I find the "7 minutes ago" style of dating found on the "My Activity" to be far easier to parse than the normal way it is listed in threads. Any chance of a profile switch to enable that site-wide with the detail time available on a hover or something?

MetaFilter Runs v.3.1 is nearly finished, and it looks like
ajr is going to take out the speed title. Congratulations, ajr! There seems to be a consensus that the distance challenges are more motivating though (especially for those of us who are decidedly more

pj_rivera has proposed an ongoing series of monthly distance contests. The June one is just starting, so please list your Nike+ username if you haven't been issued an invitation yet.

I'm not big on doing the call-outs, but when the question poster
Mach3avelli asks a question and provides a big ol' great bunch of examples right in the question, well, just wanted to thank them for the
thread, and hope it makes the sidebar (which is NOT why I'm doing this, by the way).
Thanks also to some of the stellar suggestions the hive has posted, and
non sum qualis eram's description of Rossini. It's so easy to snark on people online, but it's good to thank someone when they do something nice as well. Y'all have almost always been so helpful, and I learn something new here everyday. Music is incredibly important to me - as I suspect so many of us! - so having a new playlist of music to investigate is a treat, and yet another example of why this was one of the best $5 purchases I've ever made in my life. Thanks all.

MeFi (and sub-domains) are still blocked to people with the wrong MTU settings using OS X (
previously). Right now I can't access any of the sites following a complete reset of my router last night. Safari halts on *.metafilter.com when the status bar says, "... Completed 3 of 4 items". This happens on both my computers connected to the router. I'm currently accessing via www.siteglove.com, an anonymous proxy. To be honest, I'm not sure if the MTU value is causing the problem, but there's clearly something wrong. Admins: Please look at the comment on the previous threads about firewalls blocking network discovery traffic (from user eriko). That's your cure. Windows computers work around this automatically. Other computers don't, unless the user tweaks!

Onlyconnect and I hosted a gathering yesterday evening starting around 6 pm eastern. Attendees included at least five Mefites. Topics dicussed at that party that have subsequently appeared on the front page through no action of our own include:
- An extended discussion of "Freaks and Geeks"
- The further creative output of Judd Apatow
- Lesbian Until Graduation (LUG)
Look MetaFilter, despite the fact that I wore the new MetaFilter shirt that onlyconnect gave me (a decision driven by its festive coloring and roominess, since I was planning some serious eating), it's time to stop following us around and copying us.

When I post a comment in a thread, the page reloads at the comment box, necessitating a scroll upward to view my comment and any comments that might have been posted while I was posting. Might it be better for the page to load at the last comment on the previous page (i.e. the last comment on the copy of the page used to post) or the comment directly after?

Often in Ask Metafilter the original questioner chimes in with clarifications or extra information, but answerers don't necessarily read all previous comments before chipping in. Do people think it might be a good idea to highlight the original poster's comments in thread? (Obviously this only makes sense for Ask).

So I found two cool sites, dealing with entirely separate things that could make meaty FPPs. I just don't have the time to do the research to flesh them out right now. Should I make a pair of posts, or one post connected in a jokey or left-field way? Should I just make follow-up posts in my own thread as I find more stuff, or would you prefer the style of my previous posts, in general, even if it means I forget about stuff that may potentially be cool? I see a massive variety of styles, but I figure I may as well sound the hivemind out. Please feel free to ignore me if I'm being too n00bish.

There's a little clickable tab thingy labelled 'My Comments', as well as a 'My Comments' clickable link in the list-of-things-to-do near the top on the front page. Clicking each identically named thing leads to markedly different pages, one of which is useful (the one which puts your comment in context), and one of which is not (the one which just lists the posts you commented on). This is deeply ontologically upsetting.
Also, when you post a thread on Metatalk, the text entry box is labelled 'Description:', rather than, e.g., 'Text:', or 'Post:'. I feel this additional category violation affront is essentially a slap in the face.

I ask not so much to seek the retention of my own comments; the world wouldn't be worse off if all of them were deleted. But I am flabbergasted at the inconsistency in treatment -- e.g., the comments on

A few weeks ago, I posted a question about our
mountains of returnable bottles. Just thought I'd mention the outcome...two days after my post, we found a flyer attached to our doorknob. The local high school was collecting returnables as part of a fund-raiser for a student whose house had burned down. We hauled our many (many!) bags of bottles out to the curb as directed. We weren't there when they were collected, but a few days later our next-door neighbor caught me outside and mentioned that he'd been present when the kids came around to collect the bottles, and one of them yelled "Hey, jackpot!" to the others when they hit our curb.
No particular point of this post, I guess, other than it was somewhat serendipitous timing that I had all our bottles bagged and had just posed the question as to what the heck to do with them.

I’ve been here for a couple of months now, and I’ve gotten to know a few people, but I still don’t feel as if I’ve become a part of the community yet? Pony request: Can we have temporary favorites?
There are often threads I want to follow, but not make favorites, but if I make them a favorite, then I have delete from my favorites later on. This gets to be a chore when there's a lot of interesting stuff.
Yes, there's the My comments page, but I find it useless, as it only tracks the last ten comments made to the thread, as opposed to only new comments since I last read the thread and it tracks threads I've commented on.
With temporary favorites, I could say "watch this thread for x amount of time". Then if there was a page of just these temp favorites, it make it easy to keep tabs on threads that interest me.
Or basically, just a better way of keeping tabs on threads the user finds interesting without having to make them favorites, which seem like a more permanent marker.

Just wondering if there are RSS feeds for posts? I've just recently discovered netvibes and it would be great if I could use RSS to keep track of posts.
Of course, even better would be if I can get an RSS feed of my posts with an indication of how many comments are there. That way, I could quickly see if any new comments had been made, without having to add all these new RSS feeds everytime I make a post!

Admins: Metafilter is blocked for people with incorrect MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit) settings on their router/computer(s). See
this thread. I had this problem for several weeks, during which Metafilter's banner would load, but nothing else. Something needs to be tweaked on either the Metafilter server, or the Metafilter routing system (firewall settings?). My router was set to the default values for my ISP when this happened (BT Broadband in the UK). In other words, this isn't caused by people tweaking their settings—some ISPs are effectively incompatible with Metafilter in its current setup.

this AskMe thread, would any MeFi parents in the Bay Area be interested in a family-friendly Meetup?

DC Meetup? Thinking last week of May, perhaps the Thursday night (May 24) before Memorial Day weekend? Also, how do people feel about meeting in the Capitol Hill area?

Inspired by
this thread, and in an effort to help us know each other better, would it be possible to have tag clouds of everything we've ever written on metafilter - not just the tags from our posts - displayed in our profile?

Are the deletions a bit wonky today? Some are showing up as the less uncommon scorched-earth-deletes (
61928,
61950); some aren't appearing on the front page but have no deletion reason and appear open once you enter their thread (
61932,
61936,
61942).

This Thread. Got me thinkin as to how the Meta World is powered; Are there things we could do to make the Blue a little bluer? The Green a little greener? The Gray a little… sunnier? I for one would happily slap down another $5, or more, to make this happen.

Hey everyone, a friend and I will be down in L.A. for a convention, May 23 to May 29th.
Anyone want to get together with me for a night of fun?

Since people are always posting about their GuFfs, BuFfs, and SO's, some of which are also MeFi users, I was wondering if there were parent-son/daughter or sibling users as well (that don't care if we know). Might make for some fun reading.
