Picture, if you will, a web page. On that page, a single link. The text of that link: "Click here to find Metafilter." You click the link. The breath is ripped from your lungs as you are rushed headlong to the Ask Jeeves (UK) search results for the word "metafilter"!

...OK, there's really no way to make this dramatic. But have any other typo-prone users run across metafiler.com?

...That should have gone into MetaFilter-related, not bugs. Sorry.

well, if you do a WHOIS lookup on the domain, and check out the URL on the page, it seems that a guy in the UK is trying to make some affiliate dollars off of the misspelled domain.

I've heard of this for yahoo, amazon, netscape, and google, but never for a stupid site like this. It's lame, but there's not a lot I can do, so it's not really worth worrying about. I seriously doubt the guy makes more in affiliate clicks than he paid for the domain and hosting.

Think of all the dough that the meatfilter guy is missing out on.

Wow, you survived such a traumatic experience. It's a wonder you're still with us.

It's weird that someone starts a thread about this or something closely related to this every month or so. I think if you'd searched MetaTalk you would have found the last one from about a month ago.

Not that I care that much, mind you. Personally, I'm interested in purchasing metafeeler.com and starting my pornography kingdom.

metafeeler.com....hehe.

metafeeler.com: we're all in this together.

I believe this exact site has already been a MeTa topic--and it was deleted by mathowie, which we all know is rare. So, there ya go.

On preview, what The God Complex said.

Don't click that link ... last time someone posted it, it took ages before I trained myself out of the habit of mistakenly going there, every time I typed "meta" into my browser. Damned automatic URL completion ...

walrus - visit the page, then go into your History window (where it should now be the top link), select its URL, and hit delete (or control-delete, or whatever your browser/platform quirks dictate). End of automatic URL completion problem.

About a year ago I considered registering metafilter.co.uk, but failed to see the point, other than to point it straight back here.. or, more deviously, point it at some sort of mock UK version of MeFi. But I realised what a waste of time that would be and didn't bother.

Bizarrely, given the number of UK MeFiers, metafilter.co.uk is still available. Yours for only $5.25 a year folks.
