This is my greatest stolen modified idea today. Metafilter hitpoints! We all get 5000 to start. Once you level up via unattacked thread posting, you can cast healing spells on your favorite, but inexplicably hated MeFi pals, or do double damage with Fireballs. Anybody who reaches zero has their account closed, unless someone ells resurrects you by sacrificing 3/4 of their remaining points.

meta-meta-question -
I nearly hit "post" a few minutes ago here, but I stopped myself because I was asking follow up questions, only slightly off-topic. Good ones I think (and the simple thread is nearly worn out). I can't post another question for another 6.5 days. Shouldn't I just ask the questions in the thread while it's a fresh topic instead of posting a new question in a week? Or should I just suck it up and wait?

I Like Ponies: On the user page, where it says "posted X questions and X answers to Ask MetaFilter", it would be very nifty to add a counter of how many "best answers" this user has received on AskMe. It'll be a positive way to increase the signal/noise ratio -- and while it may provoke some competition, it'll be competition to be the most helpful and comprehensive, which should lead to good things for Ask MeFi.

Question: what constitutes a double-post? This is easy to answer for websites, but it seems to be harder for NewsFilter posts. One person recently argued that a second NewsFilter post on a previously discussed topic isn't a double if it offers a different perspective. However, I'm not sure that argument can be made for the topic of this post, which has already been discussed twice. So is every news article on a topic fair game for its own post? Early returns indicate that the discussion isn't going to be much different from the first two go-rounds, so what's the point? (yes, I know this is a double post).

Not every thread here should be a linear progression from a problem to a solution. There should be some room for frivolity and banter. Without it, we lose our sense of community and shared experience.

Kevin Kelly does a great newsletter called Cool Tools where he normally reviews hard-to-find stuff and geek gadgets. Today he offered up a nice review of Ask MetaFilter. It's not on the site yet, so here's a screenshot from email. I thought it got to the heart of Ask MeFi pretty well, especially the part about reading it for questions you didn't know you wanted to know, but were dying to find out the answers to.

Minor new tags feature. Look at the page for all posts tagged with flash. See the related tags on the side? Those are words commonly paired up with "flash". Clicking on the names will take you to posts tagged with that term. Here's the new part: see the + sign? That combines the two. Here's all flash posts that were also tagged music.

When exploring the Text Adventures post I noticed that the Photopia hyperlink was to a .zip file.

I am cautious about clicking on any .zip and .exe files online. Is there any protocol about linking to such on an FPP? At the very least shouldn't one note that the hyperlink is to a .zip by indicating so (i.e. Phototopia [note: .zip file])?

If someone posts a link to the front page that ends in a question mark, are they really linking to the best of the web, or are they just asking a leading question in order to generate discussion of their pet topic? And should we disallow front posts that are just trollish leading questions because they weaken the mefi brand and more importantly drive me nuts?

2. Does asking a question, and then having it deleted, still use up your AskMe quota?

However, today I see that it is listed in the Blogads on the front page. Last alluded to here: None of the redesign entries (unless I missed something) addressed the "comments by user" page, which is probably the clunkiest and least usable feature on the site. Long comment histories take forever to load (and tax the server); and you can't actually see any of the comments without clicking on each individual link. I think pagination, plus an ability to preview the actual comment, would be a great help.
