Not a deletion whine, just thoughts on previously-posted checking

This is NOT a complaint about deletion (hence, no link back to the deleted post)... What it IS, is a few thoughts on the previous-link-checker. Neither of the links in the toilet paper origami were previously used, so the link checker didn't blip on them. However, one of the links in the previous postings did auto-forward to one of the links in the recent post. I know that's a cast iron bitch of a problem to solve, so maybe there should be some level of content search for these? I don't know of any other way this should/could be improved. However, I wholly acknowledge I could have searched better...even for the artist's name would have prevented me from making a double post. So, yeah, you know...stuff.

Posting pony petition

So I posted a double of the awesome wedding dance, and now I have a pony request that might be useful. I know, I know, it's still on the front page, which I discovered after the fact...I haven't been on the site much lately and was in a bit of a rush. My searches didn't result in any hits, nor did the preview feature find my link. Herein lies the problem. I was referred to the youtube video from another site, and that site added some referrer info to the url which I didn't notice until after everyone cried "double." I am far less than web-savvy, but would it be possible to add something to the mefi search that could lop off the "&eurl" code, and check that url against what's been posted? Everything before the code is identical to the original post's link, and presumably would've resulted in the posting page telling me that I'm blind and doubleposting.

I would like to know what people's thoughts are on the idea of allowing Metafilter posters to make a "second edition" of a post after a certain amount of time has passed (a week?, a year?). I think that the new version of the post would not merit appearing on the front page - but perhaps it could be made accessible via a sidebar in the manner of "resolved" askme questions. The new version would be linked from the original post (and vice versa). New posts could attract their own comments; perhaps a new version would cause comments to be closed on the original version. The sorts of scenario I have in mind are: 1. There have been developments since the original post: for example there might have been a thread about an upcoming movie - now it is released. 2. Somebody commented on the original post with a far better link: sufficient to merit a re-writing of the post. 3. The URLs given in the original post have atrophied - new ones are required. - Sorry if this has been asked before - my search was unable to bring up anything however.

I'm an avid reader of Puke & Cry's Deleted Thread blog, and it got me wondering: Do any of the admins have stats on the most posts deleted in one day? Or, the most doubles (i.e. the most posts on one topic that were deleted - I'm guessing it must be an obituary post, maybe James Brown)? Or, the longest time span without a deletion? Etc.

Yes it is a double, but it is also good example of how one or two cranky farts can totally change the tone of a thread. Sometimes it feels like MeFi (hell, the whole damn internet) is just a bunch of bitter dour naysayers, but it's amazing how it only takes one or two cranks to really change a conversation's tone. I just thought this was a particularly egregoius example. Maybe next time you feel like spouting off about how horrible something is it is worth thinking if it's really worth the hate?

Okay, so e.g.,this project also appears on the main site. But on the projects page there's still a [post this to mefi] link.

It would be really great if the site could recognize when a post is made with the same URL as a projects project, and associate the two, so that a) the main post is linked to from the projects page, and b) [post this to mefi] does not appear anymore. The main site post could be marked up too ("by our own whoozitswhat").

As carter points out, this post appears to be a link to a site which, ahem, repurposes this photographer's images in order to sell porn ads.

Admins, might it be appropriate to edit the post to link to the proper site rather than reward what appears to be an unauthorized misuse of somone else's material?

Link tweaking: is a redux to supplant dead links justified, or should the links just be tweaked?

As meehawl points out, we've discussed Aphex Twin infinitely. If an old link breaks, is it best to send a message to jessahowie to update it, rather than dredging it back up on the front page?

Downright rude.
Why was my thread on 03/12/05 on George Best's funeral deleted? If you're deleting threads then explain to the poster. I know Meta is primarily US-based but you have no idea who George Best represented. I'm really livid.

I was cool having my thread deleted, because it was a double...but it seemed like more people had commented in that one - and now those comments are lost. Can they be moved?

Better still, would it not be wiser to have read in the post that people wanted to keep open, and followed those wishes?
