Thursday NYC meetup: If the MTA is still striking, should we reschedule? If so, what day should we reschedule for?
posted by Afroblanco to MetaFilter Gatherings at 8:31 AM (65 comments total)

I can't make it if the strike is still going on, but I think those of you can should have a meetup for the rest of us.
posted by ThePinkSuperhero at 8:34 AM on December 20, 2005 [1 favorite]

Plus, we can't really discuss rescheduling until we know the strike madness is over.

We could make backup neighbourhood meetup plans. Let's say the strike's still on Thursday, then Manhattan's good for its one, people in various parts of Brookly, Queens, The Bronx and Staten Island can then attend their own?
posted by Captaintripps at 8:41 AM on December 20, 2005

Ooooo that would be fun- mini Astoria meetup! I'm sure by then, if the strike is still on, I will *desperately* need to get out of my house.

striking on the weekend would be good. :)
posted by Gigglecam at 8:45 AM on December 20, 2005

Since I live "way the hell up and gone" on 117th I may not be able to make it (unless Plutor, or nomad want to drive in and drive downtown to the meetup?)
posted by splatta at 8:46 AM on December 20, 2005

Just to note: it's in my hood, so I can still make it at the scheduled time, regardless.

Otherwise - I can reschedule any time except the weekend.

(CBS) NEW YORK The international arm of the Transport Workers Union is stunned and angry that its Local 100, representing New York subway and bus workers, turned down a contract offer from management and ordered its members to walk off their jobs, CBS2 News has learned.
Sources within other large public employee unions tell CBS2 reporter Marcia Kramer that the TWU's international leadership is considering taking over the local and seeking a settlement with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.
Those sources say the upper level of the TWU thinks the MTA's latest offer is fair and worthy of further consideration and negotiation. They stand against a militant faction within Local 100 that pressed hard for a strike.

Why would I cross my fingers for a settlement to a two-tier system? If they're gonna ruin my birthday, I hope they get something for it.

I might come to the meetup since it's near the bridge, but I don't know.

mini-'hood meetups would be cool. rescheduling would also be ok. but, yeah, those that can, should!

...I plan to be in manhattan regardless -- thursday night, 11pm, mr. yee's (basement of l'asso) -- my friend crystal dawn (think janis joplin, mary lou lord, etc.) is going to be singing her heart out and causing a big commotion. with another good friend on drums. all-y'all are welcome. (cover is 5 bucks or 2 bucks or some similar pittance)

(nb: I would be happy to pay the cover for anyone who wants to come along, 'cos crystal is that good.)

I'm still up for the meetup, even with a reduced turnout. But we could also have an early-January meetup (so everyone going away for the holidays will be back by then) to pick up the slack. More drinking = more fun! :)
posted by dotreptile at 9:36 AM on December 20, 2005

Yaaay, the more drinking, the better!

drinking is good. prolific meetup photos of various secondary sexual characteristics: also good.

metatalk: meetup all you want, we'll make more.

If I'm gonna walk from Rego Park, I'm gonna go all the way to Manhattan, who wants to walk to Astoria? (No offense, I like Astoria, but I want my walk to at least include a sense of adventure which bridge crossings would have.)

StickyCarpet is working on mega-excellent plans for January. Keep your calendars free!
posted by CunningLinguist at 10:23 AM on December 20, 2005

Feel free to walk to Manhattan, riffola, but I'm sure as hell not walking that far in the cold. No siree Bob!

I'm siiiiiiick. Hopefully the Benadryl will kick in soon.

I think I'll be in manhattan anyway, though maybe by thursday I'll be sick enough of bridges not to bother...? If I am around I will come by, if someone will repost the details. Considering how many people made it last time, an edited-down guest list could still be a party....

this giant ape, can it ice skate? or is it more of the garden variety 'cavort, break thru the ice and drown us all' type? 'cos either way is good for me.

