Naw, it's just that there's this dumb hacky way we add our usernames to deletion reasons, and it's basically that I can't edit the post without adding my name to it. I didn't write the reason but I edited it after deletion to remove the douchebag's URL, so yeah my name got tacked on after cortex's.

This has really been the day for deleted posts, hasn't it? At least nine so far.

And given that deleted posts are always linked from elsewhere, I like the idea of changing the link. Otherwise the self-linkers would still be rewarded for their SEO activities.

I was sort of amused at the explicit callout in the deletion reason. It will let anyone know who and why without a lot of internet-detective activity needed.

Its subconscious intimidation. The goal is to deter said linker from signing up another account and doing it again. Awesome.

Yeah, honestly? We do this a lot. It's kind of a weird inter-mod negotiation thing: "Oh, shit, I overwrote your deletion reason..." "No, no, yours is better—" "But it was just so—" "No, really, it's for the best!"

This is apropos of what?

You know that old joke that ends with the Jew in the confessional saying to the priest, "I'm telling everybody!"?

So what will it take for the infamous triple banning?

For anybody wondering how, exactly, this happens collision happens:

Any given one of us finds out about a problematic post. It might be from visiting the flag queue, or from an email from someone, or a "HEY CORTEX CLEANUP IN AISLE 69903" message in irc; or it might be (as in this case) from an automatic email alert about a first post going up.

However we find out about it, one of us clicks through to the thread, checks it out, and then (presuming it need deletin'), deletes it.

If a second one of us loads the thread before the first one actually committed the deletion, the thread looks undeleted. And so the second one deletes it. And so we end up with two deletions, one overwriting the other when the hammer gets dropped.

To get the vaunted triple, we'd have to have all three mods load the thread before the first one on the scene managed to get the deletion done; all three would see an undeleted thread, all three would be in a position to go blammo thinking it still needed doing.

So what would it take?

Probably it'd be a first post -- we know about those more or less instantly, before anyone else has had a chance to react (by emailing us, or starting a metatalk thread [which we'd also get an alert for], or flagging the hell out of the thing).

Probably it'd be a really clearcut piece of crap—blatant self-link, extremely misguided attempt at a post, that sort of thing. It wouldn't require significant looking into, basically: we'd know at a glance that it had to go.

Definitely all three of us would have to see the alert at more or less the same moment; we'd have to all be at our respective computers when the mail came in. Hardly implausible, but not something that's true around the clock.

And we'd need to all decide not to refresh the thread and see if, in fact, it's been nixed already by someone else. Which isn't foolproof, because it doesn't eliminate the condition of uncertainty, but it's a hedge. Generally, we care more about getting rid of bad content than we do about not accidentally overwriting someone else's deletion reason, though, so it's not something we worry too much about.
posted by cortex (staff) at 8:34 AM on March 15, 2008 [3 favorites]

(And yeah, to be clear: this was a triple. And Jessamyn's deletion reason was a little bit more conversational and metanarrative-y then the ones Matt and I went with. And the double-tagging at the end of a deletion thing like here is actually preventable if you got to some extra wonky effort to format it correctly, but to Matt's credit he's not nearly as anal about that kind of ridiculous thing as I am and so we get the duplex attribution on the final reason.

It's also evidence, as far as that goes, that in this case he went and knowingly edited, rather than race-condition overwrote, my deletion reason, so while it's literally a double-delete move it's not a comical head-bonking accidental double delete. That's what me and Jess did before he got there.)

Macallan 25? So we're not in a recession?

Well, at least some parts of the finance/insurance industry are doing okay, I guess. Wife's place had its annual party, at a nice Billiards club this year. It wasn't so much that they were serving Macallan 25 so much as that it was an open bar that, unlike basically every other open bar I've been to, didn't have a stripped-down selection. They just, you know, had the bar completely open. The Mac 25 was a consolation prize, because they'd run out of Glenlivet 18. I was, in fact, consoled.

Later, I went out for a bacon maple bar.

When I found out that they had The Macallan 25, I told the waiter to put my bar bill on a separate tab, and had a couple of doubles (we were all drinking). Back in the late '70s I was living, broke and happy, in New Haven, working minimum wage jobs and hanging out with as worthless a collection of drunken reprobates as you'd ever hope to see. (New Haven and Inishmaan are the only two places I've had to stop and puke along the roadside as I made my way home at night from my watering hole of choice.) The most worthless and drunken of these reprobates was a fellow who went by the moniker of Snakey. One day—don't ask me how—he managed to get himself hired as a bartender at Gypsy, the grad-student bar/hangout. When he told the rest of us, we flat out refused to believe him. He was quite hurt and said to show up that evening and we'd see he was telling the truth. We duly showed up, and lo and behold, there was Snakey, resplendent in a white jacket and proud as could be. And whenever we ordered the cheap well liquor to which our wallets were suited, he gave us nice brimming glasses of Glenlivet (which was at the time the only single-malt Scotch normally available in US bars). We tipped him well. He was fired the next day.

All he sells for is gold
But he's climbing a stairway to bannin'
When he gets done he knows
That the thread will be closed
With five bucks he can get what he came for
Ooh, ooh, and he's buying a stairway to bannin'

There's a sign on the page
That he wants to ignore
'Cause he knows it's worth the Google rankings.
On a post to the blue
There's a poster who shills,
Hoping clicks to his page will be driven.
Ooh, it makes me wonder,
Ooh, it makes me wonder.

There's a feeling I get
When I click on the link,
And see that it's crying for flagging.
In the thread I will see
Detective Squads unleashed.
And comments of those who start flaming.
Ooh, it makes me wonder,
Ooh, it really makes me wonder.

If it's called out too soon
Then the flames will not bloom
Because the mods will close the damn thread down.
And the post will be locked
To the rest of our thoughts
And we won't get to tell off the spammer.

If there's a post gone from your frontpage
Don't be alarmed now
It's just a quick clean by the mod team.
Yes, they can spend the five and re-buy
But in the long run
They'll be ignored, flamed, banned and gone.
And it makes me wonder.

A good post is worthy and it won't go
In case you don't know
If posters are not a self-linker.
Dear reader, did you see that link go?
And did you know?
T'was posted by the original author.

There'll be more posts down the road
That will shill blogs that we don't know
Or try to bilk us of our dough
But we all know the quid pro quo.
How ban hammers will take their toll
While scammers will try very hard
To slip an advertisement past.
When can we be safe and know that
It is a post and not a shill.

'cuz they're buying a stairway to bannin'.
