Too Many iPod Ads-as-Posts December 13, 2004 11:05 AM   Subscribe

I don't care about your damn iPod products. We've had like a billion iPod-related avertisments as posts on this site in like the last few months? Can we stop advertising for the iPod? How about it?

But don't you understand that the iPod *is* the cultural revolution we've been waiting for? It's individuality, entertainment, coolness, and high technology all in a teensy little can that only costs a week's wages! How can we possibly stem the tide of information about how to further enjoy this soul-staisfying consumer product, which brings happiness, good luck, and long life to all who buy it?

Why do you hate the revolution, xmutex?

iPod My Photo sells iPods? I didn't see that link on their page. Could you direct me to it?

Seriously, you've got to be kidding me. This is a bunch of humans who will do this BY HAND and then email it back to you? How retarded is that? For twenty bucks? Someone's little brother is making a fortune with his pirate copy of photoshop.

If this were a web tool or something that did this automagically, for free, that might be kinda interesting. What we have here is some money-grubbing smartasses with passable photoshop skills who want to cash in on the iPod mania. Yes, linking to them is a pathetic shill.

(The site is crap, btw, I'm just suggesting in an overly snarky manner that it has nothing to do with the fact that it's iPod related.)

I have noticed the tendency of iPod owners (myself included) to gush about how great iPods are and how everyone should go out and buy one immediately. I've sold at least two people on them that I know of. Make a product good enough and useful enough, and your customers will go out of their way to push your products for you.

That said, ad posts suck. Especially one-line ad posts with no context and relatively little content.

(Sometimes I catch myself looking at other people's headphones on the bus to see if they're the Apple kind. Do I need help?)

Develop a rabid and sheepish fanbase enough, and avoid having to include the more impressive features of your competitors. Or for that matter, lower your outlandish asking price.

Looks like you took it to the grey before I even mentioned it. Good work.

Since you think i'm shilling for ipod, I guess nothing I'll say could convince you otherwise so I won't even bother. I will say however, that I'm pretty sure some people find it interesting and might even like it. You seem to have a vendetta with Apple or something.

I suppose since it is a pay service that the fpp is advertising, so it is a candidate for deletion.

I am a PowerBook user. I own an iPod. I don't want to see iPod advertisments or iPod-related advertisments on MetaFilter. I think all these three statements are consistent.

I also enjoy naps. And the color blue.

I am very suspicious of the growing trend towards product placement here, and can support smackdowns for all who toe that line. I don't give a damn how cool it is, if it ain't a titanium spork it is not the best of the web.

I'm a Mac guy, I use my iPod nearly every waking minute of every day and I think these iPod Pepsi Blue ads posts are annoying as hell.

And yes, this coming from a guy who just posted an old Snopes debunked story about a guy who made his wife into a coffee table.

did not see this post as an ad for ipod; it was just like here's what these shmucks are doing. And chargin 20 bucks for...

puke & cry - I don't think this is the worst example of an iPod-shilling post ever. But really, think about how lame it is to charge people to photoshop their pictures and make them look like an ad campaign. This operation is very likely in copyright violation and their offering is nothing special in terms of technology. Basically, it's a scam. Someone already posted a tutorial on how to do it yourself in Photoshop. It is someone's business venture, and you are no doubt helping them by sending them new visitors, even though their service is lame and possibly illegal.

Now think about this: do you really want to give these jokers traffic? Is that what you think MetaFilter is for? Can you really not do better than this?

I'm pretty sure some people find it interesting and might even like it.

Hahahaha. Thanks for summing up my feelings on the matter, scarabic. I may have been a potential Mac switcher, but the iPod/iTunes thing is really killing my opinion of Apple.

I'll have my electronics without the image, thank you.

I like the earlier version that was disposable, because recycling is good for the planet.
Now I too want a cup of Swiss Miss. Actually, I just want a Swiss Miss. Hmmm.

Please, whatever you do in life, when it is all over and you're on your deathbed, don't be one of the fools who says, "Damn, I wish I had bought an iPod." You owe it to yourself and your family to go buy that iPod now. Go on.

Just stay away from the U2 model.

Wow. I can't tell if that was denying the antecedent, appeal to authority, or an ad hominem attack. Maybe all three plus poor usage of a comma? Sheesh.

Did anyone else hear the tears being choked out on that?

Hey puke and cry, don't take this so personally. You're not the first mefite to get caught up in the whole iPod, um, thing. Which is exactly the reason why many mefites are sick of iPods, sexy or not.

Anyway, it's just one bad post, we expect great things from you in the future.

Really.

Not until they throw in an 8-track adapter. There's Jethro Tull that needs listenin' to.

And that's where all this iPod cockassery burns me. My MP3 player *has* an 8-track adapter. It's called "line-in recording," and Apple is never going to give it to you.
posted by scarabic at 10:03 AM on December 14, 2004

Y'know on some levels an iPod actually sounds like it would be neat to have. But it's waaaay too expensive and every portable music device I've ever owned has broken or been lost with 6 weeks or so, and I'm not ready to take that risk with something cosying $400.

I listen to my single-track MP3 of Aqualung very often, lately. It's such a great record. I've also been listening to Aerosmith's Toys in the Attic occasionally, and, alas, it doesn't sound nearly as good as it did on the 8-track in mom's station wagon.