(previously I might have cast paris as the ape, 'cept now we all know pp is a hot cambodian girl. or some junk...)

also: amber, as you are the unofficial official sweetheart of mefi, whachoo talkin bout willisdogg.

kosem: strangely enough, there was one more egg hiding in the bottom of the jar. I have been afraid to eat it, but I am equally afraid to attempt taking it out of the house as it will either simply melt in a gross fashion in my hands, elst take over the galaxy. hard to say which. but we still need to plan the chip shop documentary trip for sometime in the next few months.

and for kate, sweet sweet kate, I promise not to take any more-inappropriate-than-usual photos, unless of course jonmc is there with his forkéd devil's tongue.

So, I'm thinking that we should go ahead and have the meetup on Thursday, strike notwithstanding. If the transport workers are still striking on Thursday, I wouldn't be opposed to declaring an additional meetup for next week.

What do you guys say?

I would love to finally make it to one of these things. I will be driving in from CT. Is parking impossible around there?
posted by crack at 7:54 PM on December 20, 2005

I'll come, but my new rule is to show up for 10 minutes and split. That way no one gets sick of me.
right?

Is parking impossible around there?

Not particularly. There are several lots in the area. (you can do a Google Local on parking 10002.) Also, it is quite possible that you will find a meter.
posted by Afroblanco at 8:12 PM on December 20, 2005

Thanks Afroblanco.

Anyone going to be there early? Since I'll be driving in all the way from eastern CT, I thought I'd leave and arrive before traffic acts up. Also: Any recommendations for where to kill time nearby? A vegetarian eatery would be nice.
posted by crack at 4:02 AM on December 21, 2005

I plan to get there a little after 6, sorries crack -- yesterday and today I am not venturing out of brooklyn, but tomorrow I will get my lazy carcase over to work by hook or by crook; after which I plan to pick up some tastey banh mi (2nd & a) around 6pm and then walk down to 151.

but I might leave work early. or it may take me hours to get down there from ues. who the hell knows.

all the tasteyest places I know in the les are not exactly vegetarian. angelica kitchen ~union sq is pretty decent tho.

... also, I'd be happy to ditch work early if you want to come pick me up at the museum ^_^
posted by dorian at 5:50 AM on December 21, 2005

also also, in any case I think you may need to make sure you drive into manhattan higher than 96th to avoid the 4 person per car thingy.
posted by dorian at 5:52 AM on December 21, 2005

I believe the 4 person per car thing is just until 11AM.

Also, I think they have checkpoints at 96th St. as well as at the bridges and tunnels, so before 11AM any car coming south from Bronx/Harlem will need 4 passengers as well.

ah, venice.
posted by dorian at 6:09 AM on December 21, 2005

Yup, from 5 to 11, a car need 4 people coming from everywhere. I was in a cab (with 5) from Queens, and they were turning people around before they got on the 59th St Bridge.

I might make it tomorrow after all- if I come to the office, mine as well stay in the city for a little fun!
posted by ThePinkSuperhero at 6:40 AM on December 21, 2005 [1 favorite]

I can probably pick up folks along the way (but it will have to be earlier). Dorian email me if you decide you want to ditch work early and get dinner. I'll give you my contact info.
posted by crack at 7:26 AM on December 21, 2005

crack, where in CT are you driving from? I'm going to be coming from Stamford, would it make sense to carpool?
posted by nomad at 9:14 AM on December 21, 2005

Nomad, I'm coming from the Uconn area (east of Hartford). I'm on my way to NJ for the holidays so I won't be driving back into CT tomorrow night. I would be happy to pick you up if you have some other way of getting back home.
posted by crack at 10:57 AM on December 21, 2005

Nah, that wouldn't make much sense. Thanks for the offer though.

I can't make this meetup, but if any Brooklynites (or those who want to trek to Williamsburg) want to meetup, I plan to be drinking there Friday evening. Also, if there's a meetup in January later than the 7th, I do believe you can count me in. I should make at least one of these before school kicks back in.

Not to mention that now I'm positively dying to meet Nobody and his vibrator...

So who's going tonight? I was going to blow it off because it's such a pain to get downtown, but I've had something canceled every night since the strike started and I'm getting cabin fever. I haven't tried to brave the cab situation yet, but will if anyone is still going....
