September 2010 Archives (all archives)
New ads from The Deck will start showing up on front pages tomorrow, but don't worry, you can turn them off. [more inside]
"You hit your favorite limit for the day." - I'm getting this message a lot today, though I "only" have 30-40 favorites. I thought the limit was 100 or so ... [more inside]
Pony request: On the front pages of each site (MeFi, AskMe, etc.), would it be possible to change the little plus-es to little minus-es when you add a post as a favorite? Or is there a reason this won't work/is a bad idea?
Protip: When one says one is leaving the thread, one should probably leave it.
Front page rendering oddly.... [more inside]
I remember reading a comment on why the standard recommendation of "voting with your wallet" if you want to see political and/or economic change is bad/bullshit/bogus (in the opinion of the poster). My MeFi-fu is failing me. Please help? [more inside]
any filterites living in rio de janeiro and up for a meetup? [more inside]
Hoder update: good news - not death. Bad news - 19 years. [more inside]
tl;dr? MeFi readers are apparently not as engaged as Facebook or BoingBoing readers: "I would have expected MetaFilter readers to hang around [and read the article] and Boing Boing users to quickly move along; but actually the opposite is the case."
Can I have a pony IRL? I mean... for IRL? [more inside]
I believe this FPP fits exactly the model of what articles get deleted for. MeFtes complained it was deliberate trolling. What happened? [more inside]
Well, bless our snark-filled, sugar-coated hearts: Your answers to my question, "'Bless your heart' and other backhanded phrases?," make it to public radio's "A Way With Words." [more inside]
How do we detect self-links? Interested in the mechanics and rules. [more inside]
As far as I can tell, there's three factors at play with deleted posts – moderator opinion, initial crowd opinion (comments), and initial crowd opinion (flagging). And I'm kind of seeking to understand how it interplays, [more inside]
Tiny pony request. On the AskMe front page, a question has a green checkmark next to it if any of the answers has been marked "best answer." If you look at your own history of AskMe coments, there's a green checkmark next to any of your AskMe answers that was marked "best answer." In that same history of your AskMe comments, why not have a green checkmark next to the title of any question in which there have been "best answers" by anyone else? [more inside]
When can we expect to have this I/P ban lifted? [more inside]
What comprises the total hardware used in delivering to us our beloved MetaFilter? Not just the main server, but also any personal electronics a mod might use to regulate.
What is the protocol for reposting MeFi postings on my twitter stream? [more inside]
So I was looking at this bizarre Metatalk thread and started to wonder: is there a way for me to see which of my comments have been deleted? [more inside]
Is there any chance of getting a RSS feed for Recent Activity? [more inside]
Censorship? [more inside]
Is there an appropriate way to note follow-up on a closed MeFi post? [more inside]
They're talking about Metafilter's community guidelines and moderation policy over at Hacker News.
OEF Meetup? [more inside]
"Just show him this thread" - this advice gets given practically every other day and I was wondering, do people really mean it and think it is a good idea? [more inside]
Confirming Meet-Ups without including an exact address. Possible? [more inside]
According to a news report (in Farsi) shared through his Facebook group, hoder, or Hossein Derakhshan, has been sentenced to death in Tehran. [more inside]
This post, if made as a comment, might stand a good chance of being sidebarred. Was there really no way to save it? [more inside]
I just made my first post to metafilter. [more inside]
My account doesn't remember that I favorited something with my phone [more inside]
Why do we close AskMetafilter threads after one year? [more inside]
5x SYLT (32x SYLT): Has Metafilter.com simply become a Youtube/Othertube Internet video bookmarker? [more inside]
Can we have a Popular Comments tab like the Popular Favorites one? [more inside]
In two recent AskMe threads (Non obvious things you shouldn't say to women and a similar about men), vague and general questions were asked. The community response wandered all over the map from very good, to not so good, where individual dislikes were conflated to be something all of certain subgroup dislke (1, 2). I think this is a problem that not only degrades the tone of the site in general and AskMe in particular, but also can confuse the asker. So I'm putting this issue before the community to see if the community views this as a problem and if so, discuss ways to mitigate it. [more inside]
Update-filter: Interactive fiction Flash Game The Curfew, mentioned and discussed at length in this now-closed post is out of beta and actually playable. Also, have you noticed how much dystopian sci-fi is set in 2027? It's the new 2019!
