Hey Matt! You own a Nintendo DS, just like I do. Infact, Metafilter has several DS owners, as this
question of mine revealed. The thing is, we're not playing each other online as we damn well should be. So how about adding a field or two on our preferences pages to allow us to prominently advertise our Friend Codes?
It's been talked about before. Let's make it happen.

someone suggested in a AskMe thread that we start a Teen AskMe section. I'm all for it since we are a level headed bunch (excluding some times at MeTa.) I am sure the grammar and butchering of the English Language would bug some of you. I think it would be better then all the banner ad sites that are trying to sell teens garbage. What are your opinions?

Now in
alpha beta gamma whatever:
MeFi Music. Built in 12 hours with help from
pb, it's still got some rough edges and features to come, but for now you can upload a song you've written and recorded (this isn't for file sharing), stream it from the front page or from
its own page (where you can also leave comments). You can add things to playlists and
stream those too. And
the RSS feed is a podcast you can drag into iTunes to suck down every mp3 that gets posted. I'm sure there are bugs and the color scheme was slapped together in five minutes, but expect to see things ironed out in the next couple weeks and I'll add it to the global nav for all sites when it feels complete. If you have any comments or questions, drop them here.

Is it just me, or is the
AskMe RSS Feed reported to be broken on BlogLines more often than not?
"The feed URL returns a page that does not look like an RSS feed. This can be caused by the feed URL being incorrect, or it can be caused by a configuration issue with the server hosting the feed. If this error continues, you should check the feed URL and, if it is wrong, subscribe to the correct URL."

Is there a way to paste formatted (e.g. indented) code into an AskMe response? If not, could such a feature be added? It would really help out threads like

I keep seeing sock puppets mentioned (for example,
here) in various MeTa conversations, and I was wondering, since I don't want to go tunneling through all those mounds of...
conversation; is there a canonical list of known sock-puppetry? For example, on the Wiki, or in a wing of MetaChat? I'm not talking about outing those who are still behaving or anything, but rather addressing the question in an "after the fact" sort of way.

AskMe deletions, again. I know it's annoying to hear us all complain about deletions constantly, but it seems like a lot of innocuous comments are getting axed. I understand not insulting the poster, or making just "wisecracks" (which in my mind are by definition at the expense of the poster) but does every bit of human interaction that doesn't quite solve the question -- but does engage with the poster in a respectful way -- need to go?

It'd be kinda cool to see where Ask.meta fails...and possible future solutions.

how to occupy oneself during three months in the stir. But when curious minds eager for details on how he came to such a predicament click on the Homepage URL link in his user profile page, they're greeted with a "Whoa!!" NSFW porn site.
Shouldn't he warn folks on the profile page? Should I or someone warn readers of the AskMe thread? What's the drill on something like this? [And I hate to be paranoid, but could it be possible this is an attempt to drive traffic to said porn site?]

Here are two charts about metafilter.
Posts and user numbers and
comments and user numbers. Each dot represents a post (or comment), with the post number and number of the user who posted (or commented) as the xy data. I don't remember what prompted me to make these (some metatalk thread, I'm sure), but I found them again on my hard drive and thought someone else might find them interesting (I brought them back up to date, too). There are half a dozen interesting little milestones that show up in the graphs, more than I could see probably.

I would like to commend the regulars of AskMetaFilter for letting their style of asking questions happen. It inspired the way I write AskMe questions now (and now I don't care if any people answer). Which brings me to my next and final point; about ettiquete and policy. Why can't people relax and just realize that's it's a sandbox, and if you kick the other kid's toy or throw sand in their face, I'm going to shove you? The conflict is necessary to watch the community form, but I think it's time to move to the monkey bars, you know what I mean kids?

It's been a while since I visited my profile page. In doing so, I found it to be far more cluttered and loaded with information than it used to be. Can we get some options to hide some of these things (like top ten tags)?
For example, if I have no contacts, why not just hide any text about it? Why does it have to say that I have no contacts? If I have no projects or favorites, why not just hide that information instead of saying that I don't have any?
And can't that big long "What's the deal with your nickname..." text be shortened to "Personal Info" or something similar?

How can you think they're ugly? They have cute little accordion butts!

So I reply: "The accordions are necessary for the polka dots."
Now my little pun is deleted. There follow three extremely complimentary references to my pun, none of which is on topic, none of which is deleted. So now it looks like
theperfectcrime made the pun. Now I don't mind deletions; I've had my share. But this is eerily selective, isn't it, jessamyn? Almost the perfect crime.

How difficult would it be to program an edit function into our comments that allows us to revise our contributions within 1-5 minutes of posting it? I think it'd be a very cool thing to have for us OCD types that apologize after we spell something wrong and immediately correct ourselves in the next comment. Also, it could serve as a conscience (you post something, you regret it immediately, and get rid of it). Note, I'm not asking for unlimited editing. Only the ability to edit within 1-5 minutes of your original post.

