Is there some sort of informal way that we can self-organize into a network of volunteers that can provide local assistance to AskMefites in need? Or maybe have the option for location information on AskMe questions so that we could receive alerts to local questions
a la IRL? Or something? (Apologies in advance -- this is long, half-baked, inarticulate & rambly.)

October 8-12 is OCD Awareness Week. I think this is as good a time as any to talk about an issue that MetaFilter doesn't handle very well.

So, who is a Mefite and also a subscriber (or developer) over at App.net?
I am here (as you can tell) and there, and go by Faintdreams at both locations.
I was just wondering who else might also fit into the thin slice of technical Venn?
A refactoring of the subscription system and the release of Netbot (an Alpha mobile client from the makers of Tapbot), has caused a mini surge in activity over at App.net.
If you too are over there, feel free to find me and say 'ello'.

Bearing in mind how
this AskMeFi query turned out
in the end, is there a word, saying, acronym or something that means "A win for the MetaFilter community"? If not, could or should there be one?

Jessamyn:
[Folks we're sort of done with the "what crayz thinks about this post" angle. Please email crayz directly if you want more of crayz's opinions, otherwise this is getting to the "Take it to MeTa" point. Put another way, everyone who continues to hyperrespond is also part of the problem here, please consider that.]
So, okay. Let's take it to Meta. As a community, we keep having the same conversation about sexual harassment, unwanted sexual advances and other related issues. Sometimes, with
positive results. Sometimes,
not. Personal attacks fly back and forth, fueling anger and frustration. Why are so many of us talking past each other? Is there no possibility of finding common ground, or gaining further understanding and empathy from such incidents?

Does Metafilter have a Fitbit community?
I got a
Fitbit* for myself for Christmas, and of all the web-based health and fitness trackers, I like this one the best. I'd love to talk with other MeFi Fitbitters for encouragement, tips, venting. etc.

Mefite[1]
Anil Dash[2]
writes[3]:
"Simply learning from disciplines like urban planning, zoning regulations, crowd control, effective and humane policing, and the simple practices it takes to stage an effective public event, we can come up with a set of principles to prevent the overwhelming majority of the worst behaviors on the Internet." Examples? Why
Metafilter, of course, (as well as Stack Exchange sites, of which he is a board member).

DisasterFilter Pony: This spring has seen some horrific devastation around the world. Is there any way, using our profile locs or something where we could compile a list of mefites near disasters so we could make sure they're ok, or see what help we can get to someone who is already on the ground where it's happening?

Maxine Hong Kingston grew up in two worlds: the "solid America," of confounding white "ghosts" to which her parents emigrated, and the misogynistic China of her mother's mesmerizing "talk-stories," where girls were worthless, tradition was exalted and only a strong, wily warrior woman could scratch her way upward. The next meeting of the
Mefi Book Club will be held in
MetaChat on Tuesday, April 26th. We'll be discussing Ms. Kingston's powerful, controversial and award-winning memoir,
The Woman Warrior, and her attempts to discern the truths behind those talk-stories while discovering her personal identity. Please check out the
Hungerford lecture on the book (or watch the
video), and join us!

So why do you participate here on MetaFilter? Is it because
you "have a serious and unhealthy addiction to the internet, perhaps due to issues of procrastination and life avoidance, and ... metafilter is like a group of enablers in encouraging that kind of psychodynamic?" Or, perchance, do you visit frequently for some other reason(s)?

Facebook has an open position for a
Questions Community Manager. The text itself is pretty fascinating with superlatives like"anything you can dream up", "thousands of moderators" and "the full resources of Facebook at your disposal". I obviously thought about AskMe and Jessamyn, and she agreed it was an interesting Meta post.
Knowing that communities start from the ground up, I am especially interested in thoughts about how such a gigantic operation can be handled, if it can at all.

What are the sources in the MetaFilter community network where if its not an FPP, doesn't fit into any other category and I don't really feel like framing it as an AskMe, can I vent, chat with friends&Mefites, and deal with something on my mind, in general?

Hi MeFites! This is the discussion thread for the
MetaFilter Poll, appearing on the front page of MetaFilter, available for 5 days to logged-in site users. If you would like to take the poll, I would ask that you please do so BEFORE you read or participate in the discussion here. This is to help ensure that your responses to the poll questions are entirely your own decisions and are not influenced by the opinions of those participating in this thread. If you have already taken the poll or are not interested in taking the poll but would like to discuss it, please do so here.

Thank you to all those who have sent kind words to us - they really do help us stay tough. And thanks as a whole to the MeFi community, which has kept me entertained, interested and mentally functioning the past weeks as I lurked, learning new things and following the drama.
