now. This seems like a good opportunity to promote it, in case people missed the

Folding@Home is a distributed computing project at Stanford University that is using computers to find the causes and cures for certain diseases. They have
software available for Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X, as well as a specific client that can take advantage of the power of ATI graphics cards (which yield some amazing results). See their
FAQ for more information.
If you have a computer that spends a lot of time idling and would like to contribute, the MetaFilter team number is

I think that deleted comments which have been favorited should continue to appear on the "posts from ___ saved as favorites" page of the user who wrote them. For example, you can look at my profile and see that my stuff has been favorited 108 times, but you can't find all 108 items, because some of them no longer exist.
If they don't, then they should at least not count toward the number of favorited comments listed on that user's page. However, the first solution is better. The fact that someone marked something as a favorite shows that it had value to someone, even though it was deleted, so it ought to be preserved.

It would be really great if the site could recognize when a post is made with the same URL as a projects project, and associate the two, so that a) the main post is linked to from the projects page, and b) [post this to mefi] does not appear anymore. The main site post could be marked up too ("by our own whoozitswhat").

The responder wrote something to the effect of: 'I'm a public defender, and I've seen defendants in criminal matters try to trademark their names, and then try to impose a fee on the court whenever the court calls the defendant to bar. Courts don't like this.'
I'd like to contact the responder for more details. I'm currently doing research into IP abuse (copyrighting material that is properly protected by trademark, trademarking non-trademarkable words & phrases, etc.), and this example sounded so unbelievable and so on point.

Navelgazer's shoegaze-inspired rock band, the 21 Gun Solution, will be performing at Club Midway in the East Village at 9pm. We're opening for NaNuchka, who just won The Deli Magazine's Band of the Month poll.

What's going on with
the Scottish meet-up? Looks like there's lots of new blood, and most prefer Edinburgh, so... let's do something here. December 15th, 16th or 17th seems like the best bet, unless people are free this weekend.

Cortex, Artifice_Eternity, and all the MeFi compers are totally awesome. That's right: last night New Yorkers gathered to listen & I was mighty impressed. Good work all of you.

December 3
I think "random post" buttons for both AskMe and MeFi would be awesome. You would click on them and they would take you to a completely random post in their respective sections. They would function a lot like the "random article" link on Wikipedia. Not to mention - they'd be perfect for our ADD society.
Anyone with me?

So, we have a 'Popular Favourites' feature, and I love it. However, it's limited to the last 24 hours. Is there any chance of expanding that period of time?

i've got no problem with
users who like to hand out favorites like they mean nothing, but, really...
as an aspiring user of metafilter, i'm not quite sure how to grant these special little clicks (especially in light of
this). is there a proper ratio one might strive towards of posts i favorite versus posts of mine favorited by others? if not, is there some other measure which might guide me in my favoritism?

MinorPonyFilter: Is there a way to see favourites posted by me in the chronological order they were favourited in, not the order they were posted in? If not, could there be?

Error: your link is improperly coded, please check it, and try previewing again.
I was trying to make a new post with a link to
this page, but MeFi won't let me :( Are https links verboten in the blue?

I'm looking for one or more past AskMe threads in which people shared how weight-gain or weight-loss affected the way they were treated by other people. I know I've read these stories, but I'm just not finding them. It's possible that the they were shared in threads that weren't actually about obesity, but how others perceive us. Can somebody with better search skills help me?

I propose a Twin Cities meetup for Friday the 8th, at Britt's Pub downtown. I miss hanging with the local MeFites here and I think it's about time we met again. What do you think?

What on earth is the point of the Cat on LSD fpp in the blue from Meatbomb?
Surely we don't need telling that administering recreational drugs to animals is wrong, especially in a way that basically just encourages people to gawp. If people have a need to ogle animal cruelty there are plenty of sites to cater to their despicable tastes. Mefi, isn't one of them and I'd like to see Meatbomb's post deleted.

When is the best time of day to ask a question on AskMefi and get maximum response / eyeballs? Seems like there's a hundred questions per day lately. In my particular upcoming case it will be about gadgets, if that affects the answer. Has anyone done an analysis of posting rates over the 24 hour day, and which time periods get the most responses?

A few days ago there was an AskMe looking for music recommendations. Someone posted a link in it I wanted to bookmark later, but now I can't find it. Did it get deleted or am I just searching for the wrong tags (tried music and mp3)?

SUPER HOLIDAY POST MEGA GIVEAWAY!
So we're gonna do another "
best of" post thing, this time for December, but this time, no daily winners, just a top three at the end of the month (and I'm sure plenty of honorable mentions). I'll buy a Nintendo Wii for the top spot, a iPod nano for 2nd, and a new iPod teeny clip shuffle for third. You have all month, no sockpuppet ballot box stuffing, and favorites votes will help steer me and jessamyn to the good stuff, but we'll make the final decisions based on our gut reactions to the best of the best. Good luck to all!

Uh,
wtf? Is this really what Jobs is for? (And I get a coldfusion error trying to flag it, which is why I didn't just flag it and move on...)
