Favorites broken? October 18, 2006 5:17 PM   Subscribe

Is favorites broken? They don't seem to be showing up reliably in the my favorites page, and sometimes the favorites tag on the comment itself isn't incremented. A little more inside.

Example: I accidently favorited this and it's not showing up in my favorites, making removal impossible.

I just favorited that too, to test, and both of ours seem to have been registered. Mine shows up on my favorites page. However, the post still says "1 user saved as favorite", so there may be some caching of the page going on that doesn't get flushed until a new comment is added.

(I'm going to remove that favorite now, so don't freak).

Well, the message updated a few seconds later without any new comments having been added, so the caching may be time based. Still, it's working for me.

Yeah, it shows I've favorited it on the comment itself, I can click on it and it shows the link to my profile, but my favorites doesn't show it.

Yeah, there's an issue with all the favorites reporting. The # of favorites is cached, updating only once every 10 minutes or so. So you click save as a favorite and it won't increment the counter and won't show up on your favorites page until ten minutes or so passes.

I'll fix this tomorrow when I'm working on a bunch of code things. Also, I see you as the only person that favorited that post. Maybe it's more than 10 minutes, but I'll fix it tomorrow so the updating is instant.

Thanks Matt. Not world-shakingly important or anything but I've noticed it going on for a while.

What, no snarkfest from the peanut gallery? You guys are losing your touch. Seriously, you sucka MCs couldn't snark your way out of a soggy Fark beerfest!

That's better, but I was hoping for a little harsh invective thrown my way, y'know? It's brisk and refreshing, like a sound slap in the face with a palmful of aftershave.

Just grab the "remove" URL from a different favorite (from the same subdomain), and then change the id# to the post or comment you'd like removed.

http://www.metafilter.com/contribute/remove_favorite.mefi?sitetype_id=n&link_id=x

Where n = the site id (1 for a MeFi post, 2 for a comment; 3 for Ask, 4 for a comment; 5 for MeTa, 6 for a comment on same) and x is the id for the event/comment/post/datum/wahtevre.

Give it 30 seconds; Plutor will probably have a Greasemonkey script that fixes this.

Oh, and you smell wonderful and are so handsome, loq. You bastard.

Man, you make me ashamed to believe I'm a nerd. Thanks. And I asked for a brisk slap in the face, not gratuitous sexing.

Ok, that appears to have worked, but I'd suggest that no one else uses it until Matt gives a nod of assent - though it briefly showed the "comment removed" page, it also seemed to throw my browser into a very rapid refresh loop, which can't be good for the server.

Well, shit. And here I thought you really liked that post. Now my karma favourite count has gone down!

Sorry, no. I was trying to flag that post when I favorited it. Don't take it personally, but I dislike the post immensely. It's bad, sensationalistic journalism to start*, and posting it here just makes me loath the erroneously reported* story even more.

(*Said story is not the first time someone has picked a fight over the internet or computer-based telecom du jour. Dumbasses did that even back in BBS days. I even have a tale involving several angry nerds, a incident of break-and-enter and the wanton usage of a "bulk magnetic media eraser" upon inside said residence. Hell, so-called "elite hackers" used to physically visit the homes of "leechers" and "rodents" to send artificial power spikes (via stun-gun or capacitor bank, same difference) down their phone lines to fry their modems and/or computers.)