This FPP appears to me to be intentionally inflammatory. I participated in the derail and am bringing it here at the suggestion of Navelgazer. [more inside]
Favorites not working in Chrome? [more inside]
In Google Reader breaks in text are displaying as brbr and single quotes are not appearing. This is in Firefox and in Chrome (Win7) but not on my phone (Palm Pre). [more inside]
Is it possible to make the Mefi Sideblog Updates (mefi) Twitter account link to the actual thread, rather than the sidebar archive? [more inside]
What if there was a tag for non-video posts? I can't watch videos at work, but I can read text. [more inside]
Follow-up: Elizabeth Warren to be named as interim head of the newly created Consumer Finance Protection Bureau. Previously. [more inside]
What are you all saying that poor Jessamyn has to keep deleting in this thread? Also, women of Metafilter, are men you don't know actually speculating to you about your bra size and suggesting your mood is reflective of your menstrual cycle?
dynamic.fmpub.net. However, the ad server reports that it is should no longer be used. [more inside]

blue_beetle's insightful comment on how the Internet funds itself has prompted a front-page reddit post.
Can we have an AgonyFilter for certain categories of questions on AskMe? [more inside]
Can we collectively agree to stop using "mouth breather" as an insult? It's not civil, and it doesn't contribute to a discussion. I can't be the only one with a deviated septum on here who cringes everytime a poster uses it as a synonym for ignorant. I know we're not exactly a protected minority, but still ... [more inside]
Odd callout: Are people really uncreative that they can't figure out what to add to their grilled cheese sandwich? Its chatfilter. Its beyond chatfilter... Its asking if we can write every itteration of cheese+bread+some special ingredient down. Plus, this has been covered before. Seriously, do we need to overthink a plate of cheese, bread, and butter a second time because someone can't search?
Anonymity, what are the rules exactly? I want to ask a question for a project I'm pitching. If the project gets made it would be under my real-life name, which would allow people to connect me with my screen-name here. I don't really want that to happen. Is that an acceptable use of anonymity? Is there a means to sign up for a second account and somehow say "please note, this isn't a sock puppet"? [more inside]
Matt, I just wanted you to know that the Dawson's Creek version of you (analogy source) has been guest starring in recent episodes of SyFy's "Warehouse 13." Unless it's just me. But the character can spout technobabble at the drop of a hat, and the way they've got the character costumed has been reminding me of those photos I've seen of mathowie. [more inside]
This poster is physically and emotionally abusing her boyfriend!! Why aren't more people picking up on this? [more inside]
why was my AskMeFi response deleted? [more inside]
A while back, I tried to set my Flashgot Firefox plug-in to download all of the files with the address music.metafilter.com/music/*.mp3, only to find that FlashGot doesn't like wildcards, only ranges (i.e. [a-z], [1...1000], etc.). But I really would like to have a quick easy way to suck all of this music onto my iPod. Dear AskMeTa, [more inside]
Calling all football/soccer-inclined MeFites: UEFA Champions League Fantasy Football. Has anyone started a MeFi League? If not, I volunteer to do the honors. [more inside]
A friend of mine has a really embarrassing question. My friend goes into his Mefi mail account and can't find the Compose button to send mefi mail. He's poked around and can't seem to figure it out. What a silly friend. Anyhow if there is someone who can help out my friend that would be great. My friend would really appreciate it.
Any interest in starting a metafilter Minecraft server? Either creative or (the still very buggy) survival mode?
Cool Papa Bell gets another (uncredited) shout-out. [more inside]
Mods are mods, obviously--people with admin rights on the site. Mods are also users who sometimes toss in comments in threads speaking just as themselves. So say I want to send mail to a particular moderator as a mod--specifically, to request a cleanup that that particular mod's actions made more needful than it previously was. Mefi Mail? Not Mefi Mail? [more inside]
So I have an article that I want to post, but the article is essentially a question regarding how people read. Abebooks had a blog post about it and the Guardian picked up on this issue as well. Should I post this on MetaFilter or under AskMefi? No matter where I post it, people will offer up their own preferences for how they read a book. As I see it, this post would be more appropriate in the Green, but I'm not certain.
