MetaMedia

Life can be difficult, time are tough; it is very easy to feel overwhelmed. That being said, I'm curious about what you are reading, watching, listening, and playing to get through these turbulent times. I'm also interested in knowing if your consumption of media has changed over the last couple of months. Are you seeking out things that are light and easy to consume? Or maybe you seek comfort in something heavier and darker. Or maybe you've withdrawn from screens altogether and are finding pleasure in a more analog and tactile space. Share with the community if you feel up to it. As always, be kind to yourself and to others. Cheers.

🏝️ MetaDesertIslandPicks πŸ“Ί

We're close to the end of the week, let's talk about something other than politics. Let's talk about your desert island picks. Choose one film, one book, one television series, one album, and one video-game/console to take with you while stranded on a desert island*. What are your choices? Assume the media you choose will never degrade and that you have a high definition television and a consistent source of power. As always, be kind to yourself and to others. β € β € *No trilogies.

πŸ§›πŸ¦‡ MetaSpookyFilms πŸ‘»πŸŽƒ

End of another week, let's talk about scary films. We're just a few 'spooky' weeks away from All Hallows' Eve. What are your favorite scary films? Do you have certain movies that you watch every year as a tradition? Have you discovered something new recently? Are you more into classic movie monsters like The Mummy, Dracula, Frankenstein? Or maybe you're into more modern franchises such as Paranormal, The Purge, Conjuring? Are you on Team Freddy or Team Jason? I'd also love to hear some horror reccomendations from other (non-western) countries around the world, films from Asia and Africa that aren't frequently a part of this conversation. As always, be kind to yourself and to others. Boo!

Do Re Mi Fa Sol La Ti 🎡

End of another week, let's talk about something else that is not related to politics. I want to hear about your favorite musical(s). Broadway, Off-Broadway, live-action adaptation, film adaptations of stage musicals, etc. Who are your favorite singers/performers/entertainers? Do you have any specific songs that you like to put on repeat? Have you memorized the soundtrack? Do you sing them in your car or shower? Let's talk about a few of our favorite things. As always, be kind to yourself and to others.

MetaLikeTheBackofMyHand

End of another week, let's talk about something else that is not related to politics. I want to hear about some "thing" that you've experienced over and over and over again. Maybe it's a book you keep re-reading, or a movie you've seen 100+ times, or a video game you play constantly, or an album or song you have on repeat. What piece of media are you constantly re-enaging with? Some thing that feels like the back of your hand, that you are familiar and comfortable with, that you know all the way through. Some thing you keep on coming back to because you just love it so much. As always, be kind to yourself and others. Cheers.

Looking back on ten years of FPPs

I've joined many web communities in my life, but none for as long or as wholeheartedly as MetaFilter. I've learned a lot, grown as a person, and taken direction from the thousands of smart, funny, and caring people who write here. And I've been inspired to write, too, putting more time and effort into researching worthwhile posts than I have at any other creative hobby. Sadly, what with work and the news chaos and competing interests it feels like there's less and less time to focus lately, and seeing linkrot erode what I do post is a drag. So when showbiz_liz's lovely celebration of ten years on the blue made me realize my own 10th Mefiversary was approaching, I was moved to do something about it. Nothing on the web lasts forever, but armed with old notes files, the Wayback Machine, and a drive to rediscover my own personal Best of the Web, I plowed through all 149 posts (and a few comments) to recover lost links, check on what had happened since, and organize it all into a single FPP omnibus for your reading pleasure. Is this a problem with FanFare?

Perhaps this is confirmation bias, but it seems to me that many FanFare threads have descended into β€œthis show or movie is bad, and you are a bad person for watching it.” This, despite that fact that the people making these statements are clearly (hate?) watching the show or film. [more inside]

"The Big Lebowskemoji" from the mind of mathowie

I got a kick out of this and thought it deserved a MetaTalk post: The Big Lebowskemoji, from MetaFilter's own mathowie.

Jandek on Mefi

Just thought it worth mentioning that one of the guys behind the new Pruitt-Igoe doc linked on the front page is a MeFite who showed up in the thread last night to thank MeFi (or Memepool) for turning him on to the subject of his first film, Jandek on Corwood, back in 2002.

Help me find the crazy mad max bicycle man. I think they were naked?

There was an old post on the blue maybe a year or more ago that linked to a music video that featured an old man riding an overloaded, crazy bicycle to some sort of bizzarro world encampment in the woods. I think everyone was naked or shirtless. Someone took the music out and added foley, and it became a surreal masterpiece of a short film. I can't find it now and it's driving me crazy. Anyone remember it?

Bocomo, we'll get there fast and then we'll take it slow...

Any mefites coming to Columbia, MO for the True/False film festival?
I'm probably not going to any events (I'll be working a lot, natch), but I live here and would love to have a meetup.

The law for my enemies

The latest installment in the saga of our Borat correspondent:

"One of the plaintiffs was forced to resign from his prominent position at the University of South Carolina chapter of Chi Psi. Along with barring the DVD release, the plaintiffs were seeking unspecified monetary damages."

Please don't post spoilers.

PLEASE don't be a spoilsport! I can't understand why people gleefully post spoilers. In the thread linked below (read it if you want some movies spoiled), one poster proclaimed "15 years is well past the spoiler expiration date." Maybe this is a joke (i.e. Milk Carton expiration date), but if not I totally disagree. A young person might see an old movie for the first time. He deserves to see it unspoiled. [link] [more inside]

A single link to Amazon's front page? Really?

Yes, we all await the new Hitchhiker's Guide movie with equal parts fear and excitement. But an FPP linking to Amazon's home page to show the trailer for a new movie is bad form.

MeFi Film Fest?

If one were to put together a Metafilter film festival, including undistributed short films that have been linked on the blue, which films would make the cut? Off the top of my head I can think of both A Shoggoth on the Roof and 80s Ending. Any others?
