Another "Best of Metafilter" request.
So, my grandfather died today (
as I anticipated a few months ago), and one of my first reactions is to look to Metafilter for comfort and guidance. I've found a few relevant threads on my own (just taking a cursory glance at
ColdChef's posting history helps put death in perspective), but I'd appreciate other mefites' help: what are the most helpful, or comforting, or grounding threads you've read on the site that have to do with death and grieving?

This
question was deleted (and we all figured it would be), but I'm curious: What if it was for real? Did the mods contact the asker? Did he confess to it being a joke? If he said it was a joke, did you believe him? What if he really does have a dead body in his apartment? Do we just say "Oh well" or do the mods try to contact the authorities?

Google has once again updated its Chrome browser, and as I seem to remember happening before, the little buttons have disappeared from Metafilter's edit window, that allow you to easily create bold, italic text or a link.

I would like to have a view that combines inbox and sent mail. This would be useful to provide a pseudo-threaded view of memail conversations. Thank you for your consideration.

Why can't I make my AskMeFi question anonymous? Was this changed and I missed it? I searched, but to no avail.

I, too, am trying to find a comment I'm almost certain I read on the Blue. It was a refutation of the glib, "The internets is serious business!"-style dismissal of people who would deign to take anything said online to heart. The tone of the comment was something to the effect of, "Sure, it's no big deal, it has only connected much of the world's population in ways only dreamed of," or something. I'm not doing it justice, nor am I trying to.
The commenter might have been quoting someone else. Many thanks to anyone who can locate this!

How about if the Metafilter Scholarship be used as an award for a project by a Mefite they can present publicly at the big 10th anniversary event? The winner could be chosen by how many times their presentation is favorited as a live event being posted on Metatalk because it's related.

I'm looking for a quote I'm pretty sure I read on MeFi years ago. My memory doesn't do it justice, but it basically said that until a man is 30, he still believes he could work out constantly, get buff, and become a Batman-like person saving the world. (There was more to it than that.) Does anyone know what I'm talking about, and can you link to the quote? Thanks!

I posted an AskMefi question yesterday but now it's gone. So how do i know whether it's been officially deleted or not? I went to My Profile; under 'Contributions', I clicked on the 'questions' (number 40) and brought up the questions I've asked. The one i posted yesterday is not on the list.
I also did the search: http://www.metafilter.com/activity/29435/posts/ask/ as suggested in the FAQ and also came up blank.
However, when i go to the 'new question' page on AskMefi, it says i've posted in the last week. I know for sure that I haven't posted anything in the last week other than the question i posted yesterday.
I'm ok with deletion, but it would be nice to know the reason for future reference.

So I've asked a few AskMefi questions now, and have noticed that they tend to get responses for about five hours, give or take, then the responses stop. When is the optimal time during the week to ask my AskMefi question, so that I get the maximum number of eyeballs looking at my question, and thus, get the maximum number of answers. I know that this may not necessarily increase the
quality of the answers I get. I am talking about sheer quantity. Thanks!

I was just about to post a giant multi link post... for some reason it completely disappeared. In the past, any mefi posts i've worked on have "saved" beautifully if I might have navigated away from the page. I didn't even do that here. What the heck mighta happened?

OK, so I know I can enlarge text in Fire Fox and Chrome and so forth..
but a growing number of of sites (e.g The New Yorker) provide the ability to resize text (usually 3 choices) and it's cookie stored so that every time the site is revisited, that text size is..automatacilly, magically, there. I don't personally need it, but I bet some older folks do.

I'm looking for an old Ask thread about the different ways people do well in school. It talked about the disdain people who glide through have for the people who study hard, and that the former consider effort a sign of not being smart enough to excel without trying.

I'm looking for a post on Metafilter, maybe within the last year or two, about these women who would 'convert' to be men for the rest of their lives - not sexually/biologically, just in terms of their function within their villages (and in some cases in terms of gender, though). They were accompanied by photos of old men (or women) wearing pants and sort of hanging out and looking really relaxed/hip/baller. If I remember, this took place in somewhere in Eastern Europe. Thanks!

Based on comments in
this thread, I would like to propose a moratorium on the watching of "The Wire," or BET, or the listening of any Wu Tang or Rick Ross CDs for any Mefite who does not
personally know and interact with members of the "black community," who despite what many here think, are exceedingly diverse in class, education, culture and norms.

One step closer. Today, jailed Iranian-American dissident
Roxana Saberi had her original term replaced with a suspended sentence and was freed from prison, allowing her to leave the country immediately. However, there is no word yet from Iran regarding our own Hossein Derakhshan,
hoder on Metafilter, who was jailed along with Saberi three months ago.

Trying to locate a previous metafilter thread on getting high, specifically with legal herbs. I'm looking for it because there is a link within to some online herbal place (with shaman in the name) that got their start trying to reduce pain from braces. My kid is 12, just got braces, and is having a hard time. If this should be askmefi then please delete, sorry and thanks.

Remember
this thread about Amanda Palmer and the Lexington High School writing and producing the play "With The Needle That Sings in Her Heart" (based on Anne Frank's experiences in the Holocaust and utilizing some music from Neutral Milk Hotel's
In The Aeroplane Over the Sea?)
The play will be Webcast live from
Party on the Internet at 7:30 pm EST on saturday night.

Is there any plan, project or brain storming about bridging MetaFilter with Twitter and/or other instant messaging services?
Not a "feature request" because I have no idea what it could be, but Twitter is becoming my first surface signal toward content on the Web and it would be interesting to bring some Mefi content to this surface.)

Previously covered on the
blue,
The Room will be showing at
Chandler Cinemas, May 15th at 11pm. If you haven't had a chance to see this fantastic trainwreck of a film, now would be a great opportunity. I'd like to host a meetup/pre-film party at my house starting around 6 ir 7 if any AZ Mefites would be interested.

I'm wondering about re-posting something from Metafilter on my site,
The Rumpus. If someone posts something that's say, 2 paragraphs, can I copy and paste the first paragraph in quotes. Then I would give full credit to the poster, metafilter, and link to the original post. I'm imagining there is actually a document on this site somewhere detailing the answer to this question, but I haven't been able to find it. We often link to things we find on Metafilter with a "via." But I'm talking about quoting text.
Thanks!

Baltimore meet up May 16th or 17th?
Myturnplease and I will be in Baltimore that weekend looking for places to live, employment, etc... in preparation for our move from NYC to Baltimore on July 1st. Like to meet some Baltimore mefites and get the inside scoop. Courtesy of Electroboy I know of some bars, but not those of which would be good for a meet up. Ideas? Are those dates feasible?

I am missing something? When I search for something in AskMe, I sometimes see a comment (under the comments tab), or an excerpt from a comment, that I might want to explore by, say, clicking on said comment and viewing the entire post. Is there a simple way to do this? Am I missing an obvious link to the comment(s) in context?
(Also, suggestions on asking about this without saying "comment" so many times are appreciated)
