Election season idea: could a small box get added to the sidebar highlighting the open politics threads, below The Deck ad and above the sidebar? An opt-out (or opt-in option) could also be available.
[more inside]

I think using multiple paragraphs on the front page clutters it up and makes it more difficult to instantly identify the end of one post and the beginning of another.
For example. This is why [more inside] exists, no?

Is it just me, or has the Blue been replaced by a default apache loading page?

Am I the only one who sees "Connection Timeout" in the place where the number of members should be listed on the front page of MeFi?

I'm hoping this is a tiny pony request. Size of the cuddlier guide horses, p'raps. It is this: a [+] tag on the dateline of mefi front page posts. Clicking the [+] would add a link to one's Favourites tab.

PonyFilter:
CDC Recommends... what?
It is obvious when you open the post because the headline is shown, but in the front page, it is just confusing... Can the headline be included on the front page, or can there be a note in the posting page that the headline is not shown on the FP, and shouldn't be used as part of the post summary

Music: Feature or Bug? When I try streaming a song from the front page, as soon as I scroll past it or flip to a different browser tab, it stops playing. If I load the song's individual page and stream it from there, it contines to play until I close it (even as I type this MeTa post in another tab, for example).

A little bug on the front page. Top right reads "Connection Timeout members | You are logged in as ..." or merely "Connection Timeout members" if I'm not logged in.

MeFi posts show incorrect number of "new comments" on main page next to the number of comments link to the discussion itself.

Given that Ask Metafilter had 40 questions posted yesterday (more than the number of posts to Metafilter proper, in fact), would it be possible to see more than 25 questions on the front page at a time? It seems kind of silly to have to go to the archives for questions posted earlier during the same day. Adjunct question: how's the server holding up under the onslaught of posts?

Wow, at least 35 posts on Jan 16th. Is this a record breaker? I haven't seen the front page so active since around September.

So if TextAds were so successful, what do people think about pushing the TextAds beyond the home page to the top of the main MeFi links of the day? That would allow for a lot more impressions, maybe at a slightly cheaper rate than the homepage ad rate?
I've enjoyed following the links from the TextAds more often than not, so I'm all for more, as long as they stay relatively high quality (I suppose Matt's the ultimate arbiter in this case.)

can anyone else not log in? i'm getting the "This main page is currently being rendered as a static page . . . if you're logged in, you'll be able to comment" message on the front page. so i log in, and it takes me to "Thanks for logging in, you're now ready to jump directly to the index page," which i do, but it still says i'm not logged in. i've tried refreshing, but that doesn't work, either. any advice?

That new "powered-by" bar is c00l! but it overlaps with the sideblog (on pages that are shorter than the sideblog).

Another teeny-weeny gltich with the sort feature. I had mine set for "most comments". When I went to look at a page and came back, it was still set to most comments although the dropdown menu now says date (my previous setting). This persists through refreshes.
Either "most comments" is sticky and it's not supposed to be (i.e., the menu is right but the URL is wrong), or the dropdown is reverting to the previous setting spontaneously.
As I say, the teeny-weeniest of buglets. (Oh, IE5/MacOS 9.0.4)

I think I fixed the sessioning. I reworked a lot of code tonight, and tested it, and I think I got it working correctly. Here's what's going on: you come to metafilter for the first time today, it says 3 new links and 24 new comments. You read the site, hitting the index page as many times as you want, and you'll never lose that 3 links and 24 comments status.
then you go away for a few hours, and you come back. it should say "1 new link and 13 new comments" (if that much changed between visits), and it should remain that way until you go away for over 15 minutes.
Now, the only place where this will be screwed up, is when you hit the site within 15 minutes from your last visit. That way, the session won't die and it won't update your last visit time.
I also got rid of the new window thing, and the double arrow things, since you won't lose state if you jump directly into a thread.
Let me know if you find any problems.

Anyone else getting a ColdFusion error when they try to view the front page in Netscape? It works fine for me with IE, but not Netscape. Could the applet be causing this?
Error message:
An error occurred while evaluating the expression:
#newlinks.recordcount# IS "0"
Error near line 320, column 29.

This is a speed question. I can go from MF's homepage to it's underlying pages without any delay. Click, and I'm there. However, going back to the homepage is always difficult, and takes at least two times longer. Is there some kind of 'no cache' thing working on it?
