I'm not going to say it on the
AskMe thread, because that's not the place for it, but we are getting REALLY WEIRD about food and diet.
Is there a reasonable way I can filter specific posting topics or tags out of my personal view of MetaFilter?

QFT.
Curious, I looked it up. Urban Dictionary has the definition as "quoted for truth" but that definition certainly doesn't match the context in which it is used on here. Little help?

Just personal curiosity at work here- I noticed a reference elsewhere a few days ago to recording the upcoming podcast, which, unaccountably, cheered me up. (I look forward to the podcasts, because like as not they cover something interesting I didn't see in my normal perusals of the site.) So, what I got to wondering was ...

Is it possible to change my username or should I close my account and pay another 5 bucks?

I didn't realize that we could export our comments. That is fricking awesome. But what does this mean:
Once you start your download, your weekly export will be counted.
Counted? I don't understand.

Obama is expected to announce his VP choice tomorrow via text message to the masses. Dozens, or perhaps hundreds, even thousands, of mefites will be notified of the selection all at the very same instant. Several of them may want to make the first crappy post on the subject. Shall we let this happen?

You know, I get as sick as anybody over every minor story about the U.S. presidential election getting posted to the Blue, and I know the mods are trying to keep the quality of posts up, but it still surprised me to go there tonight and find NO DISCUSSION of what history could very well define as THE important turning point in this election: John McCain's not knowing how many houses he owns. This on the heels of his definition of $5 million as defining "rich". Could no one draft a decent FPP about it, or has it been decided that this story isn't going on the Blue no matter what? If so, one has to wonder: why?

Pony request: Envisioning a golden, glowing future in which any number of other (that is to say,
non-dick punching) songs at MeFi Music get the kind of comment action that "
the most Favorited track of ALL TIME!" has gotten, I'd like to see individual comment linkability in MeFiMu threads. Like the blue and the other subsites have. Might this be possible?

We have
MyAsk. Why not MyMeta? How about a tab that filters by tags. Example: ignore anything with linux or politics. Keep anything with maps or art.

FireFox. MetaFilter. A script on this page has stopped responding, do you want to stop the script, debug the script, or cry. Anybody else seeing this on Firefox 2.x?

I've seen a few comments recently claiming or intimating that "HURF DURF" originated here, and I would like to set the record straight on this extremely trivial matter.

Anyone else unable to add a
custom MeFi icon webclip to their iPhone home screen? I just get a snapshot of the page, instead of the nice blue MF logo (which was working for me earlier this year.) Other sites with this functionality are working fine. Tech Specs: first gen iPhone, OS 2.0, unlocked and jailbroken.

Imho this question didn't feel like it was "askMefi" so here goes. I'm observing how groups/communities form organically or virally online around common values/goals/whatever and I wonder if there's ever been a discussion, thread, study etc done on Metafilter's beginnings, how it grew etc? Any thoughts, stories, anecdotes?

When a title (or possible any word) in a contact's post is long enough, it overflows the bounds of the sidebar and causes the front page to have right-scroll.
Pic here.

"Submitting a link is akin to writing a little paper for school."
"I just went to MetaFilter and the top link is "How many goats are you worth?". Is that more intellectual than the entries on Reddit?"
"I hate, hate, hate it when they put multiple links in single words."
reddit discovers Metafilter.

I use the "Popular Comments" feed to keep track of all the great things you witty people are always saying. Currently, the title of each comment in the feed is formatted like so:
By orthogonality in MeFi
which does not provide any sort of context for the comment.

Reading works just fine already, either via RSS or just a text-mode browser. Posting is a little harder. Links, Elinks, and w3m all seem baffled by the login---Elinks, for example, reloads the login page, while w3m gets back to the question but then asks me to log in again. Does anyone know why this is so? Is there some common unsupported standard that prevents these browsers from logging in? (Note: It happens with a lot of sites that need login, not just MeFi.)

Two months ago, Fearless Leader gave
a neat talk at WebVisions 2008 about how to make money off your particular web passion without resorting to venture capital interference or selling out, and
the slides and the audio (
MP3) from his talk are now online. It's plenty cool enough to watch/listen to on its own merits, if you've ever dreamed of running your own web company or making a small-but-cool web tool -- but since MetaFilter (and what it's been like to start and run MetaFilter) are mentioned prominently, I thought it was worth noting here, rather than on the Blue.

I found what I was looking for, after 2+ years, including an answer to my very first AskMe post! For posterity, the answer to
this question is
this, and the answer to
this question is "Happy Go Lively" which is available
here.
I'd love to be able to update my own askme posts, even if they were from years ago. I understand that the discussion has to end at some point, but if I found what I believe to be the definitive answer (since it was my question, after all), it would help those who come searching later on to keep the answer and the question together.

I thought there was a page that listed Mefites on different social networks, i.e. Mefites on Flickr, Twitter, et al, with their associated usernames on said sites. I'm not thinking of the aggregated
twitter/
flickr pages. Or am I? Did I dream this?

Yeah. I know this makes me seem wildly stupid, but... I was trying to post a question on AskMe. I wanted to post it anonomously. (It was a medical question.) But I couldn't figure it out. I either had to post under my pseudonym, or I had to get a new account.
That can't be right?
