MetaFilter. MetaFilter. Bored?

I don't remember the circumstances, but I'm pretty sure the first one has been posted here before, a long time ago. Can't find the thread though.

Here. The first two were Matt's, I think. (I'm not stalking your comments, XQ, just avoiding my work.)

So, not so much things to come as things that never came.

New Coke was a bad idea too.

If we need one thing, it's more metronome.

I think those designs are both pretty good, but they could use more cowbell. I gotta have more cowbell!

i like those 2 designs quite a bit... not the colours so much, but the layouts are boss. more suited to a personal site than metafilter tho'. the current utilitarian set up is properly functional, even if it isn't my taste.

Those designs aren't new, I think they've been around for some time. Hasn't everybody already seen them? What am I missing that would make this post make sense?
posted by Hildago at 11:47 AM on May 3, 2003

Wait, I set myself up with that one.

Are those first two jokes? Because they both look, umm... horrible.

Really? How nice of you to say so Commander Tact.

*Me and my links are invisible. Because of our superpowers, we also cannot be seen in the current X-Men movie.* *poof*

The two alternate designs were apparently things Matt played with fairly early on but never used. Then Jack over at Metaphilter found them on the web and wondered if they were new prototypes. And dhartung wondered the same thing. Actually, though, they're old. Like this one. /exposition

Ahh onlyconnect nice of you to join the conversation :)

sorry about that...

I like the second one...

If Matt were to update the current look, I'd vote that he use the second design above.

*Wrestles link away from betaray and jumps around with it shouting "mine, mine, mine," puts on head in manner of tiara*

I will try not to be whiny since it was your thread to start with, betaray. :) (I was joking around, really.)

Because they both look, umm... horrible.

Anybody else think that's an incredibly rude comment to make about Matt's (ya know, the creator of MeFi) designs? Sheesh, XQ. How would you react if someone commented likewise about your own sense of design?
posted by dhoyt at 5:00 PM on May 3, 2003

Be fair, dhoyt - how the hell was XQ to know they were Matt's designs?

Has anyone done a green Metafilter mockup? I like green. What about kitschy seasonal and holiday changes like big brother Google does? I like kitschy seasonal and holiday changes.

"The kitsch [Metafilter]... has aqua-and-white gingham curtains and rubber duck-yellow walls painted in a fried-egg motif" (significanty altered Suzanne Cassidy quote).

how the hell was XQ to know they were Matt's designs?

Well, for starters, they've been discussed in other MeTa threads. Secondly, they're hosted on the frickin' MeFi domain. Thirdly they're located in a folder called /newlook/. I'm no Encyclopedia Brown, but even if I hadn't seen them before I would conclude they were Matt's alternative demo designs for MeFi.

And XQ, it's mind-boggling that you can go back and read your own comment ("Are those first two jokes? Because they both look, umm... horrible") and defend it in a five-paragraph rejoinder rather than simply saying, Yeah, I guess I could've phrased that better. Why not say, "I'm not crazy about them, and here's why", without the dismissive tone? I'm not Commander Tact either much of the time, but you're critiquing the person that built this site you and I are using right now, not some newbie soliciting brutally honest opinions of his first Geocities page.

designing a new look for a website visited by thousands daily would merit feedback

Sure. But it's not like Matt posted the designs to MetaTalk himself and begged for our critiques. They were posted by a third party, most likely without Matt's foreknowledge. It's baffling why the concept of "Don't be a dick to the site admin" should require any elaboration. Geez.

Indeed, criticizing our leader during this time is a sign of disrespect for our values and the brave members who have sacrificed themselves for the good of this community. If you don't like it then you can just move your ungrateful self elsewhere. Why do you hate Metafilter so much?

Ha. Very funny. Good times, good times. Etc. But if someone had posted links to comps of your site, and someone else had given a mean-spirited criticism I'd defend you, too. It sucks to have your work considered "horrible" by a total stranger whose feedback was never requested.

I love how all MetaTalk threads turn to poo after the first eight or nine comments.

Actually, it only took one.

I liked the the second example, except for the metro[g]nome and the color to the right of the metro[g]nome. Actually, a gnome would be better in place of the metronome. Please, I don't want a reminder of my piano lessons! ok, the "metafilter" wordmark needs a rethink. Something more prominent to that background at the top. It's not all bad. Really. Just, parts of it.

I have a bias for 40% Cyan as my corporate brand color is that, so it's all good. It seems fresh and spring like with the lime.

I also liked the original Burninglogs version OTOH. Throw in some acorns and oak leaves! Solid.

Armatron!

I used to have one of those.
posted by Mars Saxman at 1:10 PM on May 4, 2003

those designs are from early 2000, and I never used them because they weren't any better (in many ways, much worse) than the original design.

There were others I made as a joke, like the propaganda one. I distinctly remember Ev Williams begging me to replace the blue metafilter with this yellow one.

For the record, I don't care too much if people love or hate these designs, you're simply getting a peek at my sketchbook. They were never made live because they weren't quite up to snuff, and after four years with the same design (though these were all made back in early 2000), I strongly doubt I'll ever change the site greatly.
