Must we actively push the devolution? Is the shift button that hard to find? More inside.

What is the appropriate role of links in making FPP’s? A lot of people seem to think that MetaFilter is, essentially, about discussion. But Matt deletes “bad” links, even when they might generate good discussion. Why? If I want to discuss a topic, why can’t I just go and find any old link to start things off? Or can I?

It’s an old topic, but maybe we should adapt to our new users. And short of a definitive pronouncement from Matt, the only way to determine appropriate behavior around here is through community consensus. So: What say you all?

Annual repetition. This thread has begun a discussion on the MeFi acceptability of pages which change on an annual basis. Are annual repostings of this nature acceptable? [MI]

"...you get more reactions by being obscure." Newish Mefites: An FPP that leads to an interesting discussion is like catching a foul ball at a baseball game...it's a nice outcome, it will probably be one of the things you remember about the game, and you might even want to bring a glove to improve your odds, but it shouldn't be the main reason you come to the park.

How'd I do? This was my first FPP - too politicky, too religiousy, good stuff, bad stuff, indifferent? I like a good ego stroke as much as anyone, but I really want to know if I helped make MeFi a better place.

I am new. There is a lot of MetaTalk about politics.

Apparently, "The quickest way to get a label you'll never be able to shake here is to engage in political threads."

For a long time, I couldn't figure out why people freaked out so much about mentions of politics, but I've been reading this thread, and I'm almost three-quarters through, finally, and it looks like the consensus is: MetaFilter is not a soapbox, and your primary subject should be links, not opinions.

That's cool with me, I'm just curious if I've got it properly nailed down.

How not to respond in a thread. I don't like callouts, and I'm not calling anyone out. I was inspired by the good discussions in the green and I believe this thread highlights how Metafilter can be improved. In it so far, we have a throwaway irrelevant "I'm an atheist, this does not apply to me" comment, we have a non sequitur comment, an "I agree" without any backup, and a purely reaction provoking comment of whether God has a penis and can take dumps (I do understand the point being made). Basically, we can do better. I'm far from perfect and probably have a lot of throwaway comments to my name -- but could we all try a little harder to think before we comment?

The Final Nail. I haven't been reading as much lately---I'm am hoping that the election will be over soon so the excuses are gone for shitty posts. But, there it is.

A double post. It is a Newsfilter post, that isn't even news since it has been talked about for over a decade. It is clearly does not meet the stated standard. It is a classic troll: toss a turd that you *know* will incite much argument, for no apparent reason.. It is a single-link to a newspaper. It is a blatant amount of negative campaigning even while we try to encourage voting with a new link at the top of the page.

For the love of god, it is a self-Godwinizing post!

Matt posted the very next post, 30 minutes later, so there is no chance he didn't see the post.

Yet... it remains there on the blue.

It is the piece de resitance of the the shithole Matt has willingly allowed MeFi to become. I would say amazing if it wasn't so sad....

This thread has become Seth's Sandbox - I'm posting this MeTa thread in the hope of moving that stream of discussion to its appropriate locale.

I posted Hackworth's proposed Burning Man meetup coordinates at MonkeyFilter. It looks like we have the makings of a small MoFi/MeFi meetup (a first?). Time & place inside.

Cue the disparaging remarks about BM and MoFi (or - imagine this - just keep them to yourself!)

This post is nothing more than a mini op-ed piece about the top news story (at the time) that takes up too much real estate on the home page and has been discussed to death already. IMO, if your FPP has one link and needs a "more inside...", you need to rethink it's place here.

Hey this is what the guys over here at this partisan extremist forum think. What do you guys think? Let's chat.

For future reference, does this mean the ban is lifted on LGF links? Are we going so far down the road that DU forums are now acceptable linkworthy posts? Does Matt anyone care anymore?
