So I posted a double of the awesome wedding dance, and now I have a pony request that might be useful. [more inside]

Why is this AskMe question, which is clearly a double, still around?

I would like to know what people's thoughts are on the idea of allowing Metafilter posters to make a "second edition" of a post after a certain amount of time has passed (a week?, a year?). [more inside]

This post was deleted for the following reason: I freakin' hate it when I go to delete a double and some has already snagged like the perfect deletion reason. It's like, hey, thanks, DAD. -- cortex (more inside) [more inside]

I'm an avid reader of Puke & Cry's Deleted Thread blog, and it got me wondering: Do any of the admins have stats on the most posts deleted in one day? Or, the most doubles (i.e. the most posts on one topic that were deleted - I'm guessing it must be an obituary post, maybe James Brown)? Or, the longest time span without a deletion? Etc.

Yes it is a double, but it is also good example of how one or two cranky farts can totally change the tone of a thread. [more inside]

What happened to the thread of photos off the p2p networks? Did that link get removed for any particular reason? Was it to make room for the Zelda/Golden Ratio thread? Hmm. I am kind of disappointed.

So, if this is election minutiae, is this? And can we assume that a ElectionFilter FPP formulated like this is OK?

Deja vu.

Okay, so e.g.,this project also appears on the main site. But on the projects page there's still a [post this to mefi] link.

It would be really great if the site could recognize when a post is made with the same URL as a projects project, and associate the two, so that a) the main post is linked to from the projects page, and b) [post this to mefi] does not appear anymore. The main site post could be marked up too ("by our own whoozitswhat").

Isn't this a double post?

As carter points out, this post appears to be a link to a site which, ahem, repurposes this photographer's images in order to sell porn ads.

Admins, might it be appropriate to edit the post to link to the proper site rather than reward what appears to be an unauthorized misuse of somone else's material?
posted by George_Spiggott on May 19, 2006 - 15 comments

previously on mefl here, but the content is old and that link dead so I thought it was worth another post.

As meehawl points out, we've discussed Aphex Twin infinitely. If an old link breaks, is it best to send a message to jessahowie to update it, rather than dredging it back up on the front page?

This post was deleted for the following reason: actually, no matter how much the site rocks, double posts after only a year really aren't okay.

Just wonderin'... Why isn't this a double post since it directly references the previous instance?

In response to the inordinate number of doubles recently (e.g.) which begin:
MeFite A: Look! This is my link!
MeFite B: This is nice
MeFite A: sorry, double, delete

Downright rude.
Why was my thread on 03/12/05 on George Best's funeral deleted? If you're deleting threads then explain to the poster. I know Meta is primarily US-based but you have no idea who George Best represented. I'm really livid.

I was cool having my thread deleted, because it was a double...but it seemed like more people had commented in that one - and now those comments are lost. Can they be moved?

Better still, would it not be wiser to have read in the post that people wanted to keep open, and followed those wishes?

So is there any kind of time factor dispensation for double posts?
I was emailed a link today that made me piss myself laughing, which I really feel the need for these days. I came here to post it but found it was already on the front page four years ago.

Why is it that when I double posted an item on The World in January everyone pissed in my cornflakes, repeatedly, but with this triple post fenriq gets a pass?
posted by togdon on Apr 4, 2005 - 79 comments

Just a general question, not a call out per se.
Are annual events ok to post to each time they occur?
Question prompted by the latest 50 loathsome New Yorkers thread. I flagged and mentioned it in the thread as being a double from last year, then Arch Stanton mentioned it was run here in 2003 as well.
Does this mean I can repost Geek Prom, because, you know, its next year already. (don't worry it will not be a FPP, just making a point)

Polling the membership to see what they think about a big-media story is not a good post, especially when there are no good links offered in the post, and the subject matter is hot-button, right-to-life kind of stuff. Besides: double-post.
posted by scarabic on Mar 18, 2005 - 74 comments

Is a triple post okay if you knew it was one? (The person who posted this must have known, since the search included in the post shows it.) Is it okay if there are a few more links included this time, and the text is on a different site now? Finally, is it okay if the goal is simply to elicit more discussion on the topic, as it seems to be here?
posted by koeselitz on Feb 9, 2005 - 17 comments

Two things:

1) When is turning a comment into a FPP okay? The poster acknowledges it as such in the FPP itself and the old thread is still open for new comments. Shouldn't the new links be added to the old thread?

2) Also, pepsi blue.

Double post.
posted by Captaintripps on Jan 24, 2005 - 4 comments

I am struck by the amount of clutter which is created by apparently self appointed sanctimonious MeFi gods/censors. Comments on etiquette, self promotion etc are constructive, however what on earth (other than self promotion) is achieved by pointing out that you have seen something before or that it doesn't interest you. So what? I would have no interest whatsoever in a post linking to a 1973 article about bestiality amongst jazz lovers but that is just me and I am not small minded enough to pontificate against those who want to follow this particular hobby. The one thing I can conceive of that would be more tedious than reading the article would be wading through "old link - I've seen it before" or "this is boring". This is hypocrisy gone mad.
Anyone else?

Hey Matt, why was my post about Gunther deleted, or would anyone else care to field that question for me?

double post, double post...you missed something from 2001 I would hereby like to call a moretoreum on "double post" callouts in threads when the original link was more than, lets say, 18 months ago. Not everyone has been a member since the beginning, most people don't have the time to go back and read multiple years of archives, nor is it reasonable to expect that they would. The search is wonky, we all know that. [more inside]

There seem to be a lot of double posts lately and more interestingly many aren't getting deleted. Has the policy changed, or is it just arbitrary?

This is a double-post. Presumably the author wasn't told because he used "http://idea-a-day.com" while the first post used "http://www.idea-a-day.com". Perhaps a little bit of code could be implemented to solve this problem?

This dangling baby . . . it vibrates? Every time Matt kills a "Jacko's dangling baby" post, another pops up to replace it. We've talked about this before, but I think the (general) question needs to be raised: What, if anything, can be done to prevent reposting deleted stories? It's been pointed out that posters may not know that they're posting something that has been deleted before because, um, it's been deleted before! (And with wacky news like this, there can be any number of sources for the same story, sorry.) Short of deleting the story every time it pops up, is there a better solution?

noticed a link I posted yesterday was removed? why? It would be nice for any moderator or higher up to e mail someone telling why the link was removed
posted by hoopyfrood on Sep 18, 2002 - 23 comments

I noticed this thread (lofi link--in case it doesn't last) earlier and noticed that the poster, BarneyFifesBullet, mentioned that he'd searched for the topic and hadn't found it. A cursory search, however, turned up that it had, in fact, been posted a few months earlier. Long story short, I noticed that the default setting when you use the search function on MeFi sets the drop-down menu to "in the past month" which seems like it could be the culprit in a case like this where the poster seems to have searched unsuccessfully for a previously-posted link. It doesn't seem like something that would be frightfully hard to chance, and it might save us a few double posts...
