Sorry

I received a very thoughtful mail today from goodnewsfortheinsane calling me out for "snark inflation" and asking me to "tone it down a bit." The mod is right to call me out - I have been indeed been in a snarky mood - and I want to say sorry. [more inside]

How do you search AskMe?

How do you search through old askmes? I find tags pretty useless because I doubt they catch everything I'd want to find on a given subject. Google search limited by "site:ask.metafilter.com" is my main go-to, but on a broad topic, it is pretty useless as well, also it doesn't seem to always find everything. When I have a question, I'd rather see if it's been covered before rather than ask it again, but trying to find those old threads and sort through them is often overwhelming. [more inside]

Comments

I think it is detrimental to discussion on MetaFilter for people to bring trolling or offensive or just stupid comments from other sites into this one, so that people here can be duly outraged that somebody is wrong on the internet. [more inside]

Pony request: unread items on the recent favourites page

Ello. Under 'http://www.metafilter.com/home/myfavorites' the last 30 things I favourited are shown. This is lovely, but I was wondering is it possible to have 'x comments since you last looked' show up in brackets on the recent favourites page as well? Basically the same view as the current main Mefi pages presents? [more inside]

snarky agenda driven derails on askme

I've noticed this trend for a long time in the human relations section. Somebody will post a question in good faith and because something in their framing of the question rubs a particular member the wrong way said member feels entitled to toss back a glib, derailing and lecturing remark. Happy birthday Cortex!

I can't believe no one has said anything to our "datawranglin' mod" until now, but many happy returns!

Front-page porn

I thought this post was more than a little R/X-rated for its front-page content. While it was a funny link, I wouldn't have wanted that on my screen if, say, a student wandered into my office (and I'm at university). I wouldn't have minded a NSFW on the front page, with the content below the fold/link, but - sex, naked, sex, plow into, orgasm, and orgasm on the front page? Or am I a prude, in my dotage, who shouldn't have Metafilter open at work?

Sad, but thankful

I've had a terrible few months, but AskMefi was there with me and so I wanted to give thanks to all the Mefites who helped me along the way. [more inside]

Why do people sometimes link to the thread they are posting in?

I fairly often come across links in comments where people clearly intended to link to to a page elsewhere, but their link is to the very thread they are commenting on. For example chrchr clearly intended to link to the show The Americans at some other page, perhaps Wikipedia or IMDB. Are people confused how to create a link? Is there are bug changing some submitted links into the link to the thread after they submit their comment?

(mis)handling non-US content

Between the comments on this post about a story written by a Singaporean writer and the framing of this post about Storypick, I feel like Metafilter does not do non-American content well. [more inside]

New subsite beta (alpha?): FanFare

On the heels of the previous MeFiTV thread as well as internal discussions about how we could someday do a site around entertainment in general, we're ready to open up a small beta test of what discussions around episodic TV might look like at FanFare. [more inside]

Using askme as therapy?

I don't want to call anyone out specifically, because I don't want to bring extra negative attention to people that are clearly having a hard time, but I think anyone that reads askme regularly will notice certain repeat askers, who always ask variations on 'I am depressed, and my life is terrible, tell me how to be okay with that." And basically never take any advice from anyone. Is there a point where the mods will tell them that it's not a great use of askme? Or should they? Is everyone okay with using askme as a therapist when they clearly need to be in actual therapy?

RSS not updating

The RSS feed for the blue hasn't updated since the post at 4:41 this morning (ET), and the Ask MetaFilter RSS feed hasn't updated since 3:27 this morning. Am I the only one seeing this?

So Many Songs. So Many Steps.

There have been a lot of AskMe posts lately (just a few examples) asking for music recommendations, and I'm once again thinking how much I'd like to listen these songs while I walk. Like on a playlist I could easily download and listen to offline, on my Android phone. [more inside]

We're grownups, right?

Some folks are trying to actually talk about the content of the linked article. Due to excessive modding, now all we have are a bunch of silly comments about burritos and bears.

Train pass or student MetroCard?

Based on the participation in this post about the specialized high school system in NYC, it looks like a whole bunch of MeFites graduated from one of those schools. So I figured it'd be fun to have a MeTa thread to sound off.
