I just created a metafilter group on Google Plus. Just search for 'metafilter' under 'communities'.
I don't know if anyone still uses G+, but just in case, here it is. I've got it on approval required to join and it's a public group. If people would prefer it to be private, I can always delete and recreate. I guess if someone else created one already, here would be the place to announce it and I can kill mine.

it's worth pointing out that if you use the main g+ search bar at the top, you won't find it: that one doesn't search "communities". (google failing at site search... whoda thunk.) You have to go to the G+ Communities page, https://plus.google.com/communities, and use the search bar there under the giant "Get together with Google+ Communities" banner... or just go straight to https://plus.google.com/communities/100779510796382582089.

You can get the regular search to find it by typing "Metafilter," hitting Enter (aka not clicking anything in the pop-up list), and then click the little grey box next to your search term at the top that says "Everything" and choose "Communities" instead, all of which is to say that probably FlyingMonkey's approach is easier.

In addition to what invitapriore says, it also appears in the search results on the right column under "Communities".
So... I'm pretty sure it does appear in search. Although this stuff usually happens as a gradual roll-out, so not everyone may be seeing the same thing yet.

I'm fine with getting a notification in Chrome, but I'd rather not get an e-mail and push notification on the G+ app on my phone every time someone posts. Am I missing the place where I can set it up this way? The only two options I can find are "On" and "Off" for notifications.

I haven't intentionally used G+ in months! Except as photo storage, which, if anyone was wondering, doesn't work well in southeast Asia and you try and try and try to upload but it never even starts it just hangs up on the first screen and eventually you try to use Flickr instead but damn there's a really small limit we're taking pictures of a trip around the WORLD we have way more than 200 here but credit card info for a paid account on this random computer in this random internet cafe in cambodia i don't know about that. Ahem, anyway, perhaps my usage will increase now. What do people do on the Plus these days anyway?

Melismata, the on/off button is below the big MF, to the right of the "Actions" dropdown. The button has a bell on it, and if you hover over it a popup will say "Turn notifications for this community on or off here."

Since Communities are such a new feature, maybe there'll be the option at some point down the road to change the setting of the community to private without having to recreate it from the ground up.

I use G+ every day and have made a ton of new friends there and it has enabled me to work on creative projects that wouldn't really have been possible any other way so it is a successful platform for me, at least.

Weird that there's no support for Communities in the G+ Android app yet. Also the you can't seem to turn off the email notifications without turning off all the notifications for the group.

I'm not really worried about notifications, as I used a dormant personal account for this.
I actually do like G+'s format over Facebook's, to be honest, so it's nice to have a reason to go there.

Having to approve people to join the group reminds me of Google's dumb naming policy. I have not idea if most of the people being approved are Mefites, because they're names different from the ones they've been known as.
There's graduate or Phd paper that could be written about all of this, I'm sure.

By popular request, we're going to make the group private. This involves adding everyone in the group to a circle, deleting the current group, making a new one and then inviting everyone to the newly created group.
They'll probably take place sometime later tonight, so just sit tight and do whatever you do when sitting quietly.