New features for favorites: favorited posts and comments from your contacts have been added to your
usercontacts page and there's
a page for all favorites from your contacts. This should be useful for finding stuff you may have missed, but that people you trust and enjoy reading deemed worth of saving.
People that marked something as a favorite are no longer shown below each post, but
on their own page. On
your own favorites page you can now see who else marked the same item as a favorite, and the
recent popular favorites page now lists comments as well as posts. Whew.

People, I have google spreadsheet invitations. I'm not sure how limited the initial invitation was, but if you're waiting to get in, I'll invite you. You need to have a gmail account, though.

A tiny, tiny pony...is it easy to find out what the average number of votes/feedback per Project is, for all time, and then just for this year? Thx! This is just a one-time thing, no wish for a full feature request.

Is the AskMeFi RSS feed intermittently dropping questions?

Pony: Year included in the posted by line. With the year a posting was made appearing only once at the top of the page browsing the archives can be confusing. [MI]
For example how about changing the posted by line to:

I would like to make a MeFi post about a young Malaysian blogger trying to raise funds for treatment for a life-threatening disease. Is this ok? How should I go about it?

Time for an SF meetup. In fact, we should have one before the 28th of June. Preferences for date and locale? Fallback plan: a Tuesday night at Zeitgeist.

I like the look of Metafilter. It is an attractive site. The only part of it that I hate with a passion is the "You just flagged something, good for you" page. It is an eyesore. I hate its whiteness and the lack of words on 90% of its surface. Let's make it a pretty color and spread the words out some. What do you say?

I'm looking for an animated GIF that was posted inline somewhere here. It shows two dogs humping and one throwing up. It's for a friend. Really. Honest.. If someone could email it to me, I'd appreciate it.
(Matt and Co., you have my solemn oath that I will not use it here, ever).

Was there a "Bush expresses regret for 'Bring it on!' " thread, and I missed it?
apolgies if this should've been asked in AskMeFi instead

I know this has been brought up before, but I believe that it's frustrating enough to deserve being brought up again. Why is the wiki so spam-ridden?
Every time I go to look at it, at least 75% of the things I click on are spam or "DeletedPage: This page was WikiSpam. "
Seriously, If nobody's going to put in the effort to keep the wiki spam-free, why even bother to have it, especially now that we have a FAQ?

I have an extra invite to OiNK. As I orignally was invited to the site by a kind hearted mefite, I thought of offering it to the community. Is this appropriate?

This comment looked fine on live preview. I was trying to indent the italicized part. I take it that CSS commands aren't a good thing to put into comments.

NYC. It looks like I will be in The City this coming weekend. I know you folks just met up, but is anyone interested in hanging out this coming Friday night?

dynamic.fmpub.net: It's come up before, and I know I can block it in my hosts file, but why does loading/rendering the entirety of Ask.Metafilter depend on contacting this site? When it is slow to respond, the entire site seems to hang, which should be avoided.

With the advent of the Favorites feature, has the 'fantastic post' flag been made obsolete? For instance,
this question was only given two fantastics, but is a favorite of 32 users. This pattern is exhibited in nearly every question on the
fantastic questions page. Are people no longer flagging posts as fantastic? Should these two features be combined, or one be eliminated?

Navigational links that go back/forward one day on the "1, 2, 3, 4, 5 years ago." pages would be fun!
And maybe add a
6 years ago link to the sidebar?

Why does
this guy get a new asshole for not being scientific about his very unscientific question, when two
complete morons, not to mention
a related question, get helpful advice?
Chatfilter, yeah, but Christ -- so is half of AskMe.
Really. Tell me.
Is it simply the ebb and flow of the universe that requires some dumb questions go down
in flames while others
get answered?
Or is there a secret formula that evokes pity rather than scorn?

This fun and useful thread made me think about how many great writers participate here. Some of us are published authors; some are unpublished (but great) wordsmiths. I've learned many things about writing from Metafilter members, and I admire the care with which they construct their clear, evocative prose.
Would anyone be interested in forming some soft of MeFi Writers Group? I have no idea what form it would take, but I though we could toss the idea around and see if it lands anywhere specific.

Ask Metafilter: I have a few pieces of art I am trying to identify. Can I embed the pics (which I feel will probably lead to more responses), or should I link to my flickr account?

Thread 52028 (on Twin Peaks) is broken at the bottom--if I recall correctly, it's broken in the same way that the thread about the Ross sisters was broken a couple of days ago.

Did my project submission get lost? Or have admins just not had a chance to approve it? I only ask because it doesn't show up in my projects list at all, and I'm not sure if that's because it's not approved or I screwed up the submission somehow.

I think
this post is really inappropriate - the poster has cobbled together some news stories to make a horrible, unsupported inference about a non-public figure who is, in all likelihood, totally innocent. Such speculation, especially with no available facts to support it, may be entertaining but is also extremely insensitive to the survivor and her family. Is this what we want to do now?
