WHAT HO MODS!

Yeah, New England Unix nerds, please come work for me in Rhode Island and we'll see if we can't make that particular job a MeFite two-in-a-row. :7)

I thought it was always "ruin porn". Not heard it termed as "disaster porn". Maybe it's a regionalism.

Great pod episode.

Thanks for the shoutout! I originally started that blog just to publish my pig butchering write-up and figured that would be it, but lately I started using it to keep track of recipes I've been developing. Hopefully there will be more of this kind of thing; I don't want to get too preachy in what I write, but it's fascinating to me how we get the food that we eat and the surprising availability of local product. The fact that I can get meat that was raised on pasture less than 20 miles outside of downtown Boston is still pretty amazing to me.

Thanks, mods, and thanks to backseatpilot--that was a good, solid write-up (and I would have missed it, if not for this post). Processing is tiring, constant work, and I'm amazed at how well you documented it given the constraints of time and mess. I can't keep a camera on me while working, and there's just no time to take notes, so I really appreciate the effort, and will use it as a review tool before the next go-round. Note to self: Remember to buy craploads of ice. Before you start butchering.

Ooh! That Shirley Jackson book cover page is fantastic! I sent the guy the cover of the Icelandic version of Life Among the Savages.

Wait, "murder"? NO MURDER, NO MURDER! Jesus, you two, I didn't kill anyone! (Though if I did, working at a place with an entire kitchen classroom dedicated to meat processing, and an ID badge that gets me anywhere anytime, all located a few yards from the Bay -- well, I'll say no more...)

And it was ursus_comiter, not Fedward, who worked for me. I would humbly suggest that his current gig is SO ALMIGHTY COOL that it deserves an FPP of its own, but he's so busy having fun and learning stuff and smashing his thumbs that I have scarcely heard from him in weeks. :7)

And that delights me because he was a great colleague for four years, a good hire at the time, and is in a place now where he is apparently having a ball, if his Instagram post from 11 hours ago -- of a handmade mallet, clutched in a fist -- is any indication!

(Also, cortex, thank you for the correct pronunciation of my surname. I tip my hat to you!)

I thought that disaster porn is views of terrible things happening at that time, but ruin porn is more like abandoned sites overgrown with vines and the like.

Wow, I was mentioned again. My brush with greatness.

As an aside to penis graffiti, I was having a conversation with a friend years ago about why it is always a penis and never a vagina that is hastily sketched on skateboard ramps, sidewalks, old library books, etc. I posited that a penis is easy to sketch and is easily recognizable, whereas a vagina is more difficult. She then took a piece of scrap paper and drew a two second vagina sketch on it to prove me wrong. For the past five years or so I have carried that piece of paper in my wallet and asked people to identify it (in proper circumstances, I am not a madman). There is a one hundred percent identification rate, so I have moved onto my new theory: guys are more likely than women to draw genitals on things, and people draw what they know.

I think that is probably true. Some of this stuff looked more like disaster porn but I think I was also just confused. (ahoy from Edmonton!)

Ahaha, I finally made it into the podcasts and it was for a technical snafu. You might be amused to know that I got two suggestions for “have you tried cmd + shift + T” with wildly different tones and it was a neat little infuriating sociological experiment. I also moved a bunch of my ongoing research-oriented tabs into TinyLetter drafts as Jessamyn suggested on Twitter, and now I have 27 drafts.

I had not heard "twat waffle" outside of a very funny episode of Sirens (which I wish was still running).

I'm listening to this! It's a real good "listen to something while do some rare casual late afternoon hacking" experience.

In particular, I liked cortex explaining Metroidvanias to jessamyn. I do think there really should be a Pennsylvania Metroidvania. You could go the Poconos, go to Philadelphia and steal the Liberty Bell, then come back to the Poconos with it and unlock Benjamin Franklin's secret tomb or something!