The "New" Flag doesn't seem to be working right for me. A typical day in the life of Stagger Lee: I'll read a thread, leave and come back. Now it says "25 new!" Oh good! 25 posts to read! I'll read them and go back to the main page. But oh no! It still says "25 new!" And from there, the "new" number seems to grow, but rarely shrink. In short: the "new" flag doesn't seem to notice when I've actually read a post, and just displays all recent activity as new. Is this a browser problem? A me-fi problem? A mental problem? Thanks!
What is the penchant for asking immigration law-related questions on AskMe? Immigration laws are very complex; the only answer should be "speak with an immigration lawyer." Is there any practical reason these questions are asked, but not deleted, on AskMe? See this, for example.
The thread for people in Toronto (and elsewhere) to complain about people in Toronto complaining about the airshow...inspired by this thread. [more inside]
How can I create an RSS feed out of the 7 day popular favorites page on the Blue? If that's not a feature, well, there's my pony request.
I love the idea of this Ask post, but is there any way to modify some of the answers so this poor person/couple doesn't get spammed like crazy? [more inside]
I must organize. My favorites. This house is a pigsty. [more inside]
Have any thought ever been given to creating a "Help a Mefite in Need" space on the site? [more inside]
It's time for the MeFi Fantasy Basketball league! [more inside]
Strangely, this deleted post, which meant to confirm the death of the long storied Duke Nukem franchise occured on the same day as the first concrete information that the Duke lives on emerges from the Penny-Arcade Expo (PAX) [more inside]
Follow-up: Remember the Long Match? The Smithsonian's American History Museum has acquired John Isner's racquet from that match. (Also: Xan Brooks' live blog for the Guardian) [more inside]
Flagging this post as 'fantastic' doesn't seem appropriate, so I just want to say that the outpouring of compassion, caring and genuine feeling makes me really happy to be part of this community. [more inside]
MeFites can post their music to MetaFilter Music and be critiqued. I would love it if the same could be done for prose and poetry. [more inside]
I'm looking for a video I'm pretty sure I saw linked in a comment either on the blue or the green. It was a humorous music video about the singer's dislike for vanilla sex and their preference for loving of the anal variety. [more inside]
Restricting user RSS feeds to specific tags? [more inside]
Sneak Peek at a new feature. Looking for work? Post your job availability at Jobs. [more inside]
I asked a question in AskMe about a story I'm writing, now the story is pretty much finished, and I'd like to share -- just in case anyone is interested. But I'm not sure how. [more inside]
Yesterday, this post about the Discovery hostage-taking was edited (with the poster's permission) by Matt. The main result of editing was to remove the term "batshit insane" and the batshitinsane tag. I have mixed feelings about this. Is the term so offensive (presumably, to sanity-challenged folks) as to be unusable? If so, should it even be allowed as a tag? [more inside]
Last night this post was deleted at the poster's request. It seems from the context within the post that the poster probably requested deletion because the discussion wasn't going the way he imagined it would. Something about asking to have a post deleted for that reason rubs me the wrong way. [more inside]
When I log out of my regular account and log back in as a sock, I have to re-find the post in order to comment on it. [more inside]
How do you link to a comment, not a page? [more inside]
An old, yet already publicized AskMe thread was mentioned today in The Daily Texan (University of Texas newspaper). [more inside]

Articulating myself better on the blue, and elsewhere [more inside]
I'm looking for an AskMe comment about budgeting. The commenter described a budgeting system in which all income was immediately paid into a category, so the final balance was $0. [more inside]
Sept. 2010 distance challenge now up for the MetaFilter group at Runner+. Please join in! [more inside]
Some of the more interesting or emotional questions and discussions on AskMe leave me wanting a final follow-up from the original poster. How did it all turn out? [more inside]
