Any mefites playing on Silvermoon, by the way? I've been absent from the game for the last six months, but started playing again last week. However, my main character is a 39 Priest and it's basically no fun anymore unless I group. Besides which, I need to group and do SM. (And I'm unguilded and, as a priest, approaching 40, am getting lots of solicitations. But I don't know these people, darnit.)
Sadly, it looks like the mefites guild we started on Shadowsong is dormant. I never developed a higher-level character over there.

Why is it that WoW is absent the stigma associated with Everquest, or any of its offspring?

The stigma is still there but...also, could it be because WoW has over 1M subscribers in the US alone? Or something equally as amazing?
By the way, anyone interested in very erudite, sometimes very academic, discussion of the sociology, economics, and other issues related to MMOGs/Virtual Worlds, I highly recommend Terra Nova, where Richard Bartle is one of the bloggers and Raph Koster makes a frequent appearance, among many other luminaries.
Additionally, and perhaps I should build a FPP on this topic (but I would expect one to already exist), but the story of Anshe Chung on Second LIfe is eye-popping and jaw-dropping both directly and in what it represents.

because a lot of the EQ paranoia stems from the fact that, being a miserably bad game, the people who obsessed over it tended to be... interesting.
WoW has been widely adopted across a number of different demographics. Sort of unprecedented for an MMO, frankly. it's getting to that point, now, though, where mostly the hardcore play it. it may develop that EQ shunning, soon.
EB, how is it that your story is almost identical to mine? I'm not on your server, but i stopped playing about 6 months ago (lost my job) started up again a week ago (new job), have a level 34 priest that never gets to group because almost everyone on my server is level 60. I don't get the invites for the above reason that you seem to be getting, but still...

Dunno. I quit playing just because I got bored with it. I've been a gamer all my life, but never an obsessive gamer, for some reason. Stupidly, however, considering that I am extraordinarily poor, I kept my sub going. Just what Blizzard wants, eh?
But, yeah, I sure have noticed a big difference in the population mix with regard to levels now related to six months ago. It's amazing how lopsided it is to Lvl 60 chars. When I've played during the evening in the last week, however, there's been a bit more varied mix and that's when I've gotten invites. People pretty much always want priests in their groups, that's one advantage to playing that class. I've had fun soloing it, though. Shadowspec works out for soloing well. But I find I am very weary of soloing; it just seems like the grind. Grouping in an instance, however, has always been fun for me; well, except for when it hasn't been because of some schmuck(s) who ruin(s) it for the whole group.

Heh. Nope, not me. I don't play WoW. Although I will be your private dancer, your dancer for money, if you ask nicely.
(I'm waiting for Quake 4 next week with bated breath, though, and hoping that there'll be an RA4 mod for it if it doesn't suck. I still hop onto Korean RA3 servers to get my beery ass handed to me once in a while on Friday nights.)

I can't say I ever "got" the attraction of EverCrack... er, EverQuest, but it still makes more sense to me than The Sims.

The Sims sounded great to me in theory but completely bored me in practice. Which is not too unusual for me with games. I've always been more interested in computer gaming in general than I am in actually playing the damn things. Which is just way, way too weird. I was at a party with a bunch of Austin game devs one night and I completely fit in with regard to industry gossip and other insider discussion.
However, I have to admit that age is finally catching up with me as gaming becomes less and less interesting as I've approached and passed 40. Which I think is kind of a shame.

Mind you, people had enjoyable social experiences ANYWAY, but largely due to their own determination and good will.
However, you'll find as many conflicing opinions about the quality of EQ and EQ2 as you'll find people who played them. So take it as my $.02.

I was playing on autopilot for about 3 months there...basically using a series of home-brew mods to freak the AH system and make a ton of cash. My druid over on Llane still has over 10k in gold.
Then, they opened the new RP-PvP servers. I joined a Cult. Basically, it's a group of about 200 people from SomethingAwful.com that decided to play the RP aspect to the hilt. We have strange things going on all the time. On more than one occasion, we've had mass suicides off the cliffs overlooking Ratchet. Good times, good times.
I've been so entertained by this, that I've been blogging about it from the standpoint of my character. Pimp.

I played EQ for about a year. I quit for various reasons - boredom, hard to group, etc. I started WoW a couple weeks ago. I hope it works out.
