Rock-star Matt Haughey is in the news again (with gratuitous photo). This time, in a New York Times article on the Amazon honor system (penned by Ironminds' Andy Wang).
Matt, were you about to chuck that notebook into the sea? Were you to hurl it at a passerby? I think the world wants to know.

I don't have any problem with anyone making money off their personal site, in fact, I'd like to see more and more people managing to do that, and yet somehow, when I read that quote, I hear myself thinking:

If you thought that picture was stupid, you should have seen the other poses the photographer asked me to do. Oy.
They wanted the picture to look "fun" so I had to run and skip and jump and lay down and do wacky poses, and while taking that photo they ran, the photographer asked me to turn my head and bite the laptop. That was one of the things I had to say no about. It was a fun experience though. It happened a while ago, and the interview was done before that. I'm glad Al got in there, I told Andy about the nosepilot situation because I'd been emailing Al, and I also told Andy about the baseball site, which I read at Rafe's site.

If it's any consolation, Rebecca, Andrew Sullivan appears to be wasting all of that money on atrocious, overpriced web design.
My compliments on the goofy photo, Matt. It looks like you were re-enacting the Statue of Liberty handoff with your laptop, which as we all know happens all the time in these go-go Internet times.

In a vague attempt to be serious, I do hope y'all are just giving Matt a hard time elbowing his ribs lovingly, and if media whoredom does actually occur, you'll be the first ones to find some way to make the rest of the world think he's even more popular than he is. Yeah I know. Wishful thinking. I'm a hopeless romantic idealist blah blah blah blah.
..but anything's possible.
I've been saying for years that we need several individuals to be the equivalent of celebrity status for personal website efforts. People like Matt. I like to believe there were times in the past when others had this opportunity, but when they saw it coming they ducked. I hope Matt won't duck. This is overdue, and some would argue it's too late.
I've heard reports recently about Terra Haute (sp?) Indiana. That they were disappointed that the public media came out in force when they were begrudgingly host to Tim McVeigh's execution. Public officials living in Terra Haute were espousing that their fine city never got attention any other time, and they didn't want to be remembered for this. They wanted to be remembered for the good things they provide their community, and the potential they could show to any company that wanted to invest in opening a plant or office there, and infuse the community with jobs and a better economy. Terra Haute Indiana is a fine city, but in some ways it's stuck in a timeloop. They were an industrial complex and a transport hub for materials back in the late 19th century, but it seems the rest of the world has passed them by. Then this execution crap happens. It was like putting salt into a wound. It's perhaps too late for Terra Haute.
Granted, I was hoping for online journalling to pull into the mainstream, but there were too many forces that were against it. They thought it was uncool. It was selling out. I gave up on that some years ago. I'd like to believe it's not too late for the personal content providers on the Internet, to show that they can provide enlightenment, entertainment, and perhaps someday even economic potential to advertisers and other interested parties. I'd like to think it's not too late for personal web design, community, or whatever you call it this week. I probably won't be in that number when it happens, but I'm rooting for the people who will be.
I'm not exactly sure what the catchword is this week regarding whatever it is people like Matt do for the Internet, but I for one don't think it's funny. It's serious, and time's running out. The future of the Internet's survival is not "dot com" from the perspective of stock trading companies. It's people like Matt. And if the opportunity ever comes, I hope we'll all go up to bat to help Matt, and people like him, grandslam out of the ballpark.

It's all gentle ribbing, ZachsMind. No worries. I don't think that many of us (if any of us!) need to come out and explicity say how much we appreciate Matt and what he's done for MeFi. Although, I suppose, a big love-in could be arranged.

I didn't take the "gentle ribbing" wrong. This reminds me of a night at a party. I was sitting with some friends and there was this cute blonde there. Somehow the conversation got to blonde jokes and she wanted to make a point to let everyone know she wasn't like most blondes. She wasn't stupid, y'know. So five minutes later one of the other guys made a snide sexual innuendo. I got it. Everyone else around the table got it. Went completely over this blonde girl's head, and just minutes before she was telling us she was in Mensa and all this shit. She looked embarrassed and stupid. So anyway, I didn't take the "gentle ribbing" wrong. I still don't get it. *shrug*
We wouldn't need a love-in for Matt. We'd need what I think they used to call in Hollywood a "coming out party" but I don't think they call it that anymore cuz of the homosexual connotations. The thing is there'd be this person who's gonna be the next Cary Grant or the next Audrey Hepburn, and this person's agent or "close personal friends" would set up this party and they'd invite all their network connections. Other agents or producers for shows or reporters or columnists for fashion and media magazines or just anyone in the field who had connections and clout, y'know. And they'd get this person all decked out and psyche him/her out to be THE next BIG thing and they'd basically try to butter this person up and make him/her look really good in front of the press and the big wigs. The objective would be to get this person options for auditions or just improve this person's own network connections so s/he would be able to make it big in the scene. I don't know if they do this anymore, but...
