"You hit your favorite limit for the day." - I'm getting this message a lot today, though I "only" have 30-40 favorites. I thought the limit was 100 or so ...

Pony request: On the front pages of each site (MeFi, AskMe, etc.), would it be possible to change the little plus-es to little minus-es when you add a post as a favorite? Or is there a reason this won't work/is a bad idea?

I remember reading a comment on why the standard recommendation of "voting with your wallet" if you want to see political and/or economic change is bad/bullshit/bogus (in the opinion of the poster). My MeFi-fu is failing me. Please help?

tl;dr? MeFi readers are apparently not as engaged as Facebook or BoingBoing readers: "I would have expected MetaFilter readers to hang around [and read the article] and Boing Boing users to quickly move along; but actually the opposite is the case."

As far as I can tell, there's three factors at play with deleted posts – moderator opinion, initial crowd opinion (comments), and initial crowd opinion (flagging). And I'm kind of seeking to understand how it interplays,

Tiny pony request. On the AskMe front page, a question has a green checkmark next to it if any of the answers has been marked "best answer." If you look at your own history of AskMe coments, there's a green checkmark next to any of your AskMe answers that was marked "best answer." In that same history of your AskMe comments, why not have a green checkmark next to the title of any question in which there have been "best answers"
by anyone else? [more inside]

What comprises the total hardware used in delivering to us our beloved MetaFilter? Not just the main server, but also any personal electronics a mod might use to regulate.

In two recent AskMe threads (
Non obvious things you shouldn't say to women and
a similar about men), vague and general questions were asked. The community response wandered all over the map from
very good, to not so good, where individual dislikes were conflated to be something all of certain subgroup dislke (
1,
2).
I think this is a problem that not only degrades the tone of the site in general and AskMe in particular, but also can confuse the asker. So I'm putting this issue before the community to see if the community views this as a problem and if so, discuss ways to mitigate it.

In Google Reader breaks in text are displaying as brbr and single quotes are not appearing. This is in Firefox and in Chrome (Win7) but not on my phone (Palm Pre).

What are you all saying that
poor Jessamyn has to keep deleting in
this thread? Also, women of Metafilter, are men you don't know actually speculating to you about your bra size and suggesting your mood is reflective of your menstrual cycle?

The front page of Ask MetaFilter contains JavaScript which references the Federated Media ad server
dynamic.fmpub.net. However, the ad server reports that it is should no longer be used.

Can we collectively agree to stop using "mouth breather" as an insult?
It's not civil, and it doesn't contribute to a discussion.
I can't be the only one with a deviated septum on here who cringes everytime a poster uses it as a synonym for ignorant. I know we're not exactly a protected minority, but still ...

Odd callout: Are people really uncreative that they can't figure out what to add to their
grilled cheese sandwich? Its chatfilter. Its beyond chatfilter... Its asking if we can write every itteration of cheese+bread+some special ingredient down. Plus, this has been covered
before. Seriously, do we need to overthink a plate of cheese, bread, and butter a second time because someone can't search?

Anonymity, what are the rules exactly?
I want to ask a question for a project I'm pitching. If the project gets made it would be under my real-life name, which would allow people to connect me with my screen-name here. I don't really want that to happen.
Is that an acceptable use of anonymity?
Is there a means to sign up for a second account and somehow say "please note, this isn't a sock puppet"?

A while back, I tried to set my Flashgot Firefox plug-in to download all of the files with the address
music.metafilter.com/music/*.mp3, only to find that FlashGot doesn't like wildcards, only ranges (i.e. [a-z], [1...1000], etc.). But I really would like to have a quick easy way to suck all of this music onto my iPod. Dear AskMeTa,

A friend of mine has a really embarrassing question. My friend goes into his Mefi mail account and can't find the Compose button to send mefi mail. He's poked around and can't seem to figure it out. What a silly friend. Anyhow if there is someone who can help out my friend that would be great. My friend would really appreciate it.

Mods are mods, obviously--people with admin rights on the site. Mods are also users who sometimes toss in comments in threads speaking just as themselves. So say I want to send mail to a particular moderator
as a mod--specifically, to request a cleanup that that particular mod's actions made more needful than it previously was. Mefi Mail? Not Mefi Mail?

So I have an article that I want to post, but the article is essentially a question regarding how people read.
Abebooks had a blog post about it and the
Guardian picked up on this issue as well. Should I post this on MetaFilter or under AskMefi? No matter where I post it, people will offer up their own preferences for how they read a book. As I see it, this post would be more appropriate in the Green, but I'm not certain.

The "New" Flag doesn't seem to be working right for me.
A typical day in the life of Stagger Lee:
I'll read a thread, leave and come back. Now it says "25 new!" Oh good! 25 posts to read! I'll read them and go back to the main page. But oh no! It still says "25 new!" And from there, the "new" number seems to grow, but rarely shrink.
In short: the "new" flag doesn't seem to notice when I've actually read a post, and just displays all recent activity as new.
Is this a browser problem? A me-fi problem? A mental problem?
Thanks!

What is the penchant for asking immigration law-related questions on AskMe? Immigration laws are very complex; the only answer should be "speak with an immigration lawyer."
Is there any practical reason these questions are asked, but not deleted, on AskMe?
See
this, for example.

this post as 'fantastic' doesn't seem appropriate, so I just want to say that the outpouring of compassion, caring and genuine feeling makes me really happy to be part of this community.

I'm looking for a video I'm pretty sure I saw linked in a comment either on the blue or the green. It was a humorous music video about the singer's dislike for vanilla sex and their preference for loving of the anal variety.

Yesterday,
this post about the Discovery hostage-taking was edited (with the poster's permission) by Matt. The main result of editing was to remove the term "batshit insane" and the batshitinsane tag. I have mixed feelings about this. Is the term so offensive (presumably, to sanity-challenged folks) as to be unusable? If so, should it even be allowed as a tag?

Last night
this post was deleted at the poster's request. It seems from the context within the post that the poster probably requested deletion because the discussion wasn't going the way he imagined it would. Something about asking to have a post deleted for that reason rubs me the wrong way.
